Wayne Brady coming to Tyler

April 30th, 2014

Wayne Brady’s “It’s My Line” comedy tour is coming to Tyler at the UT Tyler Cowan Center in a couple days.

The CBS start from “Let’s Make a Deal” and “How I Met Your Mother” will perform stand up Friday night May 2 at 7:30 p.m. He’s also known for producing “Whose Line is it Anyway.”
He’s coming to Tyler with many bits, some of which involve him singing, dancing and acting.

His career got a jump start with Whose Line is it Anyway, and he won an Emmy for it. He also won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Anyone interested can see Brady on CBS on the daytime TV show called “Let’s Make a Deal. He has been nominated three times for an Emmy for his work on that program.

He has also done several voice overs and played roles in TV series such as Sofia the First, Being Mary Jane, Trip Tank, Real Husbands of Hollywood and several others.
Brady was born and raised in Florida. When he was 16, he decided he wanted to join the military, but that was before he starred in a high school play which ultimately paved the way for his comedy and acting career.

The Second Annual UT Tyler Classic Car Show

September 15th, 2011

My pop loves old cars. He often watches restoration shows on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel or TLC. Something about the bad economy seems to help the popularity of those types of shows. I guess it’s a sort of escapism; an opportunity to live vicariously through people having a better time than we are. Of course it’s also nostalgic. These cars bring back memories of better days, like youthful photographs from a bygone era. Well this Saturday East Texans have an opportunity relive some of those memories in a small way, in person.

This Saturday, the parking lot of UT Tyler on Lake Dr. and University Blvd. will be the site of the second annual Classic Car Show. Original and modified vehicles from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s will be on display from 9 am until 2 pm. Awards will be given for the following categories: best paint, best interior, people’s choice, best in show, a crank it up contest, a rev it up contest, and the best wheels contest. There will also be live music and food venders, including (one of my personal favs), Stanley’s Bar-b-que. Admission is twenty dollars and the first fifty registrations will get a free t-shirt. For more information contact Ronald Gorman, at (903)253-3213 or Valerie Hammontree, at (214)232-9914. Weird Vehicle Traveling by the weather station and Chili’s

April 26th, 2011

Tornado Tracker Vehicle perhaps?
My brother was able to get a good picture of this weird looking vehicle driving through Tyler Texas. It isn’t a hummer but looking at the weird pipes sticking out of it I would say maybe it is a storm chaser vehicle that chases tornado’s?

There is also a 360 window view at the top of it but I can’t seem to find any holes for a military gun which makes me think it is a storm chaser?

I really have no clue what it is but does look like a mixture between a dually truck and a hummer of some kind but the answer still alludes me.

Later on during the day Tyler Texas and surrounding areas were deluged with quite a few tornados. Tyler Junior College (TJC) had several buildings destroyed by a tornado and UT Tyler was hit too.

Art in the Park at the Goodman / LeGrand Museum

April 14th, 2011

This Saturday, April the sixteenth a new event called the Art in the Park, will be held on the grounds of the Goodman / LeGrand Museum. The event will feature local artists demonstrating a variety of forms, styles and techniques. Every form from watercolor to pottery and sculpture will be on display. There will also be lectures delivered by local professors from UT Tyler. Tours of the Museum and musical performances will be taking place throughout the day.

The Goodman / LeGrand Home, was first built in 1859, and is really a time capsule. Its original owner was killed in the War Between the States. Prior to his death, it was purchased by and army surgeon, who eventually passed it on to his daughter, who in-turn left it to the City of Tyler in 1939. It is now a museum containing original furniture, and other artifacts from the families, lives and careers of those who occupied it. Saturday’s event will run from ten am until four pm. Admission is free, so it’s a great opportunity to support the local arts, and take in some interesting local history. For more information, please call (903) 531-1286, or visit the following websites: http://www.kltv.com/story/12576440/art-in-the-park-at-the-goodman-legrand?redirected=true ; http://www.cityoftyler.org/Default.aspx?tabid=203 and http://www.calendarwiz.com/calendars/calendar.php?&crd=tylertexas&cid[]=75947&cid[]=76434&cid[]=75948&

Christ Church’s Epiphany Group

October 21st, 2010

Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler has recently unveiled a new program. The Epiphany Group is a two tiered class and or outreach to college and post- college age people seeking a more active spiritual life and a community with whom to connect. Father Matt Boulter (assistant rector of Christ Church) directs the groups, which meet Tuesday night on the campus of UT Tyler, and Thursday nights in the Grelling- Spence Building at Christ Church in down town Tyler respectively.

The Epiphany group’s goal is to explore the concept of community as it pertains to the Christian faith. Father Matt leads the group in an investigation of what it means to live a Christian life and participate in a Christian community in the context of a modern society that seeks pull us in many directions at the same time. The group has both a social component, and more formal one. Meaning there are social outings, local outreach projects and classroom style meetings. Being that Christ Church is an Episcopal Church the classes maintain a loose liturgical form, but all Christians (and non-Christians for that matter) are welcome regardless of denominational affiliation, and would be comfortable with the experience. The group is currently beginning a new study of the book of Galatians entitled “Grace Changes Everything: New Freedom, New Family.”
