I was shocked and amazed to awaken this morning on Planet Earth! I fully expected to be “raptured” sometime after midnight! I mean, I had it on good authority that my salvation was absolutely assured! What could have happened? Well a Christian apocalyptic group using the website http://www.familyradio.com has been predicting the rapture, and subsequent end of the world beginning today May 21st, 2011. Their webpage is unequivocal about the date. How did they arrive at it? Well let’s see if I can explain it… “By careful study of the Bible we learn that in the year 4990 B.C. God brought a flood of water and destroyed the entire earth except for eight people and the animals that were with them.” Wait how exactly did we arrive at this date? Well, careful study of course! I for one am now convinced! The author then falls back on an old theological parlor trick. He cites the oft maligned verse “to God a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as a day…” which, as my brother vehemently points out, is a metaphor for the mercy of God and actually has nothing whatever to do with time. The misinterpretation is very useful to end-timers however, who turn and point out that creation took six days, and on the seventh day God rested, meaning of course that creation, and his work, was complete. Anyway, if you take the rock hard unquestionable date of the flood, 4990 BC, add the current date 2011, subtract a year for the year zero, (evidently God was fine with the random subtraction of an entire year), and abracadabra! 7,000 years!
Ok, so I realize I may be oversimplifying a bit, but honestly, not much. I should also add that the pastor behind these claims has made them before. He also stated in 1994 that the end had come. Come to find out, it hadn’t! He later corrected his mistake by explaining it was just the end of the age of the church. All our pastors and priests have been under satanic direction since 94. Who knew?! But wait.. isn’t he ah… a Pastor? I’m confused. Well its only late morning after all, so Rapture Day is still young. A friend offered me the encouragement that we actually have until 6:00 this afternoon so… of course she was still here too, so I’m not real sure what to do with that. Oh well Jesus can come back whenever he wants as far as I’m concerned. I think I’ll go ahead with my evening plans. If I suddenly find the scenery changing, so be it. That should be fun too!

After the weekend’s vote in favor of the new jail bond proposal, I must admit that I’m still unsure what to think. Local politics has certainly made some strange bedfellows. Much to my surprise, many people I know and respect in our area have come out in support of the modest tax increase in order to finally put the prison issue to rest. The new prison will cost thirty- five million, but proponents say that some of those costs can be made up by housing state and federal prisoners from outside our area.
Even Tyler’s budget hawks have been divided on the issue. The “Grassroots America” organization supported the measure, while the Tyler Tea Party opposed it. Personally I certainly recognize the need to ease prison overcrowding, but as a Tylerite, I can’t help but feel somewhat duped. Every time the city has pushed for some new bond or other, citizens have said “no we can’t afford it!” whether it was school bonds or the continually re-emerging issue of a new jail. Well, in the latter case persistence has finally paid off. I wish I could say that I trusted our local bureaucrats to take the most frugal approach with our money, but sorry to say, I just don’t.
At the end of the day the passing of the jail bond may not be entirely bad news. Certainly building the new jail will have positive implications, namely local jobs and fresh outside funds. But I’m concerned that every other local committee is going to employ the same kind of grind us down, tactics the pro-jail people used. My advice is this; keep your hand on your wallet folks! There are always going to be things we need to buy or build. But let’s prioritize. There’s nothing wrong with making do with less, now and again!

King Solomon said that there is nothing new under the sun. His maxim is certainly true when it comes to philosophies of education. There is a popular perception in that industry that we must be constantly growing, constantly demonstrating an openness to “new ideas” and approaches. Well, there are no new ideas. Call me boring and closed minded, but in my opinion this is largely a marketing tactic that schools adopt in order to appeal to parents and make their literature more appealing. “Oh yes our teachers are required to take this class and that class, because we’re always learning…” Ok, this is essentially true. I’m not so arrogant to think I know everything. But nor am I a babe in the woods. I do know some things… like how to do my job effectively. As a teacher I’m fully willing to consider potentially new approaches, but don’t ask me to rethink my entire philosophy and methodology of education because someone has discovered a great “new” method I’ve just got to look into. I’m too old for that.
One old idea I’ve been hearing about a lot again recently is the Montessori approach. Throughout my teacher training it was drilled into me that the method was deeply flawed. But when a friend who had received a very positive report asked my opinion I found myself surprised at my own lack of knowledge, so I felt compelled to briefly revisit the topic.
The approach took shape in the early 1900s. It was based on the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori stressed using the student’s natural impulses and cultivating and directing them in a positive direction for the purposes education. Among the impulses she identified were attributes like;self-preservation, environment orientation, order, exploration, communication, etc. Students are encouraged to learn and “study” what most stimulates their senses and drives their interest. The classroom is largely student-centric. Children are encouraged to interact with, and experience the subject on multiple sensory levels.
Now I can appreciate the idea of learning through hands on experience, (though not all experiences are positive. Some are better learned about in the abstract). But what about developing critical reasoning? Certainly some students with naturally inquisitive minds would do well in this model. But like my sister in law who prospered in an A.C.E. school, some students will find the best in any environment. I was not one of these however. I would have either laid on my back staring at the ceiling, or chased the other students around with a sharp stick. Based on my limited understanding of the approach it seems too focused on the tactile and less concerned with the abstract.
I’m open to the possibility that I’m either misinterpreting the method or that I’m missing some important aspect of the methodology which would force me to reconsider my position, but here’s my central reservation about Montessori education: Students are more than physical organisms to be massaged and stimulated. They have minds that need direction, discipline and inspiration. Humanity possesses a spiritual nature which requires more than external stimuli. Call me idealistic and old fashion, but isn’t education at least partially about teaching students how to perceive what’s true? Montessori education may be appropriate for some students. But as for me I think I’ll stick to a traditional teacher / subject driven classroom. But that’s just me…

Hard as it is to believe, it’s nearly time for the Tyler Area Parade of Homes to start again. It seems like only a couple of weeks ago that I was writing about this same event, but believe it or not, our area is gearing up once again for the annual tour. It started in 1953 as a way for local builders to demonstrate their craft for local potential clients. At the time the tour contained only ten homes and a handful of builders. Since then it has grown to include more than fifty homes and now includes both contractors and subcontractors.
So who exactly attends this event every year? All of East Texas actually. It’s not just folks in construction or real-estate who enjoy touring the area homes. It’s anyone looking for any kind of design or decorating ideas. It’s also attended by folks like my dad who watch home improvement and design shows religiously. The fact that our housing market is so depressed may actually bring out more house tourists as well. While I certainly can’t afford to own a new luxury home perhaps I can live vicariously through those who can. Evidently this year’s route has route has yet to be announced, but word should be out by the time tickets go on sale May thirty first.
Each year a portion of the proceeds go to a local charity or two. This year’s charities are the Path Children’s Programs and Azleway Boy’s Ranch. The Parade of Homes runs from June 4th to the 12th. The Daily schedule looks like this: Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. For more information and history on the Tyler Area Builders Association, Parade of Homes, visit the following website: http://www.tylerareabuilders.com/whats-happening/parade-of-homes.html

I went for my once a year bowling trip this past weekend, at Green Acres Bowl, and no it has nothing to do with Tyler’s mega church of the same name. (Does that sound like a slight; because it wasn’t intended to as one. It’s just that the church is huge, and it’s easy to assume that any business with “Green Acres” in the name is somehow connected to it. For some reason however, drawing attention to a churches size, large or small, can be a touchy prospect. Too large and people think you’re a social club, too small and you’re a cult). Sorry, again I digress. While reading on the bowling alley I discovered there are about as many opinions on it, as there are of its Baptist namesake.
First off let me say that the staff was really helpful, a bit overly protective I guess, but really very nice, and they generally took care of all our needs. Now I’m not a good bowler… at all. But I had good time nonetheless. My son was back and forth dropping his ball and retrieving another almost before the first one reached the pins. And it was like that all morning. Suffice it to say, he had a terrific time. The business has changed an awful lot over the years. I read some reviews that must have been written about the time former Vice President Gore was first establishing the internet, because the Green Acres bowling alley hasn’t looked like they described it in over twenty years!
On the plus side, the establishment is neat and clean and relatively inexpensive. It’s also a great place to take the fam, particularly when the weathers bad. If there’s a down side, it’s that there’s no bar or place to purchase food or drinks. But the facility’s not equipped for those added services, and I realize that’s exactly what many Tylerites like most about the place anyway. Our city has a strangely paradoxical and frankly, inconsistent view on the use of adult beverages, even if that use is moderate. Instead, maybe pull into Braum’s, for Ice cream and a cherry lime-aid prior to heading over to bowl a few frames. At any rate, if you’ve not been to Green Acres Bowl in a while, I recommend checking it out, particularly as summer starts to heats up. It’s cheap fun in a cool, family friendly, environment.
