Texas Job Growth Leads the Nation

June 3rd, 2011

I read a report yesterday or the day before, confirming what most of us living in Texas strongly suspected. Our state is well ahead of the curve in terms of job growth. The cities of Dallas and Ft.Worth rank above the rest of the nation in terms of job growth. Houston is a close second. The jobless rate in the metroplex is down slightly from eight percent to roughly seven and a half, admittedly a small decline, but a good one considering the national average is nine percent. There are a number of ways to crunch the numbers, obviously, but in terms of both population and job growth Texas is definitely better off than most of our sister states; far better off than some. I’m not suggesting that times are exactly good here, just better.

The category of growth I found most interesting, both for me personally and for Tyler, comes in the area of Education and Health Care. These two fields seem to be growing albeit slowly, with an interesting stipulation: it includes private as opposed to public schools. The article I read cites 6.4 percent growth in the Ft. Worth area, and 5.2 in the Dallas area. While these numbers relate specifically to the metroplex, this category is of course the largest field of employment in East Texas. With the public schools in Texas experience big cutbacks, private schools are growing, and hiring new staff. While its admittedly anecdotal evidence, I can attest to this, as I recently accepted a position at a new private school in our area.

I think the relative health of the Texas economy comes as a result of a generally pro-business administration, and a lack of state income tax, which encourages immigration from states like California (and others), that are incredibly overburdened by regulation and taxation. Incidentally, the Bureau of Labor put San Francisco near the bottom of the job growth list with -0.3 percent growth when compared to last year.

Municipal Surcharge Bureau and the Driver Responsibility Program in Texas

June 3rd, 2011

Ever hear of MSB “A Private Corporation?” Well neither had I, until walking to my mail box this morning. MSB stands for Municipal Surcharge Bureau. MSB is basically a group of outsourced bureaucrats working as collection agents for the Department of Public Safety, and the State of Texas. As best as I can determine, they are currently responsible for the collection of ticket surcharges on infractions such as, driving with an expired license or without a license, driving without insurance, or driving under the influence (DUI). One to three of these infractions entitle the state charge the “Offender” with a surcharge every three years. And by the way, this “Private Corporation” has aspirations far beyond its current collections role. Their website claims the following as their vision: “[To Become the] Receivables Management Solutions for Every Government in: every city, every county, every state.” Reading about these cats makes me reflect on Douglas Adams description of the Vogons in his classic work “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!” “Vogons are described as mindlessly bureaucratic, aggressive, having as much sex appeal as a road accident… They are one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy – not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous.” I trust my reader perceives my hostility at this point.

As you may have guessed I recentlyreceived a ticket for driving on an expired license. I wrote about my experience in an article for this site several months ago. http://www.tylertxdirectory.com/8936/getting-pulled-over-in-tyler-texas-again/ First off, I was charged more by the city than I was led to believe I would be by the officer who gave me the ticket. Ok fine I’ll just pay the ticket and be done with it. When I had paid up all my charges, and gotten everything current, I was enormously relieved. One less thing to worry about right? Wrong! A walk to my mail box today dispelled my happy delusion. Turns out, now that I had paid the city, the state wants its kick- back. At first I wasn’t even sure it wasn’t a scam. Well it is a scam but… Upon talking to others who had already encountered this organization, I heard stories of people being fined without their knowledge, ever growing penalties as a result of inadequate notification, and even warrants issued for the arrest of citizens who believed they had paid their tickets!

The Driver Responsibility Program, (sounds nice huh), was put into law in 2003. But the whole “Surcharge” nonsense is just another shameless project to squeeze more revenue out of the citizenry! And what’s worse the rules are so unclear, as to make it a sliding scale. No one really understands the fees, so who can tell if they’re being over charged? So what do we do? I don’t know. I guess we can start by calling our congressman, and trying to make the issue visible enough to find someone willing to vote for repeal. The hard thing is to find a politician willing to divest his office of funds, especially if he or she can collect them in the name of “Driver Responsibility.” I guess for now, I’m out another one hundred four dollars. Enjoy it DPS, but you’d better use it to put gas in an officer’s car or something. God knows that’s where it was going before I sent it to you!

Members of the Mineola Sex Ring Released from Jail

June 2nd, 2011

Mineola sex ring released from jailThere really is no justice, even in East Texas. I’m referring of course to the guilty plea that allowed the rest of the Mineola pedophiles to be released on the grounds of time served. Excuse me but, there isn’t enough time! The report I read stated that judge Skeen and the prosecution didn’t have the heart to put the child victims through another round of excruciating testimony. This is a compelling argument to me. I can’t imagine having sit through the account myself, let alone live through it! What really sticks in my craw is that these worthless defendants are actually profiting by their horrific actions by holding the threat of telling their story over the heads of the children and their families, thereby abusing them all over again! I was not one of the Tylerites upset when the court brought rather severe sentences for the church arsonists last year. But it seems now that they were condemned by their defense’s inability to black mail the victims and their families with the threat of making them repeatedly relive their crimes. As I say, I understand the judge’s reasoning in this case, but it doesn’t make the result any easier to take.

The sickies who were released this past week, each pled guilty to third degree felony injury to a child in exchange for time served. The most recent releases were of Jamie Pittman, Patrick Kelly, and Rebecca Pittman on Friday, May 27th. As I understand it Shauntel Mayo and Jimmy Sones remain in Jail and Sheila Sones was released the day before the others. Only Dennis Pittman is serving time for his conviction, but of course he has appealed his decision. Check out the mug shots and remember the faces parents, once a pedophile always a pedophile. For their sakes, I certainly hope these defendants remain friends, because they’re not going to find any new ones in Tyler or East Texas.

XTC Fitness and Sports in Tyler Texas Fast Weight Loss System

June 1st, 2011

Tyler TX GymsAre you a guy that sits behind a desk all day working for yourself and yet you do nothing to stay healthy or lose weight?

You are not alone as I myself have enjoyed the practice of eating what I want when I want with little regard for my growing belly and future heart problems.

I am a thirty something male who works for myself and has little self discipline when it comes to working out and learning new things.

What usually gets me off my seat is some type of dramatic life changing event but sometimes I simply choose to do something different for a change.

Tyler TX Gyms

You may take pride in the fact that you could lose weight by yourself if you wanted to but forget about that for now and look at the benefits of having a personal fitness coach.

At XTC Fitness and Sports in Tyler Texas you have multiple classes like kickboxing, and yoga that come free with your gym membership. Your personal coach walks you through the entire 45 minute to hour long class.

The noon class is only 45 minutes and allows you to skip out during lunch and do a hard core 45 minute work out routine that keeps your heart pumping the entire time while building muscle and learning how to fight.

The kickboxing class is no wimpy class and is made for guys or gals. Tony Cruz has been a very successful personal trainer for years and now has his own Tyler Texas gym.

The Tyler Texas gyms you see in town now are not equipped to the extent that XTC Fitness will soon be. XTC is currently converting the old Skateplex behind The Diner into a huge Tyler Texas gym the likes you have yet to see in East Texas.

Tony has spared no expense and has paid attention to offer every possible option for his Tyler TX gym that you could imagine from spin classes, indoor track, Yoga, Zumba, child care, kids tutoring, rock climbing wall, bleacher running platform, to a very impressive free weights layout.

New Tyler TX Fitness Facility

Considering with your membership you have access to a host of free fitness programs that have your very own coach to lead you through the quick efficient training you will feel better and more fit than you likely have since highschool.

XTC Fitness in Tyler TX offers you the exact system for your weight loss goals with affordable membership programs, the exercise systems you like in place, free personal training with each class, and a schedule to fit almost anybody’s time crunch.

Because Tony’s gym is in a very accessible easy to get to location in Tyler you can jet out from your workplace at noon, workout with the kickboxing class for 45 minutes, shower, and head back in to work.

Rather than eating a big burrito at Chuy’s, why not eat an already prepared sandwich, drive over to XTC Fitness and lose some weight. It is really as simple as that.

You just show up and Tony’s crew will handle it all from there. Within just a few short months and definitely within a year you will see some crazy fast results.

It is not just me that is getting into this kickboxing thing, I have met a 42 year old man in my class that does it with me, and stays afterwards to work out even longer. There are women in the class anywhere from 45 – 22 and they all do the real push ups and not the ones where you get down on your knees.

I am telling you many of these women never thought they would even be able to do one real push up and here they are doing 10 at a time what some call “man push-ups”

XTC right now has some pretty awesome deals so go by and talk to Jeremy and see what he can hook you up with and don’t forget to tell him you heard about their place on here.

As a bonus for joining early you will get access to their grand opening launch and party that is going to really knock the doors off the place.

They are only letting a select few in for their launch party on June 24th so go by now to join so you can get on the list.

As my own personal guarantee, if you join XTC fitness and lose no weight from their fitness system and give up I will buy you a Marble Slab ice cream on me, I will then take you back to XTC on a day of your choice and help you burn it off.

Now is the time to join a proven fitness system and stop getting confused and mixed up with all the Tyler TX gyms and sports centers that advertise out there. This is the real deal and has proven to many that weight really can shed off quicker than a striped lizard on hot asphalt.

As a warning, don’t put this off if you are 30 something and like me sitting behind a desk never doing something to keep that heart moving, and losing those pounds as it will catch up to you quickly. You know how the time is flying by now that your in your 30’s and it isn’t about to slow down and in fact will start moving even faster.

As a reminder XTC Fitness has some really sweet deals right now so be sure to come on in and check out what they are. Ask for Jeremy and he will give you the grand tour.

ETCA’s Jim Patillo Memorial Golf Tournament

May 31st, 2011

East Texas Christian AcademyI often write about events happening at area private schools, particularly when those schools are trying to raise funds. One school that I’ve not written a whole lot about, due largely to the fact that I really have no close ties to it; is East Texas Christian Academy (ETCA). Given however that I am a proponent of Private Christian Education, I thought I would give them a plug. As readers may or may not be aware, ETCA is experiencing quite a bit of growth. They just completed a new facility, and are now working on raising funds to grow their athletic department. Private schools in general, are likely to continue to grow in the face of cut backs in the public schools, especially in Tyler where the education market has been somewhat flooded in recent years. And with private athletics offering more opportunities every year, parents and families are likely to take an even greater interest in non-government schools.

On Monday, June 20th, ETCA will be holding the Jim Pattillo Memorial Golf Tournament, to raise money for its own athletic department. It will be held at Holly Tree Country Club and begins at 8:30 am. Fees include essentially green fees, cart and lunch. They run one hundred twenty five dollars for a single participant, and five hundred per team. The deadline to participate is June 10th. To register for the Jim Pattillo Memorial, call Aubrey Ballard at (903) 561-8642. For more information on the event and or the school, visit their web site at http://www.etca.org .
