The future of Adrian Peterson

March 1st, 2015

Unless you’re living under a rock (a really, really heavy rock), you’ve probably heard a lot about the Adrian Peterson situation. The East Texan was suspended for the entire 2014-2015 NFL season for child abuse. Whether or not that was a fair punishment, is a different discussion. The question now is, “where will Peterson play?”

Peterson has spent his entire NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings, but as he approaches the end of his career, chances are he will likely have a new home in the 2015 season. His situation is a lot like Barry Sanders in the 90s. The Vikings don’t have a solid quarterback, no great wide receivers and the defense needs help to say the least. If Peterson wants to win the Super Bowl, Minnesota is not the place to make that happen, but as we all know, it all comes down to money, and if that’s what he wants, that’s what he’ll get.

His dad has said Peterson is interested in a handful of teams, one of which is the Cowboys. Peterson, who’s from Palestine, would be close to home if he came to the Cowboys and as we all know, Jerry Jones likes to make a big splash. However, if you’re hoping this happens, don’t be optimistic. There’s enough talk about whether or not the Cowboys will be able to sign Dez Bryant and Demarco Murray. If they can’t, they certainly can’t afford to bring in Peterson. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see where the East Texas running back plays next season.

Live Long and Prosper

February 28th, 2015

You didn’t have to be a Star Trek fan, or a Trekie as they’re often called, to know who Spock was. The famous character of Star Trek’s original series was an icon, and now, the actor, Leonard Nimoy who portrayed the Vulcan famous for his “Live Long and Prosper” sign is no longer with us as a he died Friday.

In 2014, Nimoy revealed that he was suffering chronic lung disease even though he had stopped smoking three decades ago, and less than two weeks before his death, he was taken to the hospital for severe chest pains.

Nimoy tweeted, “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP.”
He certainly left many memories, especially with Treckies, whether it was the TV series or movies. Although his role as Spock is what Nimoy was most famous for, he also had other acting and directing roles.

Nimoy’s co-star, William Shatner, who played the role of Captain James T. Kirk, tweeted “I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.”

Nimoy, who died at the age of 83, could have lived a little longer, but nonetheless, he certainly did live long and he definitely prospered.

Church of Wells

February 28th, 2015

Thankfully we’ve not heard much about Westboro Baptist Church, you know, the “church” (or more like a cult) that pickets funerals. However, after recent conversations, I wonder if East Texas might have a similar active group.
Let me first preface this by saying I’m simply raising the question about this group, not flat out jumping to conclusions because I am curious, and I’d figure they’re not as extreme as Westboro Baptist. The group I’m referring to goes by the “Church of Wells”, as in Wells, Tx.

Last July, I was in Nacogdoches, my college town, for the city’s firework display, and members of the Church of Wells were scattered about. Some were making conversation while others were shouting at the top of their lungs, even during our National Anthem, which to say the least, completely rubbed me the wrong way.
During the fireworks and patriotic music, one member of this institution yelled out something to the effect of, “The fact that ya’ll are enjoying these fireworks is proof that ya’ll put vanity before God.” Then we kept hearing “vanity, vanity, vanity,” being yelled over and over.

One member actually told my friend that based on the fact that he was attending the event, that he was in fact not a Christian. First of all, I’ll let God judge whether or not one has a relationship with Him. Second of all, if you can’t enjoy fireworks to celebrate the birthday of the greatest nation in the history of the world, what can you celebrate?

That method of ‘witnessing’ is the wrong way. Yelling out judgmental and assuming accusations is no way to turn someone to God. It’s not making disciples. I certainly hope the Church of Wells doesn’t thrive to be like Westboro Baptist.

Run All Night

February 23rd, 2015

Stop me if you’ve heard this before but there’s a movie coming out starring Liam Neeson in which his character goes on a rampage to protect his family.

No, it’s not taken….Anyway, after someone threatens to kill his child, Neeson…. Not, it’s not Taken 2 either, but can I get to back to what I was saying?

In this film, Neeson’s character feels bad for not being the father he should have been in the past and tries to make it up for lost time by being there for his kid whom he abandoned a long time ago….. No, it’s not Taken 3 either… Geez.

His son, Liam Neeson’s son, not his daughter, is in trouble in this one…

No, there’s no such thing as Taken 4, at least not yet, and let’s hope it remains that way. As I was saying though, Neeson plays a character by the name of Jimmy Conlon, a former mobster once known as the “Gravedigger” who ticked off the wrong people after Conlon’s son Mike is the target and on the run.  As far as Jimmy is concerned, it’s his responsibility to keep Mike alive. That’s the least he can do for not being there for his son in years past.

The movie is called, “Run All Night” and is set to be released into theaters on March 13.
