Lindsey Field in Tyler

June 14th, 2012

Tyler’s city parks are becoming increasingly central to my sense of community in this town. I realize that for most people it’s probably always been this way, and I’m only now noticing it since I’m now an adult and a parent. Here at Tyler TX Directory, we’ve written fairly extensively on the various city parks. Rose Rudman, Bergfield and Faulkner Parks have all graced our pages at one point or another and all are great parks. A number of them have been improved in recent years. One park, on which we’ve not written much, deserves a mention, and that’s Lindsey Park, on Greenbriar road and spur 364. The park has at least five baseball / softball fields, about six or seven different soccer fields and a frisbee golf course. All the facilities are really nicely developed, and well maintained. The park has also recently added some new children’s playground equipment.

I’ve already spent some evenings with my son at this park since the summer started. Even (and perhaps especially), when there’s no one else around, it’s a great place to hit a few balls and run the bases. When that gets old the new swings and jungle gym are a great way to burn off a little excess energy before hitting the showers and heading to bed. So when the kids get rowdy this summer, try visiting this park. You’ll find lots of space to run, and play.

KE Cellars in Tyler

July 11th, 2011

KE CellarsTyler has always been in a dry county, sending people miles away on a drive to the county line for any alcoholic needs. However Keipersol Estates has created an exceptional location in Tyler Texas through the KE Cellar located in the French Quarter. KE Cellars is truly unique because of it’s ability to sell wine within Tyler, it has been said that the local status of the winery has brought them favor with Tyler’s legal permission. Tyler has thoroughly opposed such controversial ventures in the past, yet perhaps the equestrian nature of a business is what’s important rather than the simple matter of alcohol.  With an extravagant European feel, KE Cellars has created an atmosphere synonymous with an East Texas wine connoisseurs fantasy of rustic class and sophisticated intoxication.

Stepping into a strip mall store has never felt so much akin to a ranch wine cellar. The staff are extremely dutiful to the attendance of their customers offering information on any wine, upholding the level of professionalism assumed of a wine cellar even down to their formal uniforms. KE Cellars is much more than a cellar, with nightly music showcases, a giftshop and a wine processing area in the building this local wine cellar does much more than sell wine. KE Cellars doesn’t have to be only a wine shop, the Grande Cellar in the back of KE Cellars is open for anybody to enjoy a bottle of wine with friends, alone with some work or even for your next business meeting it makes a relaxing location for any day at any time.

Appropriately decorated with surrounding barrels of aging wine there’s a wi-fi connection as well as live music from six to nine in the Grande Cellar. KE Cellars can even mail you your wine to you if you aren’t able to come to the boutique yourself. Not only do they carry wines from the Keipersol Estates, in fact they have an enormous variety of wines from wineries across Texas and on a gratuitous note keep in mind that KE Cellars will give you a free wine tasting if you bring ten of their bags back to the store.

Kiepersol Estates own wine can range from light to quite intense. The 2010 Kiepersol Estates Moscato is a light selection of the Keipersol collection, described as a pale straw sweet wine it also has a palate immersed in the sweet tropical flavor of lychee and peach  with a subtle finish of honeydew to delicately accompany the fruitiness, this moscato won the bronze in the 2011 San Antonio News Express Wine Competition. But if a more intense wine is your pleasure than perhaps you should try the Kiepersol Estates numerous award winning 2007 Cabernet including a gold in the 2010 American Wine Society Commercial Competition. With flavors of caramel, chocolate and black currant at first the wine transitions with black pepper and structured tannins coming through as well as hints of coffee and black fruit for a strong vibrant finish to this highly acclaimed selection.

The 2011 Downtown Tyler Art Walk

May 28th, 2011

Downtown Tyler Art Walk

On June 2nd, Tyler will be holding its much praised Downtown Art Walk. The concept is basically this: ten downtown businesses open their doors for more than thirty local artists to display their original wares. Patrons can browse the shops for free and catch a glimpse of the kind of art their fellow East Texans are producing. There is also a public mural, where visitors to the event, can leave their own artistic mark. The mural will be on display on a temporary basis on the Tyler Square.

This event offers an opportunity for everyone. Art lovers from all over East Texas will come spend money here. The city of Tyler has the chance to continue its rejuvenation of the downtown square. Business owners there, get some great advertising (particularly those participating in the Art Walk). And of course the artists themselves receive some much deserved recognition. The businesses opening their doors to the artists include: Downtown Coffee Lounge, Subway,Balance Studio, Gallery Main Street, Cue:creative, Mango Express, Edward Jones Investments, East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Jakes, Salon Verve, and of course, T.B. Butler Plaza. I won’t list the artists, (there are too many) but suffice to say there should be something for everyone. There are also a number of sponsors of the event, including: The City of Tyler, Tyler Junior College and Austin Bank. The Art Walk’s hours run from 4pm until 8pm on June 2nd. Hopefully the turnout will continue to be large.

BJ’s restaurant coming soon!

January 31st, 2011

BJ's Restaurant in Tyler TX
I have gone to Houston quite a few times over the last couple years. Every time we have gone to Houston we eat at the BJ’s restaurant. I am excited to see that BJ’s is being built in Tyler. Tyler really does not need another restaurant, since there are basically only restaurants in Tyler, but I am very excited about BJ’s being built. The BJ’s restaurants in Houston are both restaurant and a brewery. Because of the fact that Tyler is a “dry county” this restaurant will not have a brewery and will just is a restaurant. I guess this fact will be a let down for some people, but the great variety and quality of food more than makes up for that fact. As you browse the large menu your mouth can not help but water from the great selection of food. The restaurant serves some of the best foods made with the perfect twist, no matter what your favorite food is (pasta, salad, sandwiches, steak, pizza, burgers, or giant stuffed potatoes) you will most likely find a dish at BJ’s restaurant that you will love. Just because they will not have the brewery does not mean that the restaurant will not be serving any alcohol. BJ’s restaurant will have their full wine, beer, cocktail, and specialty drinks.

The BJ’s restaurants also have ordering online! If you are like me, the only reason you really do not like to order take out, is because you have to sit in the restaurant for so long waiting for your food to be ready. By the time you food is done, you may as well ordered and ate at the restaurant; you would of got home around the same time. With the ordering online, you just go to the website and click on a location, browse the whole menu and put in your order. By the time you leave your home and get to the restaurant your food will be ready to take home. This is such a great and easy idea.

I can not wait for this restaurant to open. The construction is going up fast. I know that it will be a huge hit in Tyler, but even Tyler crowds will not keep from enjoying the great food at BJ’s.
