Snow Sledding Hills in Tyler Texas

February 4th, 2011

If you are like me and most of my family you are always on the look out for a steep snow sledding hill just in case it happens to snow in Tyler Texas.

Snow is very rare in Tyler Texas and snow that resembles what you see at Breckenridge and Keystone Colorado ski resorts is almost unheard of.

When we do get snow it falls and melts immediately but last night and today we have a thick soft blanket of about 4 – 5 inches of snow.

I have had my eye on this one great hill over at the Walmart Highway 64 parking lot.

If you drive in and look over to your right toward the back there is a very large steep hill.

We climbed up and used a $10 plastic container ironically bought at Walmart last year.

Although our container was not ideal it still worked and was a lot of fun. If you actually had a real sled you could have quite a blast going down this mini ski/snowboard trail.

So for those in Tyler Texas that like to have a little fun in the snow and cold check this hill out sometime while Walmart is still ok with you being on it.

Patent troll reform will effect East Texas

February 1st, 2011

Patent Litigation ReformChange is in the wind and it’s coming via Capitol Hill. The current issue of patent infringement abuse taking place in the court houses of Marshall, Texarkana, and Tyler Texas has Big Brother on its back now.

Facing this issue that is taking place in East Texas might not be on the top of the list of legislation, but it is definitely something that must be taken care of. The main issue is due mostly to the abuse that is taking place.

Although the term “patent troll” has been around for much longer, it has become more of a common phrase in the past 5-6 years. Patent trolls are the culprits responsible for the rise of patent infringement cases due to their excessive use of the court system in order to gain wealth.

Patent trolls are companies who look to push patent infringement to the limit by using any patents that they hold to target any other business that has a product or technology that has any similarity to their patent in order to sue them for damages.

More times than not they actually look to buy patents off of others. The government has taken notice of the abuse and has already submitted one bill to bring reform to patent infringement cases.

The major keys that they have identified is, first, to give the judges more responsibility by reviewing how much damage was done in by the product or technology and the other responsibility is to access how much really due to the company holding the patent.

The second major idea is to limit “forum shopping” that is, to limit cases being held in locations favorable to plaintiffs. So far no bills have been passed yet.

Whatever your perspective is about big government or little government, the abuse of the legal system has gotten them involved and that is just the beginning.

Living Alternatives

January 31st, 2011

In 1982 Beverly Kline wanted to help out a young girl who struggled with an unplanned pregnancy. She found that the only place that offered free pregnancy tests was an abortion clinic, which counseled girls to have an abortion. She saw the need that there needed to be a place that encouraged girls to give their unborn baby life, and offered free pregnancy test. She started to help girls out of her small apartment. Later Bev, along with five staff members opened the Crisis Pregnancy Center. A year later they opened a home for pregnant women with no support. Since then the Living Alternatives has blossomed and has touched thousands of life through their many programs.

Pregnancy can be a scary thing, whether you are single, married, young, old, healthy, or unhealthy. The thing that makes the experience easier and a lot less stressful is the support of family and the people around you. Sadly, many young girls become pregnant and have not support system. Living Alternatives offers these young girls encouragement, counseling, and even an education. Living Alternatives has four main branches around East Texas. Father Heart is a home for young pregnant girls to go live during their pregnancy. Here each girl will live a structured life style under the leadership and encouragement of the staff. This structure includes counseling, healthy diets, and exercise, and if the girls are willing they can finish up their high school education here. The large house gives the girls the luxury of their own space. They are allowed to have guests visit and allowed to leave the house, but each you lady is expected to respect the other girls, the staff, and the rules of the facilities. Father Heart has staff that takes girls to doctor visits and whatever else they need. This is a great place for young girls to come and be encouraged during this life changing time, whether they are giving the baby up for adoption or if they are planning on raising their baby.

Another great branch of Living Alternatives is the Pregnancy Resource Center. The Pregnancy Resource center is located by the Tyler Junior College main campus. The center offers all girls free pregnancy tests and free sonograms. The extremely polite staff keeps everything confidential. When you walk into the center you will have a couple papers to fill out, this is only for their fills and will in no way be used against you. They want to know about your support system, and want to be an encouragement towards young women. Young women will have a private pregnancy test, and the staff will have a few minutes to counsel and encourage these girls. If the test is positive, the center will offer schedule each girl for a free sonogram. The pregnancy center will help girls find doctors and offers a proof of pregnancy (which is needed for pregnancy Medicaid).

Building Blocks offers young moms all different types of assistance. Many people have donated a ton of stuff to Building Blocks for children and mothers. These donated toys, furniture, clothing, and much more are for families in need. Building blocks also offers encouragement to new moms. There are many women that understand the strain and stress of raising children, and they are there to offer a hand of encouragement, and an ear to listen to the things mothers are stressed with. If you have a huge box full of baby clothes and just want to get rid of the box that is just collecting dust and taking up room, you can donate it to the building box program. The building is located next door to the Pregnancy Resource Center (near TJC).

Sometimes young women are not prepared to raise a child and have to make a purely selfless decision of giving the baby up for adoption. Many women’s biggest fear of placing their baby up for adoption is a misunderstanding that once they place the baby for adoption they will have no idea where the baby is or if the baby is taken care of. Loving Alternatives is an adoption agency that is sensitive to the birth mother. The birth mother can meet and get to know the family that will be raising the child that they are giving birth to. They can even get letters and pictures of the child, through the adoption agency, as he or she grows up. This is an encouragement to the birth mom that shows that the baby is loved and is in a good home.

Father Heart, The Pregnancy Resource Center, Building Blocks, and Loving Alternatives all work together to help young women make the best decision for mommy and baby. The staff at each facility will bring encouragement to the decision that women will carry this baby and choose life for their unborn child.

Medicaid Drug Tests?

January 31st, 2011

To no one’s surprise, a new rumor started on Facebook. It did not take long for the status that read “Kentucky just passed a great law. To be eligible for food stamps, Medicaid, or cash assistance for your children or yourself, you have to pass a DRUG test. Now every other state should do the same! If you agree re-post.” to flood my Facebook home page. After I did some investigation (mainly just looked at snopes.com) I found that no such law had passed, but this law has been proposed to the Kentucky state legislature’s House of Representatives. The proposed bill states that once a year anyone who is eligible and applies for government living assistance will have a drug test once a year. After I read about this bill I wondered why this has not passed and why the state of Texas has not thought of this.

I think that Medicaid is a great thing. I am not on insurance and there is no way I could pay the bills if something happened to me or my children. I have been on pregnancy Medicaid with two of my pregnancies. When you are on Medicaid you are asked if you have or do use illegal drugs, and you talk to a social worker, but they just mark down what you say without testing you. The drug test would be helpful in this situation, not only as reliable source of the situation that this child will be brought into, but also this can show doctors the proper treatments to give to these pregnant women.

The purpose of cash assistance is to help people in desperate situations get back on their feet. While on the cash assistant programs they require that each person applies for jobs on a regular basis. Well if they did a drug test before people are accepted for the cash assistance the program would know whether they would even be hired, since most jobs require a drug test.

I think that it would be great if it was true if the rumors were true, and if at least one state would start doing drug tests to be allowed to even apply for government assistance. Many of these government assistance programs work along side of Child Protection Services; you would think that these programs would want to know the situation of the home in more detail than what the parents write on the application. I have nothing against people getting on government assistance and I understand that people run into hard times, but it bothers me that people take advantage of these services. Texas really needs to do something different when it comes to applying for these services and I think a drug test would be a great new law.

Sanctity of Life 2011

January 31st, 2011

Green Acres Baptist Church housed this year’s Sanctity of Life Conference. Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the beauty of life. The Event was put on by C.A.R.E. and Living Alternatives. C.A.R.E. (Christ Centered Abortion Recovery) is a recovery group for women who suffer from the physical and emotional effects of an abortion. Women that have been involved with this support group opened up and talked about their emotional struggles after having an abortion. They opened up about the trails they endured and choices that they made to numb themselves from the memory and emotional emptiness they felt from the abortion. They spoke of their struggles with alcohol, self-image, and even abusive relationships. C.A.R.E. helped these women fill the emptiness that they felt, with the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.

The different branches of Living Alternatives help young women who are pregnant and need support. The Pregnancy Resource Center, which is located by Tyler Junior College, offers free pregnancy test, counseling, and sonograms. Building Blocks offers new single moms with support, counseling, and even free baby stuff that were donated for families in need. Father Heart is a large home that houses many pregnant women and allows them to finish up their high school education if needed. Living Alternatives also has a great adoption program. They find great families that would raise a child in a safe and loving home.

This year’s Sanctity of Life conference was amazing. A young girl took stage and spoke about her testimony. She was only alive by the grace of God. Claire Culwell decided to meet her birth-mother for the first time when she was about 19 years of age. Soon after meeting her, her birth-mother confessed that when she was only thirteen she found out she was pregnant with Claire. Afraid of the future the young girl was advised to have an abortion. She went to a clinic and had the abortion; she thought life would go on as it did before. When she was about six months pregnant she realized that she was still growing as if she was pregnant, so she returned to the clinic to see why she still felt pregnant. They had told her that much to their surprise she was pregnant with twins. They succeeded in aborting one twin, but the other baby was still alive. Because the young girl was too far along in her pregnancy the clinic could not do another abortion, so they sent her out of state. As they prepared her for her second abortion they realized that it would be to dangerous on this young girls body and she was going to have this baby soon. Two weeks later she delivered a three month premature baby girl. Claire was than adopted into a loving family, and lives to tell all about the gift of life and the mercy of the Father.

U.S. Representative, Louie Gohmert, spoke at the program about being Pro-Life and the sad percentages of young women who have had an abortion in the United States. David Dykes, Pastor of Green Acres Baptist Church prayed and shared a word of encouragement, and so did the director of C.A.R.E. ministries. This event was a great encouragement for so many people, and a great time to reflect on the purpose of the gift of life.
