I love museums. I realize that may sound either snooty or nerdy depending on who I’m speaking to, but it’s true. And as much as I love my home town, one of the things I really miss about living in a large city is the opportunity to visit various traveling exhibits. Tyler has always made a goal of cultivating its own arts and cultural community. In the last few years it seems to me that these efforts are starting to show fruit. Between the various events put on by the colleges and those sponsored by various civic groups, Tyler does a pretty good job of offering educational opportunities to the community at large. One example is the new exhibit currently on display at the Tyler Museum of Art entitled: “Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture.”
On display are sixty alabaster panel sculptures, on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museumin London. The pieces date to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, and depict various religious scenes. They were originally produced by English artists and served various functions in English churches. In addition to the exhibit itself, a free lecture will be held on Thursday, September fifteenth, at five thirty pm, entitled “Christians Then & Now: Medieval Religious Art and Today’s Church.” The lecture will be presented by Father Matt Boulter, of Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler.
The exhibit will run from September through October, and this is the only stop it will be making, either in our state, or the American southwest. Hopefully Tylerites will avail themselves of the opportunity to experience some significant religious art. Admission is free for museum members and children ages 12 and under. Adult tickets are seven dollars, and student and senior tickets five dollars. To attend Father Matt’s lecture it is necessary to RSVP. Simply call the museum, office at (903) 595-1001. For more information on the exhibit itself, visit the Tyler Museum of Art webpage at http://www.tylermuseum.org/ObjectOfDevotion.aspx .

We have our restaurant coupon cell phone subscriber list and we have our general cell phone subscriber list of people in Tyler that want any and all coupons that are available for the Tyler area.
We are offering this service free to local businesses in Tyler. The catch is that you must give me something truly beneficial in the form of a coupon for your Tyler business for me to send it out to my valuable list.
My couponers are not too keen on getting crappy coupons as a text message on their cell phone. Their cell phone is their personal space and in order to invade that space I need some really stinking awesome stuff to send them.
I only send out 4 SMS messages a month to my list at the most. This is a really good fresh list of Tyler Texas shoppers waiting to come into your store provided you give them something of true value.
So please if you are a business or know someone who has a Tyler business please send me your best coupon offer in the comment section below or by using our contact page.
I haven’t been deliberately ignoring the final story of the DD vs. Toys R Us. I’ve just been too busy to sit down and write a follow up article until now. Our city’s current boiling controversy involving the Double D Ranch is, at least for now, settled. Judge Christi Kennedy, found in favor of the plaintiff, Toys R Us, and ruled that the corporation that owned El Chico was violating its lease when it converted the restaurant to the Double D Ranch; by employing a “semi nude,” “scantily clad” wait staff. The injunction put in place last month which barred “The Ranch” for advertising or employing its staff in their famous uniforms was upheld last week. No further changes to the premises are allowed without the consent of Toys R Us, but the restaurant is not prohibited from opening under any other name, provided it keeps with the rules of the injunction.
Now I have to concede, that it seems unwise for the restaurant’s owners to invest the money and time into reconstructing a building that may or may not be able to actually open in a town as conservative as Tyler. Had their lease been airtight I’d be the first to support their right to open regardless of the fact that I find their theme to be tacky and generally tasteless. That being said I hardly think the term “Semi- nude” really applies here. Scantily clad maybe, but even that is kind of nebulous. According to the reports I read, a trial will be held in November to determine the final word on the issue. However, with the injunction having been upheld thus far I don’t see anything changing over the next few months. I suspect what remains, is simply the groups involved, attempting to wrangle up any lost revenue. I could be wrong but I’ll be surprised if the case is overturned at this point. Readers who have any more info on the coming trial are invited to share it in the comments section. I’d be curious to know what remains to be decided. That being said, I strongly suspect that Tyler’s Double D Ranch idea is headed for the last round- up.
If you go down Broadway across from Discount Tire there is this furniture store with a gold painted roof. The store was called Tiny Treasures or something like that. There you will find the new Spirit Halloween store.
This store has it all, kids costumes, adult costumes, costumes for your dog. Keep in mind if you wait until the last minute most of the good costumes will be gone. Also these stores are kind of expensive and the masks probably have little kid and big kid/adult snot on them by the time it gets further on into October.
If you want to save money go ahead and shop for Halloween costumes online but we all know Spirit Halloween is in town only because they know better then many of us that we will procrastinate until the last minute.
I usually go into this store and buy some fake blood or something like that and just look around at all the gruesomeness. It’s fun just looking in there but I probably won’t be buying any masks or adult costumes and we are more likely to make my sons costume than to buy it at a store.
As a side note you may save a little money on your Halloween costume by going by the Card and Party Factory over by Super 1 Foods across from Casa Ole and Chick-Fil-a.
In case you missed it, summer is winding down (although temperatures outside don’t yet reflect the fact), and the fall school year is about to start. Some of the area private schools are starting the 17th, but most public institutions are kicking off on the 22nd. With this in mind the City of Tyler is reminding its citizens that starting Monday, its school zones will be going back into action. Area commuters would probably be wise to alter their routes if necessary and or possible. The zones can be a source of frustration if you find yourself in a time crunch on the way to work in the morning. They will be in operation from approximately 7:30 to 9:00 am, and 2:30 to 4:45 pm, depending on the school and its hours of operation. Different schools have plans to deal with traffic flow, but the city is reminding drivers to be alert at pedestrian crosswalks, and to look out for crossing guards directing traffic.
It’s also worth mentioning that cell phone use is prohibited in any and school zones. Financial penalties so these offences are much higher for those ticketing in Tyler’s school zones. For more info on the TISD schedules or that of Grace Christian School, (evidently that particular zone can be a headache for those who have to contend with it), go to www.tylerisd.org or www.gracetyler.org .
Has Tyler Heard the Last of the Double D?
