Baseball season underway

February 28th, 2014

I don’t know how many times I’ve run into people I know at a Texas Rangers game. You would think the 90 miles or so between Tyler and Arlington would be enough of a buffer zone to where that doesn’t happen much but it does, even though there are thousands of fans at the loudest ballpark cheering on their beloved Rangers.

It just comes to show one thing; Tylerites, among millions of other Texans, love their Rangers. It’s been a long wait for baseball season to start back up but the good new is the wait is almost over.

The Rangers open the season at home Monday, March 31 against the Philadelphia Phillies. I’m not crazy about opening up on a Monday night nor about opening the year against a National League team but I’m pumped about the season either way.

There are a lot of new faces this year as the team has had a complete makeover. Ian Kinsler is a Tiger and Prince Fielder is a Ranger. David Murphy is an Indian. Nolan Ryan is out. Shin-Soo Choo is in.

It’s going to be different for sure, and perhaps a bit sad. OK, there’s no perhaps about it and it will take a long time getting used to it, but I’m ready to watch the Rangers take part in America’s pastime. So all I can say is, “Take me out to the ballgame.”

Divergent

February 28th, 2014

There’s a lot of talk about a movie called “Divergent.” To me, it looks like a movie that would have the same audience as Hunger Games, but what do I know? I never read the books or saw that movie either.

Divergent is the story of a girl named Tris Prior. She learns she’s different and won’t ever fit in with the rest of society. There is a plot to kill her and the others who are categorized with others as being “Divergent”.

This futuristic scifi story shows society divided into five factions, each of which represents a different virtues. Teens, for example, must decide whether its best to stay in that faction or change, but if they do change, there’s no looking back.

Tris Prior undergoes some special and intence physical and psychological tests where she and others discover that she is in fact a Divergent, which means she doesn’t fit into one of the five categories.

Prior has a tough decision to make in regards as to whether or not to reveal her secret, but if she does so at the wrong time and place, it could mean the end of her family.
She is played by Shailene Woodley. Other stars appearing in the movie are Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Ashley Judd, Casimere Jollette and others.

High School Hoops Playoffs

February 27th, 2014

We’re deep into high school playoff basketball and the road to the state championships come through the Rose Capital of the World. Tyler Junior College is slated to host several playoff games in the Regional Semifinals.

If you live in Tyler and are a basketball fan, why not check out some hoops action at TJC? You would have a chance to see some of the best among the best in the state of Texas. It’s may also be a tremendous opportunity to see tomorrow’s biggest stars of the game today.

The Regional Semifinals are set to being Friday, Feb. 28 and games will take place all day Friday and all day Saturday, March 1. The tournament at TJC will run all the way up until the state championship games which will later take place March 6-8 at UT in Austin.  The schools playing at TJC are 1A schools but that doesn’t mean it won’t be entertaining nonetheless and there are several very talented athletes.

So if you’re looking for something to do but don’t have a heck of a lot of money, why look any further than watching some high quality basketball? You can witness history and see the next state champions in person.

Noah

February 27th, 2014

Do you remember the NBC special of Noah’s Ark back in 1999? It starred Jon Voight as Noah. There were so many things wrong about it, I don’t know where to start. Lot was in the movie even though he didn’t come until what, 1,000 years later. That wasn’t even the worst part about it…There were pirates. Yes, pirates. You can still find it online. Just go to Youtube and search something like “Jon Voight Noah’s Ark.”

Anyway, when a relative asked me if I had seen the trailer to the new movie about Noah, I thought he was making reference to that and weeks later I found out that was not the case. Russell Crowe stars as Noah in “Noah”.

As far as I know, there are no pirates and I didn’t see Lot when I watched the trailer.

However, it did look like there were things added to the story, or at least things the Bible didn’t mention, like balls of fire falling from the sky. The story of Noah, although a great one, doesn’t need to be on the big screen in my opinion. If you feel the need to add details to make it interesting, just leave it alone. Also, there’s really no way to do it justice. By reading the scriptures account, we’re simply reading about what happened. A movie with Hollywood actors tries to recreate stuff that sincerely can’t be recreated.

I’ve haven’t decided whether or not I will see the movie for myself but overall, it has potential. I admire the works of Crowe and there aren’t too many movies he was in that completely flopped.

What’s your opinion of the idea of the film and do you plan to see it?

The Monuments Men

February 1st, 2014

The Monuments Men, a movie with an all star cast, is slated to hit the bit screen nation wide Friday, Feb. 7. This action drama is based on a true story of what has been referred to as, “the greatest treasure hunt in history.” It’s a World War II story where a platoon which is tasked by FDR goes into a Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves to return them back to their rightful owners. The art is trapped behind enemy lines and the Germans have specific orders to destroy everything in their path. This platoon of seven guys is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. These guys are museum directors, curators and art historians, not military experts. Time is running low for these Monuments Men as they attempt to avoid the destruction of 1,000 years of culture and dodge the Germans. George Clooney directs and stars in the film. His co-stars are Matt Daman, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and Cate Blanchett. The movie was originally slated to be released in December of 2013 but Clooney asked for more post-production time due to special effects and other details not being completely ready. The fear was the movie wouldn’t get the proper accolades without them.
