Tax Season

March 31st, 2014

Raise your hand if you enjoy doing taxes? If you raised your hand at that, you’re either lying or you’re just flat out crazy. Taxes are by no means fun and they’re rarely easy.

I prefer to do mine via Turbo Tax though. That way, I don’t have to drive anywhere and I can simply type the numbers that are in one box into the correct location on the screen. However, I was skeptical about doing my taxes on Turbo Tax for many reasons. One reason is I hate math and I don’t always trust myself when it comes to crunching numbers.

In fact, I may or may not take mine to H&R Block. When I was doing my takes, I accidentally left off a digit when I punched in my annual salary and saw I was getting back a lot of money. Then when I realized the mistake, I made my correction, and somehow my tax return number went down. Way down. What the….?

This made absolutely no sense whatsoever. One would figure the more money one makes in a year, the more taxes that are withheld and the more money one would receive on his taxes.

However, things are always as appear and there are many people in the government who lack common sense. If what I was told was correct, the good news is it extremely easy to file but the bad news is I’m not getting nearly as much as I hoped. If it’s incorrect, I’ll be glad to find that out by taking it to H&R Block. Thankfully there are several of those around in Tyler and throughout East Texas.

Captain America 2:

March 31st, 2014

This Friday, April 4, one of the most patriotic super heroes is set to make his return to the big screen. Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, tries to find his true identity as he has to battle an enemy known as the “Winter Soldier.”

The story line takes place a couple years after the last one released in 2011. Rogers is ordered to save a vessel from Algerian pirates and soon goes head to head with the Winter Soldier.

The film is directed by Anthony Russo and Joes Russo. It’s written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It’s based on the comic books by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and has all star cast of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastioan Stan, Frak Grillo, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Haley Atwell and many others.

One review on IMDB.com says, “Is it perfect? Of course not but it does not feel that it is drugging forever or raising any boring flags. There is plenty of plot, intelligence and sweet characters moments to keep anyone satisfying. This is blockbuster at its finest, a superhero film with heart, immersive action and subtle touches of humour. Totally recommended.”

The film has been rated PG 13 for intense violence.

The madness continues

March 31st, 2014

Ever wonder why they call it March Madness? If so, I think that question was answered this month. Who would have ever seen Mercer taking down Duke in the first round? How many people predicted Dayton to go to the Sweet 16?

Warren Buffett offered $1 billion to anyone with a perfect bracket. It’s safe to say it didn’t happen and quite honestly, I’m pretty sure Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are about as real as a perfect bracket.

We definitely saw plenty of March Madness in the throughout the tournament. Three-of-the four 12 seeds beat a 5, and that fourth almost happened. One of those 12 seeds was Stephen F. Austin who defeated Shaka Smart and his VCU Rams in dramatic fashion, and it just might have been the beset game of the entire tournament so far.

There’s still madness left over for April as the Final Four is set to take place in Arlington on Saturday, April 5. The Florida Gators are set to take on a seven seed in the UConn Huskies while the eight seed Kentucky Wildcats will go up against the two seed Michigan Wolverines.

It’s hard to be sure of anything in the tournament but if there’s anything we know for sure, it’s that we’ll never know. Enjoy the rest of the madness.

Rio 2

March 31st, 2014

Some of your favorite birds are back for a sequal. The crew of Rio return for Rio 2 as Blu and his wife Jewel along with their kids discover that there are others of their kind in the Amazon. Jewell and the kids fit right in with those new birds once they discover them because as it turns out, they’re her own family member.

Things didn’t work out quite as well as planned for Blu however as he tries to fit in but that’s easier said than done seeing as he has to learn how to deal with his own father-in-law.

The movie contains an all-star cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Fox, Kristin Chenoweth, Andy Garcia, George Lopez, runa Mars and many others.

One movie reviewer on IMBD.com says, “This movie is entertaining and story is nice too. Although I have rated it the same as Rio, I think this was a little better. Found it to be quite funny and more action packed as well.”

Another says, “While it wasn’t the best movie or even the best animation I have seen this year, this movie is definitely entertaining.”

It is set to hit theaters April 11.

Play Ball

March 31st, 2014

You know the scene in Field of Dreams where they’re throwing the ball around and one guy asks, “Is this Heaven”?

Well, that’s kind of the effect baseball has on people, and now it’s officially underway.

It provides an atmosphere unlike any other. What’s not to like about the sound of the at hitting a ball traveling 90 miles per hour? And the smell of the freshly cut grass? Where else do you go where you high five and become great friends with complete strangers?
I’m not talking about the Texas Rangers specifically. I’m talking about the sport itself, America’s Pastime. Now that it’s officially here, American’s everywhere can enjoy.

This season, many Tylerites will hit up I-20 and head west to Arlington to watch the Rangers. Others may go to the ballpark to watch whoever the Rangers are going up against that particular day. Others may just watch on TV from the comfort of their own homes or restaurant.
There are many ways to keep up with your team throughout the year.

I like other Tylerites, will watch the MLB from the beginning and throughout the year and will attend several games, because, well, how can you not? I truly believe that those who aren’t sports fans just haven’t given sports a fair shot. Why not try this year? You just might catch yourself asking yourself and others if you’re in Heaven.
