Tyler Texas Conservative Voter Guide 2012 – Grassroots America We The People

May 16th, 2012

Printer friendly conservative voter guide – click here

Update: GAWTP endorsed Ted Cruz as the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchinson ….by a vote of 7 of 9 Board Members

Thanks for requesting information about voter information and voter guides for the Smith County Primary election on May 29th …and for Early Voting which began Monday, May 14th and runs through Friday, May 25th.

The link below will allow you to get as comprehensive as you wish to get (the first two sub-sites listed) ….or it can give you a quick, handy guide (the third sub-site) which very concisely shows you the 11-races for which GAWTP has issued endorsements (based on the very high bar of requiring agreement by at least of 7 of the 9 Board members).

Click on www.gawtp.com and go to the second tab at the top entitled 2012 One Stop Voter Information. There you can drop down and bring up the following recommended sub-sites:

The Races

Then go down and click on Races. Use this section to get a comprehensive bio for each candidate for which GAWTP has endorsed and why GAWTP made the endorsements

Conservative Voter Guides

Here you will find six (6) conservative voter guides. Pick one or more to get a flavor of the most conservative candidates in each race

Handy Reference

Here you will get brief but pertinent information about early voting dates, times and locations as well as a handy guide on the 11-races for which the Board of Directors of GAWTP has issued endorsements

Please note, GAWTP has not yet made an endorsement for the Republican primary race for U.S. Senator because the GAWTP sponsored Senate Debate/Forum will take place Wednesday evening, May 16th  from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene, and we wish to wait for the conclusion of this debate before making a decision on an endorsement. Following the debate GAWTP is expected to vote on if indeed we wish to make an endorsement, and, if so, for whom the Board feels would be the best candidate to take the nomination. Incidentally, please attend this debate if at all possible. There is no doubt this will be a very informative forum. Next to the Presidency, the various races around the country for Senate nominations are the important races facing the voters of this (still) great country! Committed attendees to the Debate/Forum are: Lela Pittenger, Ted Cruz, Glenn Addison, Craig James and Tom Leppert (the staff of David Dewhurst has been notified, but we’ve not yet received word on whether or not he will be in attendance). If indeed we make an endorsement of a candidate at the conclusion of the Debate, I will forward that information to each after the vote Wednesday evening.

Hope this information helps, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have questions or need additional information. Remember it’s very important to vote, but even more important than simply voting is the need to be an informed voter!

The Comfort Inn & Suites in Tyler… & Beyond

May 7th, 2012

The fact that I grew up traveling has gone a long way to creating in me a nostalgia for staying in hotels. I realize that for many people who travel solely for work- related purposes that may seem like a fairly absurd statement. But for me, staying over night in a hotel was part of an adventure.  I’m sure that the level of one’s enjoyment of hotels is due solely to the purpose he or she has in traveling, but it’s almost always been a positive experience for me.

It’s always amusing to me to hear people discuss their requirements of a hotel. It must have this or that, it had better not be lacking in this amenity or that one… We all have different levels of expectations. I’m generally fairly easy to please. A cool, clean room, comfortable bed and working TV with Fox News and ESPN will generally keep me content. Throw in a good continental breakfast, and I may even stay another night.

On a recent trip to Dallas, (which was purely recreational mind you), I introduced my son the fun of staying in a hotel. We’ve stayed in them before, but he’s only four so his memories of previous trips are foggy at best.  On this outing I chose to stay in a Comfort Inn. Admittedly a simple establishment, but it came complete with a pool and all the amenities I’ve listed above, along with quite a few I didn’t. Now I realize this was Dallas, but I should reinforce the fact that Tyler also has a Comfort Inn which is arguably more upscale than the one I visited. Enough so that it should surely be able to meet the requirements of patrons whose needs are more… sophisticated than mine are.   The Comfort Inn and Suits in Tyler is located on South Broadway and has all the amenities one would expect, including an indoor pool, hot tube, fitness center and more. It’s generally on the more high- end side of the chain but prices are still reasonable. Tyler has what seems to me a surprising number of places to stay, but the Comfort is among the nicer choices. To read more or to make reservations read about them online or contact their office at (903) 534-0999.

Firestation Auto in Tyler

April 28th, 2012

I don’t know whether I’m like most people or not, but when it comes time to purchase a new car, I find that I become the worst of procrastinators. I hate the process. Sure I enjoy checking out vehicles on line or casually looking at cars on the lot, but I don’t like being rushed through a process, I don’t like collecting and filling out paper work, and while showing off the new ride to family is fun, I quickly tire of the phrase “Look at you! Moving up in the world huh?!”

Honestly, I’m not much of a car guy. I know what I like, but my knowledge is mostly limited to the practical. I also know when it’s past time to let an old admittedly beloved vehicle into the pasture for retirement.  Being that I drive an hour to work every day, one of my biggest concerns was gas mileage. Combine that with my safety and reliability concerns, my target market for cars makes for a fairly boring sale. Since the last couple vehicles I’ve owned have been private sales, I approached the dealerships somewhat reluctantly.  After shopping around on line, I decided to visit Firestation Auto in Tyler. As the name implies the dealership has been housed in an old fire station for over twenty years. While I have heard their ads on KTBB, and have family members who’ve bought from them in the past, I was still really surprised to find their sales techniques extremely hands off. Owner, operator, salesman, Lance Brown made himself available to answer questions, but otherwise I was free to search the lot looking and sitting in vehicles. After browsing around a little, I asked to test drive a vehicle of interest. The car was a late model, Toyota Corolla. It had low mileage, ran very well, and most importantly, gets about thirty five miles to the gallon. Only when I was ready to buy did Mr. Brown begin the process of checking my credit and putting together a deal.

Lance took all of my financial information into consideration and then worked with the lending institution to hammer out a great payment plan with a really low, fixed interest rate. In the weeks since, I have actually come to enjoy my commute. Looking back at my experience with Firestation , I am still struck by how low pressure, and laid back their sales staff was. Even with my young son exploring their office, the whole attitude, from their side of the deal in particular, was easy, reasonable and relaxed. For those considering a new vehicle, try Firestation Auto first. It’s a different car buying experience.  For more info, check them out on line at http://www.firestationauto.com/homepage.html .

The American Freedom Museum and H.A.M. Museum, A Teachers Perspective

April 25th, 2012

As April rolls into May, teachers and students alike experience a little foretaste of purgatory. The school year is nearly over, but finals haven’t started yet. Classes are covering their last topics of the school year, and the students glaze out the windows daydreaming about the vacation that is only weeks away. As a little tide- you- over till summer getaway, I took my eight graders on a daytrip to a couple of local stops. Both have been well covered here but I thought I’d offer fresh insights. The class is a group from a private school in a neighboring town, and as such, represents a new audience for the establishments in question. Our first stop was the Brook Hill, American Freedom Museum. As always, the exhibits are so much more than one expects to find at a local private school. It chronicles the history of the American military through all the nation’s conflicts. There are rare weapons, flags, even vehicles on display throughout the facility. The hall of presidents contains documents and signatures of every American executive. Anyone planning a visit to our area, hosting out of town guests, or compiling a list of summer activities should definitely keep the museum in mind.

Our second event for the day was a place old and dear to my heart, the Historical Aviation Memorial Museum. But first we sat down for lunch at the Skyline Café adjacent to the museum. We had planned this lunch ahead of time and the young men in particular were eagerly awaiting the huge ten inch hamburgers the restaurant serves. With as much food as our crew ordered, all that cooking took a little while, but it proved well worth the wait.

The Aviation Museum is filled with all manner of artifacts, charts, maps, flags, models and uniforms from all periods and nationalities of aviation history. Outside the building are a number of aircraft on display spanning the period from the Korean War through the skirmishes of the nineteen eighties. I love visiting this place and so does my young son and I have every intention of returning. The one caution I would offer to the group that visits is to be sure that your younger more active members lower their voices and restrain their energy, as some of the older docents (much like my grandfather actually), can be a touch prickly. Hey their vets so I’ll extend that deference. Otherwise this is always a fun stop and I will continue to bring my students until they bar the door.

What To Do For Valentines Day in Tyler Texas?

February 14th, 2012

For guys it is often about the doing, buying, and getting but for the girl all they really want during Valentines Day is time spent just with them. A good long nice conversation without any distractions is the long sought after communication many guys fail to deliver all year long and so for Valentines day maybe take the time to really try and find something meaningful to talk about.

If you are a guy that finds it difficult to come up with things to say when all the pressure of Valentines Day is upon you I recommend going to Toys R Us and picking up a game like “Would You Rather” or many other games like it that offer ice breaker questions that are sure to get you talking and asking questions. Why not bring a few cards with you on your date at the restaurant or venue you plan on going to and simply use them to break the ice through the pressure of Valentines Day.

Before you know it those little cards may just make things good not only for you but for her to as she gets her first long and meaningful conversation with you that she has had in quite some time. Now sometimes relationships have a bit of a role reversal in which the girl is left wondering what to talk about it. In this situation the girl can take this same idea and allow a few cards from an ice breaker board game to get the conversation flowing.

Now you are all probably reading this article for suggestions on actual things to do for Valentines Day in Tyler. Well there are some planned events for today in Tyler and we will list those below but just make sure to include some meaningful coversation because that is really all your date is after. If a little further romantic feelings develop later well you can thank me for helping you. If you are on a first date my suggestion is to keep things low key, friendly, NORMAL, and not too romantic. You see a girl on a first date is not going to want to have too much too soon regarding touchy feely, super personal conversations, and 20 questions grilling. Be normal and funny and if necessary break the ice using the game cards idea if you got nothing.

It’s a little chilly today but if both you are bundled up consider going over to the Rose Garden and experience the Rose Capital of the World up close. Since you live in Tyler might as well make use of the part of our history most closely tied to a day like Valentines.

I would go during lunch, bring a blanket, lunch, and sweets. Spread the blanket out on the grass near the fountain. Feed your significant other grapes, candy, chocolate or something like that and she will likely feel great by all the prioritization and planning that went into making this day special for her.

The Texas state railroad offers a Valentines train ride and dinner but the last day for this was Feb 12th so you really missed out on this idea, too bad! maybe you can do it next year – Texas State Railroad Rusk Texas

Let’s Cook is a business in Tyler next to The Diner and in front of XTC Fitness that offers a date cooking class where you eat and learn to cook all night long. I did this a few months ago and my wife and I had a really fun time. I highly recommend this and at this time they still have 3 spots open for tonights Valentines date night. The chef tonight will be the same chef my wife and I had when we did this and he is a lot of fun. The chef is Al Ippolito and he is Italian, full of culture, fun, and enthusiasm for Italian food. I am sure he will keep you entertained and full of delicious food the entire night.  To see if they have any available spots for tonight call them here: (903) 581-2665. You can visit their website at: http://www.letscooktyler.com/

Date: Feb 14

Time: 6:30-9:30PM

Something special is brewing for Valentine’s Day at Let’s Cook! Al Ippolito will demonstrate the preparation of wonderful Italian-inspired appetizers, salad, main course & dessert, while you observe and learn. Bring your own booze. Click here for the menu

You could send a Conan O’Brien Facebook Platonic friend only Valentines Day card but he sneakily slips in that maybe you should be more than that as the video card continues. Check it out on Facebook, rather humorous if I do say so myself.
A movie at Carmike is always a great idea in my book but be sure to slip in a good convo along the way or your date is likely to feel as if this Valentines Day was just like all the other days you never talk to her.

A dinner at Kiepersol Estates Restaurant and winery or Jakes are two really great places to eat with amazing romantic charm about them and I will say that Dakato’s is alright too but those first two just have a little more pizaz. I like Kiepersol the most and for some reason as great as it is I still pay less money for everything than I do at Jake’s and Dakato’s so just one more reason to go with Kiepersol. Kiepersol offers a great Valentines Day lunch so if you want to beat the crowds give their lunch a try.

Get her candy at the Sweet Gourmet in the shopping center where Einstein Bagles is located.

Get her flowers at Walmart because they look so good and yet are still so cheap or pay a little more in the big tent setup at all local Brookshires.

Have a romantic canoe ride down the neches river in Tyler off of highway 64. You can drive down to the neches river which is accessible from Highway 64. Canoe down to the bridge and back and mayeb bring something to drink and eat such as wine and chocolate. It’s your East Texas gondola ride, similar to Venice but much more accessible and a lot cheaper.

Liberty Hall is showing “An Affair to Remember” tonight at 8 pm. Tickets are still available so go check them out here: More info

Skyvue movie theater is a lot of fun as you get to watch a new movie old timey style outdoors on a big screen. You can tune in the sound on your radio and leave the car running with heat or air conditioner. Tonight at 8:30 they will be showing Journey to the Center of the Earth and Red Tails right after. Maybe pack some chocolate covered strawberries to bring with you and stay for one or two movies.

These are all the Valentines Day ideas I have for this year, I hope this helps in some way.
