Tyler sportswriter indicted on child sex assault charge

October 31st, 2013

Tyler Morning Telegraph sportswriter Harold Wilson, 36, was indicted by a Smith County grand Jury, Oct. 30, according to documents released by the 241st Judicial District Court.

Last June, Wilson turned himself into police on a charge of sexual assault of a child. Wilson was accused of having improper relations with a 15-year old female from John Tyler High School.

The student told police the two met at a John Tyler football game and they attended the same church. The arrest affidavit stated that Wilson had given the girl rides home from the games back in 2012. The teenage girl said on the way home, he would stop at local parks where they would engage in sexual relations.

Reports say an elder at their church became aware of the relationship and confronted the two about it and they both admitted to it. The elder reported it to police and the affidavit states that Wilson sent a text to the girl which read, “Have u told anyone at the [at the church] about us? Honestly? I think I’m in trouble. If you did say something like I’m thinking u did, don’t EVER talk to me or text me Ever again!”

Wilson also told her in a text, “This is going to turn my world upside down.”

He was released from Smith County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Homefront

October 31st, 2013

At the end of November, Homefront will hit theaters everywhere around the country.

The action thriller has an all star cast. Jason Statham stars as Phil Broker,  a former DEA agent, who moves with his daughter to a small quiet town to escape the troubles of his past. Little did he know he would soon cross paths with Gator,  a local meth druglord who is played by James Franco.

Broker’s peace and quiet world is soon interrupted after discovering the town’s drugs and violence. Broker unexpectadly and against his will is forced back into action to save his daughter and his new town.

The film is directed by Gary Fleder and is based on a novel by Chuck Logan with the same title and was adapted into a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. Others stars in the film include Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth.

One review from Rotten Tomatoes states, “It looks like business as usual from the Jason Statham Action Movie Production Line but the oddly left field casting of James Franco and Winona Ryder as the villains is interesting (although mainly for Winona…)”

Another review adds, “Winona’s in it, what can I say?”.

The movie is set to hit the big screen Wednesday, November 27.

Greenberg Turkeys

October 31st, 2013

It’s crazy to think we’re even talking about this, but it’s November, and in four weeks we’ll be celebrating Turkey Day. What better way way to do so (other than by watching football all day) than by enjoying a nice Greenberg Turkey?

The Greenberg Smoked Turkey has been a family tradition in East Texas for four generations and many people have raved about the delicious bird.

The Dallas Morning News says, “The Greenberg was one of the most flavorful turkeys we’ve eaten, with a rich, moist texture to boot.”

Fast Company Magazine adds, “By the time you’re done chewing that first bite, you’re already searching for the order card to send one these aromatic delights to your friends, your parents — even your in-laws.”

Texas Monthly says, “A mahogany-hued smoked turkey from Greenberg, tender and juicy, is such a holiday tradition in some families that they’d sooner do without a Christmas tree.”

Finally, Kiplinger.com says, “Of the five mail-order birds we’ve sampled, the one from Greenberg Smoaked Turkey in Tyler, Tex., took top honors for its potent hickory flavor as well as its mahogany skin and tender, juicy meet.”

Ryan officially retires

October 31st, 2013

It’s official. Nolan Ryan is no longer the CEO of the Texas Rangers.

When the 66-year old Ryan announced his decision a couple weeks ago, it wasn’t a huge surprise but the state of Texas mourned.
Many people have speculated whether or not he’ll move to Houston to work with the Astros where his son, Reid, is now President. However, Ryan says he has no intentions of doing that.

“Will I be the CEO of another major league ballclub? No, I won’t,” Ryan said at a news conference at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. “But I’m not going to sit here today and tell you that I don’t know what a year from now might bring. This might be the final chapter of my baseball career. If there was something else I did, it certainly wouldn’t be in the role I had with the Rangers.”

Ryan doesn’t have many enemies. Both Texas teams claim him as does the entire sport of baseball.

“On behalf of Major League Baseball, I thank Nolan for his service to the Texas Rangers since 2008, a successful era that has been most memorable to the club’s fans,” MLB commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. “During times of significant change for the franchise, Nolan has been a constant — accessible, dedicated and an icon to his fellow Texans who love our game.”

Former Texas Governor and the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush often attended Rangers games with Ryan, and says he wished him the best.

“The Rangers will miss his presence — and I will miss sitting next to my pal at the ballpark,” Bush said in a statement sent by his office. “Laura and I wish Nolan and Ruth all the very best.”
