Unions Protest Budget Cuts in Madison WI

February 17th, 2011

Madison WisconsinProtests, signs, angry screams, chants and threats of violence; are continuing today. And no I’m not talking about the mid- east, I’m referring to that workers paradise that is Madison, Wisconsin. I hate protests. I don’t even like protesting for things I support. One never goes home from a demonstration with a sense of accomplishment. I vote so I don’t have to demonstrate. The protesters in Madison are proving the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished. The states and feds have been caving to unions like the National Educators Association (NEA) for so long, that their members now have way overblown senses of entitlement. In the face of a dire financial crises, the Wisconsin voters chose a governor on the basis that he would takes steps to cut the state budget. Various unions (particularly the teachers union) are now objecting to the state’s re-budgeting on the basis that it cuts too deeply into their benefits, even though private sector benefits and pensions are experiencing even greater hits.

While the state of Wisconsin is doing what it can to protect existing jobs, the money to keep all those benefits going out simply doesn’t exist! One union rep spoke nebulously this morning about upper class citizens (who he claimed contribute nothing), paying their fair share. When questioned by the host conducting the interview as to who these tax free wealthy were, he was of course unable to produce any names or numbers. It didn’t stop him from stumbling on with his rant however. Personally I’m sick to death of the same old class warfare. We as a society have got to stop giving into the loud and obnoxious minority that makes demands on the rest of us. The fact is the Wisconsin electorate chose a government that would work to bring the state’s financial house in order. It is a comparatively small group demanding that the wishes of the majority be ignored on the basis of its own sense of entitlement.

I’m sure the Wisconsin demonstrations will not be the last. As the economy continues to suffer, more and more states are going to be forced to reduce costs, this is going to mean jobs and benefits lost. But we cannot allow ourselves to be intimidated by union terrorism. If the question is between whether or not the NEA gets paid or my son eats, guess what… He’s going back for seconds!

Are We Headed for Another Government Shutdown?

February 16th, 2011

What is happening to our government? With each American household owing over a hundred thousand dollars and climbing, the federal executive is refusing to cut the budget in any meaningful way. The only cuts that branch of government are willing to make all, come of course from the one place many Americans can justify spending anything, which is of course the Defense department. They are far more willing to fund pet projects like unnecessary bullet trains, and National Public Broadcasting! Personally I’m far more concerned with my government keeping my family and me safe than with whether or not Big Bird finds its necessary to get a part time job waiting tables to pay for his birdseed habit.

It is nothing short of astounding to me how this government continues to push for more and more spending without a clue as to how we’re going make the interest payments against our debt! As a concerned citizen I find myself on the brink of despair when it comes to the financial state and future of my country. I’m watching the administration either through wanton foolishness or deliberately, (or perhaps a combination of both) driving the national economy into bankruptcy, and there seems to be nothing we can do to stop it! At the same time a certain percentage (hopefully a small one), of the electorate seems to support the increased expenditures. Here’s a clue people! If the private sector cannot afford something, neither can the federal government! It’s all the same money! While the congress seems to be standing tough the lack of a budget is driving the country toward another government shutdown. If that happens the President will blame Republicans with the hope that the American people will hold them responsible for the fact they’ve not received their social security checks. Please America, don’t fall for it! If the shut down comes it’s because we simply can’t afford to carry the water for social programs anymore.

Namaste Bombay Indian Food in Tyler TX

February 15th, 2011

Namaste Bombay Tyler TexasMany people who would classify themselves in the Indian food connoisseur (I apologize for using french) category still don’t even know that there are two Indian restaurants in Tyler.

Namaste Bombay
713 WSW Loop 323, Suite F
903-561-7200
Open Tuesday-Sunday
Lunch buffet: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Dinner menu: 5:15-10 p.m.

My brother has told me that Namaste Bombay was pretty good. I like Indian food as well but the sign threw me off at first because I could barely make out what it said.

Now that I have some recommendations from my brother and overheard an Indian in Bodacious barbecue give a thumbs up on this Tyler Texas Indian restaurant as well as the one at Holiday Inn I will have to try it out.

It takes me awhile to try out a new restaurant as I like to see a new place be completely accepted by the mass public before I will usually become a restaurant patron.

I have heard this Indian restaurant offers buffets at 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  as well as a menu where you can order what you like from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Indian Food Tyler TexasThey mention that they are  a vegan friendly restaurant but this doesn’t mean they don’t serve meat.

I assume they have popular Indian dishes like, chicken curry, yogurt type stuff, and probably a lot of rice related things. Usually an Indian restaurant will have things similar to tortillas but they will be crispy and flaky.

Rather then listen to me write off a bunch of things from their menu you can read it online here. Be prepared for some sweet Indian music while you read – click here to read menu

You also usually get a good selection of spices and sauces at an Indian restaurant. Obviously I don’t know much about this place yet but I do plan to go and check it out and would have gone this Valentines day had I not had the flu.

This restaurant is on your way to Chuck E Cheese pizza and in front of New Covenant church and Kings Academy. If these land marks still don’t help they are also near Chili’s Bar and Grill and on the same side of the highway as Chili’s.

Look for the white sign that has something written in a weird font that you probably won’t be able to read even with good eye site.

I think all in all I will probably really like this restaurant and have been wanting to go ever since I heard about it but the flu has been holding me back.

On the owners website he seems to have a passion for this new restaurant and I hope it does well because every town needs a couple of Indian restaurants and I like Indian food, it’s just good stuff to put in your mouth.

A Wish List of New Businesses and Activities in Tyler TX

February 10th, 2011

We’ve spent a lot of time and words here at Tyler TX Directory, discussing old and new businesses and cultural goings on, and giving them our thumbs up and or thumbs down. We’ve covered a lot of territory sometime in triplicate and occasionally disagreeing even amongst ourselves. For instance one of our writers once wrote a positive review of Cici’s Pizza, and I on the other hand expressed a preference for Totino’s frozen pizza over that particular establishment. Point being we’ve offered sometimes numerous opinions on a lot of Tyler area businesses. This got me to thinking, what new type of business / activities do we need here? What are the missing pieces in our socio- economic and cultural lives that would make our community more complete? I think we can eliminate Banks, Churches, Schools and Mexicans restaurants right from the start. So here is my personal wish list of new businesses and things to do in Tyler. These are not in any way scientific, and based simply on conversations and personal preferences.

A new water company: If you’ve visited this site before you may know that I’ve written quite critically about Southern Utilities (SU) in the past. I’d say this company has terrible customer service but that would imply they do have it. SU has been able to operate as a completely unapproachable entity, due to a complete lack of area competition. Not to mention their prices are quite high. Customers immediately outside the Tyler city limits simply have no other options. I have no idea how the infrastructure for water supply works but the Tyler area is certainly ripe pickings for any new water utility company. Big- city delivery Chinese food: One thing I really miss about living in a big city is the ability to have nearly any type of food delivered to my front door. To my knowledge the closest thing we have to delivery Chinese food is Peaking, which is a terrific restaurant, but their delivery area doesn’t cover the entire city of Tyler, at any rate they don’t deliver to west, south west side of town. Fewer buffets and more local take- out and delivery would be great for our area I think.

An authentic Indian food restaurant: Far be it from me to suggest another eatery for this town but so long as it’s not another faceless corporate franchise that we have “got to have,” personally I’m open to greater variety. Indian food would be a great new addition to our restaurant repertoire. While I love Pizza and good mom and pop Mexican food, Indian would add a little spice to our culinary lives. As someone who really digs Indian food I would certainly be a regular.

An Imax movie theater:It seems to take about five to ten years or so for the biggest bad-est movie theater in Tyler to get over run by troubled youth and rowdy teens who turn the parking lot into a meeting place for area police. When that happens a newer safer theater is opened and the process begins all over again. So why not try establishing a more upscale theater, that appealed to a greater cross section of people by carrying both entertaining and educational films, in high def of course, a little farther from the city proper, say perhaps off I- 20 somewhere? Area schools would really benefit and it would add a bit more culture to our area.

Minor league Baseball:We’ve tried this twice, and as I understand it, the sticking point has been the same both times. It seems certain groups with certain religious affiliations objected to beer sales at the ball park. The first time around, the team had some real success and brought in good crowds. But when the fun police caught wind of the fact that beer could be purchased (during the 1997 season), protests ensued. Another attempt was made a few years later but baseball in a dry county didn’t equal as much fun or money and the team folded after a single season. Look I’m a practicing Christian but I’m not concerned that the moral health of my community is going to go into a nose dive if folks have a cold beer at a hot summer ball game. But some people seem to have this paranoid mental image of a drunken orgy erupting after hours of binge drinking, and that’s just not reality. I don’t know too many people who go to the ball park with the intention getting hammered, it’s too expensive. The ball park in Arlington sells beer and it’s arguably one of the most family friendly venues in all of sports. There are leagues that have Tyler in mind if we can just work out this one issue. It would certainly be a great draw for our community. Can we all please observe the maxim “all things in moderation,” and just let people be grown- ups?

So there’s my wish list. It was actually a harder list to compile than I expected it would be. I guess if we sit and think about it, there’s not too much that our area lacks. At the end of the day I’d say we’re blessed to live in a city that has a lot to offer and a lot to do. That’s not to say we can’t improve but we’re doing pretty well.

Congress Plans Vote to Starve Obama Care of Funds

February 10th, 2011

The Republican House is once again on a collision course with the other half of the legislature and with the executive. The plan is to vote to restrict funds from the new Obama care program sometime next week. Frustrated Dems are again ridiculing the vote as another measure that will go nowhere given the fact that they control the senate. But the Republicans are simply demonstrating their seriousness both about undoing the new health care legislation and about reducing overall spending. This week they released a plan to deeply cut expenditures to a whole slew of government programs, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Amtrak, the IRS, (seriously, who won’t support that?!) and numerous other big government favs.

So even though the move to defund the President’s pet law will probably not go very far it does serve a highly useful purpose. It reminds the American people where their senators and congressmen or women stand on the issue. Despite the promises of the ineffectual Harry Reid, the repeal did in fact make it to the senate floor where members where forced once again to put their names to controversial and unpopular legislation. I hope the electorate was watching. Now the landscape has changed slightly however. With the federal judiciary ruling Obama care unconstitutional it’s almost certain to eventually find its way to the supremes. Congresses vote next week would potentially put the Senate back on the hot seat, particularly if the nation’s highest court eventually up holds the federal court’s ruling and throws out the new law. Any votes against defunding national health insurance would be in effect votes for sustaining unconstitutional government.

Again, it’s imperative that the American people follow the money, and the votes on this thing! I realize many of us are cynical about our nation’s leadership, but that’s all the more reason. Big changes are afoot here and for once we have a group of people in congress doing what they said they were going to do! The American voters are smart people, smarter than they are often given credit for. Just don’t go back to sleep. We have a lot to learn in the next few months and perhaps more to teach.
