FS1, what’s the verdict?

September 30th, 2013

Now that Fox Sports 1 has been out for over a month, what are your thoughts of the new network?

I love the idea of another 24-hour sports network to give ESPN some serious competition but I’m not crazy about what I’ve seen so far. FS1’s way of competing with Sports Center is a show called Fox Sports Live where they show stats, highlights and in depth interviews but in my opinion, the anchors try too hard to be entertaining and funny instead of simply letting the sports themselves do the entertaining.

I’ve recorded Regis Philbin’s show, Crowd Goes Wild a few times but I’m still not sure what to think about it. Regis is entertaining but I’m not crazy about his panel which includes a female British sports broadcaster, a comedian, a former NFL player and a young attractive woman who they try to make funny but in reality, she’s there for eye candy.

A lot of people like watch MMA but I’m not one of them, hence, I’m not crazy about FS1 airing that but if it brings in the ratings, you can’t argue with the results so more power to them.

Chances are, the network i still ironing out its kinks and once every those kinks do get ironed out, the World Wide Leader may have that serious competition.

Captain Phillips

cap

It’s been a while since Tom Hanks has put out a great movie but hopefully the release of Captain Richards be his next one.

Hanks stars in the film based on a true story as he portrays a man by the name of Captain Richard Phillips. Somali pirates hijacked the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, making it the first cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. The movie emphasizes the relationship between Phillips and Samoli pirate captain, Muse who takes hostage.

The movie is directed by Paul Green Grass who also directed several other movies including the Green Zone, United 93 and The Bourne Ultimatum amongst several others.

So far, the movie has received several positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cole Smithey writes, “The grueling 2009 kidnapping ordeal suffered by U.S. cargo-ship captain Richard Phillips comes to tangible life in Paul Greengrass’s nonstop nail-biter. Nerves will be rattled.”

Rodrigo Perez says, “The white-knuckled immediacy Greengrass delivers to every scene is transportive, dropping you like a passenger, gagged and bound, into this extremely volatile situation. The fear, panic and emotional pain every character endures is utterly tangible.”

The film is set to be released into theaters around the country starting Friday, Oct. 11.

Former Longhorn, East Texas native James Street dies

September 30th, 2013

It was a sad day for Longhorns fans and East Texans alike as former Texas Longhorn quarterback James Street died at the age of 65. Street was a Longview native. He went into the 1968 as a backup quarterback for the Longhorns but it only took two games for him to become the starter. He led the team to 20 straight wins including a 15-14 victory over No. 2 Arkansas to win the regular season. That game was dubbed, “Game of the Century.” That game was attended by then President Richard Nixon who predicted the Longhorns would go on to become national champions. He was a perfect fit for then head coach Darrell Royal who introduced the wishbone offense, which didn’t work for the Longhorns in those first two games of the season before Street took over, and he exceeded at it. Eventually Texas went on to win the National Championship just like Nixon said they would. Winning the National Championship was something that hadn’t been done until 2005 when Vince Young led the Horns to a win over the USC Trojans. After his time with the Longhorns, Street went on and had a successful career in finance. He founded a firm in Austin which focuses on working with plaintiffs in legal disputes.

Grace Unplugged

September 30th, 2013

Another faith based-movie is headed to the big screen. Whenever this happens, I can’t help but cringe because of the low-budget and poor acting and I ask myself how much good is it really doing? First of all, the lack of quality in the writing and acting can be unbearable and a turnoff to Christians and non-Christians alike. It’s has that “Preaching to the Choir” type of mentality.

graceIf you like the movie, you’re probably a Christian. The opposite is not true however as many Christians can’t have a hard time dealing with these type of films whereas those who do not claim to be Christians certainly won’t rave about these type of film the same way they would about the latest award-winning films.

Anyway, the movie Grace Unplugged is about an 18-year old girl named Grace Trey who chases her dream of making it big in the music industry. The young girl helps her father lead worship at their church but the desire to play on a bigger stage increases so she moves to Los Angeles only to find out those dreams were empty and that she was chasing those dreams instead of chasing God.

Although the message itself sounds like it’s positive, I can’t help but be skeptical and wonder if the Christian movie industry is doing more harm than good.

jerryseinfeld
The star and creator of the Show about Nothing is headed to the Rose Capital. On Thursday, Oct. 24, Jerry Seinfeld will be at the UT Tyler Cowan Center doing his standup comedy routine.

The writer, comedian and actor had arguably the most popular sitcom of all time which lasted for nine season After Seinfeld (the show that is) ended in 1998, Seinfeld (Jerry, that is) went on tour doing his comedy acts instead of pursuing further acting.

In 2008, Seinfeld appeared as Barry, the main character of Bee Movie. A year later, it was announced that the crew of the popular 90’s sitcom would appear for a reunion in Larry David’s HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In 2012, Seinfeld started a Youtube show called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee in which he picks up another comedian as they drive to get coffee in an old or unusual car. Each episode lasts roughly 7-25 minutes and gets millions of views. The show can be found still and Seinfeld continues to record and air the episodes.
