Chinese Delivery

September 30th, 2014

I’ve never lived close enough to a Chinese restaurant that delivers, at least not that I’m aware. The idea of having Chinese food delivered to the house was something I only saw in movies. I’ve obviously had pizza and other things delivered to my house but not Chinese. I’ve had Chinese takeout and I’ve had Chinese food delivered to my hotel room when staying in bigger cities.

Tyler has a bunch of restaurants and a fair share of them are Chinese but do any of them deliver?

We’ve got places like China King, China Buffet, China Star, China Express, Golden China, Peking, Cheng’s, Ming’s Café and several others.

When I lived near Houston, I frequented a Panda Express. It was a little out of the delivery range which was a shame because I would’ve definitely taken advantage of that.

There’s definitely no shortage of restaurants in Tyler and to ask for another one might be pretty ridiculous, but I think it might be kind of cool if one of the Chinese restaurants we do have added this service.

Right down the road from my old place is China Star, which is kind of fast food but I definitely took a liking to it. I know it won’t happen but it’d be cool if they delivered.

Don’t ditch sports

September 30th, 2014

There seems to be a pattern in conversations I’ve had with people lately. I’ve heard a handful of people talking about ditching cable or satellite and sticking with Netflix and Hulu. But Why? Don’t you know those services don’t provide live sporting events? Does anyone really have cable or satellite for the shows and movies?

In my head, I’m making guesses as to how long those people are going to last? How can you survive with not being able to tune into the baseball playoffs, or go back and forth between football games on Saturday’s and Sundays? Why would you not want to watch Monday Night Football? I’m perplexed, and I can’t find the answers to these and other questions.

Do those who cancel cable and satellite not realize just how many sports stations are on cable now? Are they holding on to false hope that live sporting events will soon be picked up by the online services?

I recently had to make one of the hardest decisions in my life. After having satellite service for about six years, I switched to cable. The hard part about it was losing the incredible sports package and downgrading to save some money. Seeing as how hard that decision was, I can’t imagine how hard of a decision it is for those choosing strictly Netflix or Hulu over DirecTV or Suddenlink Cable. Why would you do that to yourself?

MLB Playoffs

September 30th, 2014

It’s sad to think baseball season is over, at least for the Texas Rangers. After one of the worst (if not the absolute worst) seasons in history, there are several questions in the air about what this team will look like next season. We lost our president, our manager and several great players. However, baseball season isn’t entirely over just yet though.

No, the Rangers aren’t playing but we are at the start of the playoffs as the final 10 teams fight for one title; World Series champions.

As I sit here and type up this piece, I’m also enjoying watching the Kansas City Royals take on the Oakland Athletics in a one-game playoff round, and so far, it’s been extremely entertaining. As a Rangers fan who can’t stand Oakland, I so want the Royals to win. Kansas City going deep would be a great underdog story seeing as it’s something that hasn’t happened in nearly 30 years.

Each matchup, each game, each team and each player have great stories surrounding them. It’s not about Xs and Os. There’s so much strategy and hard work put in. Everybody has a journey as they try to get to the destination of the World Series.

I honestly feel bad for people who don’t enjoy America’s Pastime because it’s one less enjoyment they’re missing out on in their lives. It’s definitely a mystery because, I’m not quite sure what’s not to like. At any rate, I’d encourage people everywhere to check out the baseball postseason while there’s still a chance because after it’s over, it’s going to be a long time until we get it back again.

UT Tyler Football

September 29th, 2014

There has been a lot of talk, off and on, over the years about the possibility of UT Tyler getting a football team. On one hand, it’s strange to think that a university held in a town like Tyler doesn’t have football. Football is king in Texas and there have been a lot of professional athletes out of East Texas, and Tyler is the biggest town in East Texas. Tyler is home to Robert E. Lee High School, the biggest high school in East Texas and the only 6A school in East Texas. One would think the University of Texas at Tyler would compete on the gridiron on Saturdays.

But then when you think of it, maybe that’s exactly why UT Tyler doesn’t need football. The high school competition is above par. If you want to catch a college game, you can at least watch the Tyler Junior College Apaches or make a short trip to a nearby city or town to see college ball.

As a football fan, I think it’d be neat to be able to see UT Tyler get a football team but there are several factors you have to consider. It starts with a stadium. Sure they could play at Rose Stadium until they get their own but that would mean they share it with two high schools and a junior college. That would mean more wear and tear on the place and isn’t exactly convenient.

Then of course you get into the costs of things. The cost of tuition of the school would rise significantly and those attending there don’t want to pay for that kind of thing when they won’t reap the benefits.

Starting a football team is a several-year project. You need a coaching staff that’s willing to wait. You need a team and recruiting the proper players is no easy task. Equipment is certainly not cheap and the team itself won’t be anything to write home about in the first couple years.

There’s nothing wrong with the quality of football in this town as we speak. If it ain’t broke, let’s not try to fix it by adding a Division III school with a mediocre team at best to start off.

Dunkin Donuts returns to Tyler

September 29th, 2014

I have no idea how much money of mine went to the old Dunkin Donuts in Tyler. I used to go there before work or on a coffee break since my job was right around the corner. I also used to go before church from time to time. Nothing hit the spot quite like a Boston Cream washed down by a cup of coffee. Really, Dunkin Donuts coffee is second to none. Although I love Starbucks, I’d have to say Dunkin Donuts is my favorite. At any rate, when Dunkin Donuts became “Donut Place” (no, not “Palace”), it was kind of like a part of me died.

I remember a lady who worked there told me since the name change, they were even better before. Yeah, that wasn’t the case. In my opinion, the coffee was more watered down and all the donuts were still pretty good, things weren’t quite the same.

Plus, I think we all knew it was a matter of time until that store closed down. That’s exactly what happened and ever since and Tyler has been without a Dunkin Donuts for far too long. However, that’s about to change. Dunkin Donuts is returning to Tyler. A new shopping center on the loop and Kinsey will feature both Baskin Robins and Dunkin Donuts. I think it’s safe to say I know where I’ll get coffee and a doughnut in the mornings.
