Downtown Tyler Square, What Does it Offer?

December 7th, 2010
Downtown Tyler Texas

Tyler Texas Square

The downtown Tyler Texas square used to offer Jack King Jr. screaming “downtown Tyler” but he is no longer there and people would prefer to impersonate him now rather then hear him do that anymore.

But beyond Jack King Jr.’s TV commercial memorable pitch downtown Tyler has quite a bit more to offer. When I go downtown I usually am stopping at Don Juan’s Mexican Restaurant or I am taking my wife on a fancy date to Jake’s.

When going into Jake’s be sure to let the hostess know you want to go sit up on the roof top. If the weather is good the roof top offers the best experience while eating here. The food at Jake’s is very good and they have a finer dinner menu selection to choose from compared to Chili’s or even Outback.

Jake’s offers an experience of local Tyler Texas dining in one of the many old buildings that still have survived the square.

Just about one year ago a few of these old buildings were destroyed in a fire. In fact a remodeled store converted to a coffee shop/ music venue was taken out as well as a law firm and architecture business. This area is now being turned into a park thanks to the generosity of Brookshire’s grocery store company.

When in downtown during Christmas be sure to stretch your legs by walking in the square. The city of Tyler lights up the square with Christmas lights although any sign of a cross, nativity scene and so on is unfortunately missing. Times do change and political correctness is what you will see now during Christmas. The square is still very pretty and enjoyable and worth a stroll around.

The square also offers Tyler Citizens a fun place for kids as the Discovery Science Place is in walking distance. This place provides something along the lines of a interactive science center for kids in the age range of 2 – 9 and will easily take up a good 3 hours if you decide to experience everything there they have to offer.

You can also find the very large First Place building at the Tyler Square. The First Place building houses Regions Bank and offers the best commercial real estate offices in town. Many businesses would not accept anything less than the premier facilities you get in this building.

If you are looking for commercial real estate in Tyler I definitely recommend riding the elevators and checking out the offices in this building first hand. Both the view, looks, and spaciousness in these commercial offices can’t be found anywhere else in Tyler.

Finally consider that the Tyler downtown square has several unique antique shops as well as a few very old traditional churches. You can find Marvin United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and Christ Episcopal Church all in downtown Tyler and very close to the square.

Kilgore’s Oil Museum

Kilgore Oil Museum

Kilgore Oil Museum

The Oil Museum in Kilgore Texas is a reminder of how East Texas became known and how the people of East Texas were able to endure The Great Depression by the discovery of “black gold”. The museum recreates the way people lived during the discovery of the largest discovery of oil in the United States. The museum is located on the campus of Kilgore College.

As you walk into the museum you are lead into the first doom shaped room that portrays some history of the oil fields. The Oil Museum brings you back in time by showing you some treasures from the 1930’s. The museum has a display of old furniture, 1930 cars, antique jewelry, and old radios. As you walk into the final room you are sent back into time as you walk through an old town. Walk through old restaurants, grocery stores, jails, and post offices. They display how the roads were affected by the oil boom, with cars, people, and animals sinking in the black mud. Not very much has changed through all the years that I have visited the museum. They have a small theater that shows the same short movie that was played when I was young. The movie shows the life styles of the people and the changes that happened after the founding of the oil in Kilgore and even has some real footage. Your little children will love the fun “elevator” ride. Take a trip under ground through the different levels of earth and rock. Fun puppets will put on a show to educate children of the different levels of rocks, and how people get oil out of the ground. As you are leaving you can visit the gift shop to get a shirt, candy, or a small gift to remember the fun time you had at the museum.

People travel to visit the Oil Museum. It is a fun place to bring your family and learn an important history of Kilgore, Texas. Although the museum has not changed very much, it does not really need to change. It is a great place to bring an elementary class. The Oil Museum is very fun and educational.

Burger House

Burger House Tyler Texas

Burger House Tyler Texas

Burger House has brought a great pride to East Texas. The fun “every one knows your name” atmosphere makes your experience of eating at Burger House more enjoyable. Between the giant chalk board and the few video games, my kids have fun when they eat here. The restaurant has a great monument painted on the walls resembling all the greatest treasures in Tyler.

Besides the paintings on the walls and the small video games, Burger House offers great food. They have a great selection of burgers that are made just to your liking. Before eating there I really had not heard very many reports about Burger House. I think that the new burger restaurant Smash Burger has over shadowed Burger House. Burger House has other food than just burgers; they also have chicken sandwiches and hotdogs. The restaurant has chili cheese fries, if you can get over the guilt of the 10 pounds you are putting on from the deep fried potatoes, thick chili, and melted cheese, you will realize how great the food is here.

Not only is the food comparable to the popular Smash Burger, the prices are comparable to. You can eat somewhat cheap here and the servings are large enough to share. They have perfect portions for your small children. Your children can choose their favorite meal from the selections of burger, corn dog, or hotdog. Burger House has two rooms with televisions; usually play the popular sports game or Fox News. Burger house is a fun place to hang out and the food is pretty great too!

Jalapeno Tree Mexican Restaurant

February 10th, 2010

Jalapeno Tree Mexican Restaurant is located at 420 Loop 323, Tyler, Texas 75701. Inside is fairly large space and nicely decorated. Their booths are pretty large. They could easily fit six normal size people, or maybe 8 small people.

Before your meal, chips and two different kinds of salsa are served. A red and guacamole. Kinda spicy so be aware in case you are not a fan of hot stuff! I can not tolerate hot stuff.

Next to us there was a large party for a girl who I think was turning 21 years old. The only reason I am saying this is because through out the night people kept buying her shots of drinks. I remember thinking I never had so many people show up at my birthday. So they are able to manage a large party.

I went there lately and ordered an ala carte beef taco with a side of Charo beans with tortilla soup. To my surprise it was very filling. My brother and my sister in law shared fajitas. The place is great and a fun place to go and enjoy a meal with your family. Food is good, usually the company is even better. The service was also very good.

Here are some examples of food you can find in their menus: Salad and soup, Quesadillas, Fajitas, Grilled Specialty, Star dinners, Mexican favorites, burritos, lunch specials, American food, children’s menu. If all this is not making you hungry I don’t know what will. They also serve a complimentary ice cream with your meal at no charge.

I would suggest the next time you find yourself hungry and around the loop, stop by the Jalapeno Tree and eat. While you are there you can ask them about their Pepper Posse reading and eating for free there. I am sure if you ask anyone who works there, they will be able to tell you more about this. You can also find this information on the back of their gift cards.

Good Place To Find Quality Children’s Clothes

Aren’t Kid’s Cute is a fun place to visit for re-sale kids clothes, toys and baby items located in Lindale just a short distance from Tyler Texas. The shop itself has a cute antiquey atmosphere with lots of little rooms packed with clothes and toys. The items for sale on the other hand, are anything but antique – they only sell items in the best condition and from reliable brands.

Aren’t Kids Cute is a thriving business because the things for sale are in nearly new condition and the prices are attractive. As a customer – you get a really good deal. For the consigner – you get 50% of the price sold and everything is done for you – the presentation and pricing, marketing, selling etc.

It is fun to go and browse at Aren’t Kids Cute – for kids and parents alike. Shoes and boots are a particularly good find, and sports and ballet shoes are always in stock which is great when your kid’s feet start growing in the middle of the soccer season! It’s also a good place to find Halloween outfits, swimsuits and seasonal clothes. There are maternity items and baby equipment too -even large items like strollers, cribs and high chairs.

I love this store. It allows me to buy from Gap and Ralph Loren and to indulge in buying novelty Tshirts and things that aren’t necessarily practical but that my children will love. My 7 year old likes coming with me because he loves that he can afford to buy toys and DVDs with his own small allowance. Oh and I forgot to mention, there is a basket of play things to occupy your kids while you shop in peace.
