The 2011 Distinguished Lecture Series at the Cowan Center

July 13th, 2011

Well, as impossible as it seems we’re little over half way through the summer of 2011 already. And with as hot as it’s been I’m looking forward to the fall. One of the great fall events is the UT Tyler Cowan Center‘s Distinguished Lecture Series. I’m not a season ticket holder or anything but I have managed to attend quite a few events there over the years. I always look forward to the release of the list of fall participants. Well the season’s up- coming speakers are great. I hope to attend both events. The first speaker is former senator Fred Thompson, and he will appear on September 13th. The Next is writer and satirist P. J. O’Rourke and he will be speaking on January 19th.

Fred Thompson has had a unique and diverse career. He’s been an actor with many roles to his credit, most notably, that of Law and Order’s “Arthur Branch.” His Political Career consisted of two terms in the United States Senate, which included several significant committee appointments. In 2008 the former senator jumped into the Republican presidential primary race amid much early excitement. Once in the race however, the campaign failed to maintain the energy that launched it. Since his unsuccessful run for the presidential nomination, Thompson has hosted his own talk radio program and has hit the lecture circuit. With his frank southern charm, the senator has made a name for himself as a straight shooter who doesn’t shy away from discussing tough political topics. The evening’s appearance will begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets go on sale in August.

Patrick Jake O’Rourke is a prolific writer and journalist, known for his searing wit. He’s written for a host of magazines and news papers including: Rolling Stone, the Atlantic Monthly, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, and on and on. He is a self proclaimed libertarian, whose topics generally center on government and culture. He’s an economic conservative, with moderate to (more) liberal views on social issues. He’s written more than sixteen books including best sellers like “Parliament of Whores,” and “Give War a Chance.” His most recent book is entitled, “Don’t Vote, It Just Encourages the Bastards.”O’Rourke is an enormously entertaining writer who’s given us some of the funniest and most memorable one- liners of the last thirty years or so. His sure to be memorable lecture, will be on Thursday of January the 19th, beginning at 7:30 pm. As with Senator Thompson’s appearance, tickets for Cowan Center members start in August. General public can begin purchasing them in November. For more information on these or other events, visit the Cowan Center website at http://www.uttyler.edu/cowan/# .

The Nutcracker comes to Tyler

November 19th, 2010

Tyler Texas Nut Cracker PlayDecember 4, 2010 the famous ballet The Nutcracker is coming to Tyler. The East Texas Symphony Orchestra along with the Tyler Junior College Academy of Dance are putting on the beautiful ballet. The matinee will be at 2:00 and the evening concert will be at 7:30 at UT Tyler Cowan Center.

The popular German ballet is known all over the world and has been preformed by all different ballet groups. The story is about a young German girl, Clara, who dreams about being with a Nutcracker. But she can not be with her love without fighting off an evil mouse king with seven heads, which ended up only taking nothing more that hitting him in the head with a shoe.

It starts off with Clara at Christmas, she breaks a dear toy, a Nutcracker. Once the clock strikes midnight she begins to shrink and the Nutcracker, and tree and everything around her starts to come to life.

The Nutcracker wakes up and leads an army into war with the Mouse King and his army of mice. The Nutcracker is not match for the mice army as they quickly start to take him away. Clara then throws her shoe at the Mouse King and kills him. The Nutcracker turns into a prince and sweeps Clara off her feet.

There are many different worlds that you will travel through during the story from snow lands to candy worlds. While traveling these worlds they meet a Sugar Plum Fairy and dancing snowflakes. The ballet has everything from fight scenes to love stories. The beautiful costumes will bring the story to life in front of your eyes.

This ballet is a winter favorite. The Nutcracker has become a big part of Christmas. You can not walk through a Christmas decoration store without seeing something on the story. This is a great date idea for the winter season, it is something different in Tyler than going out to eat or to a movie.

Fall at the Cowan Center

September 18th, 2010

When writing on up- coming events in our area, it always pays to keep an eye the UT- Tyler Cowan Center. They have done a terrific job of keeping a good flow of authors, actors, heads of state, and other dignitaries flowing through Tyler. Through the end of September and into October the center will be welcoming some extremely interesting and accomplished men.

Mr. Oscar Arias, is the former president of Costa Rica, and the 1985 winner of the Nobel Peace prize. In the nineteen eighties he worked to establish peace I Central America, and helped the nations there find a voice among the louder yells of period superpowers. While his politics lean to the left, his first hand take on events brings to life a complex and complicated string of events. Mr. Arias has spent his professional life working to advance peace as well as free and progressive government in Central America. He will be appearing in Tyler on the twenty first of this month.

John Lithgow is the winner of a number of awards. He has been in too many films to list here and has starred on the Broadway stage as well. On September thirtieth he brings his one man show to the Cowan Center. Mr. Lithgow will perform Stories by Heart, which is taken from the noted classic Uncle Fred Flitsby P.G. Wodehouse, and Haircut, by Ring Lardner. Mr. Lithgow also incorporates tales from his own life in the telling. With a career that has been long and prolific, his appearance in Tyler promises to be an enjoyable event.

What can I say here that we don’t already know about the Former President? After serving as Governor of our beloved state, Mr. George W. Bush presided over one of the most trying and dangerous periods in our history. He was derided constantly by those who opposed him even while remaining committed to protecting the country from the threat of terrorism. His plain spoken style re-assured the nation in the dark days following 9-11. Agree or disagree with his politics, there was never any doubt that Mr. Bush did his best to follow policy that he believed right. No can know for sure what the future holds for the President’s legacy, but it will surely record that Mr. Bush’s term was formative in terms of foreign policy. Since his retirement, the President has returned to his home state to build his library, write and speak. He will visit Tyler on October sixteenth, as a headliner of the Distinguished Lecture Series this fall. For more information on the series, or just to peak at what’s coming up at the Cowan Center, visit their webpage at http://www.cowancenter.org/index.htm.
