This coming fall, Tyler is going to receive some very distinguished guests. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, odds are you already know all about cable’s biggest phenom Duck Dynasty. The Robertson family has made a career, or rather a few of them, by combining ill-advised antics, with a surprisingly cogent religious message. The first family of the hunting and fishing world has always been open about its faith. As members of the Church of Christ denomination, Willie (the family scion), and matriarch “Miss Kay” are making an appearance as part of a fund raiser for East Texas Christian Academy. Given that they share a denominational affiliation with the school, they were a logical choice for the school’s funds drive. The event will be held at the Oil Palace, on Sunday, September 15th, and will start at 3:00 that afternoon. For tickets, go to www.oilpalace.com, or contact the venue by phone at 903-566-2122.
As interested as I am in the Duck Dynasty appearance, I’m even more excited by the prospect of an appearance by Jerry Seinfeld at the Cowan Center on the campus of UT Tyler. Mr. Seinfeld is the probably biggest name in comedy today, nearly fifteen years or so after his television show ended. He has largely avoided major media attention while doing small projects like his increasingly successful internet program entitled “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Jerry’s appearance is scheduled for Thursday, October 24th, at 7:00 pm at the Cowan Center. Tickets are already on sale for season members, but they go on sale to the general public on the 19th of August.
Charles Krauthammer is a columnist, Fox News contributor, and one of the smartest social and political commentators in the business. Dr. Krauthammer is a renowned psychiatrist, and Pulitzer Prize winning writer, who has served on presidents’ committees, and written speeches for political leaders. He also happens to be one of my favorite editorial writers. He is scheduled to appear at the Cowan Center on Tuesday, February 4th, 2014; at 7:30 pm.Members can purchase tickets on August 5. Tickets go on sale to the public on November 25. For ticket information go to, http://www.cowancenter.org/lectureseries.html or call the box office at 903-566-7424.
