Well, as impossible as it seems we’re little over half way through the summer of 2011 already. And with as hot as it’s been I’m looking forward to the fall. One of the great fall events is the UT Tyler Cowan Center‘s Distinguished Lecture Series. I’m not a season ticket holder or anything but I have managed to attend quite a few events there over the years. I always look forward to the release of the list of fall participants. Well the season’s up- coming speakers are great. I hope to attend both events. The first speaker is former senator Fred Thompson, and he will appear on September 13th. The Next is writer and satirist P. J. O’Rourke and he will be speaking on January 19th.
Fred Thompson has had a unique and diverse career. He’s been an actor with many roles to his credit, most notably, that of Law and Order’s “Arthur Branch.” His Political Career consisted of two terms in the United States Senate, which included several significant committee appointments. In 2008 the former senator jumped into the Republican presidential primary race amid much early excitement. Once in the race however, the campaign failed to maintain the energy that launched it. Since his unsuccessful run for the presidential nomination, Thompson has hosted his own talk radio program and has hit the lecture circuit. With his frank southern charm, the senator has made a name for himself as a straight shooter who doesn’t shy away from discussing tough political topics. The evening’s appearance will begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets go on sale in August.
Patrick Jake O’Rourke is a prolific writer and journalist, known for his searing wit. He’s written for a host of magazines and news papers including: Rolling Stone, the Atlantic Monthly, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, and on and on. He is a self proclaimed libertarian, whose topics generally center on government and culture. He’s an economic conservative, with moderate to (more) liberal views on social issues. He’s written more than sixteen books including best sellers like “Parliament of Whores,” and “Give War a Chance.” His most recent book is entitled, “Don’t Vote, It Just Encourages the Bastards.”O’Rourke is an enormously entertaining writer who’s given us some of the funniest and most memorable one- liners of the last thirty years or so. His sure to be memorable lecture, will be on Thursday of January the 19th, beginning at 7:30 pm. As with Senator Thompson’s appearance, tickets for Cowan Center members start in August. General public can begin purchasing them in November. For more information on these or other events, visit the Cowan Center website at http://www.uttyler.edu/cowan/# .
Tyler has always been in a dry county, sending people miles away on a drive to the county line for any alcoholic needs. However Keipersol Estates has created an exceptional location in Tyler Texas through the KE Cellar located in the French Quarter. KE Cellars is truly unique because of it’s ability to sell wine within Tyler, it has been said that the local status of the winery has brought them favor with Tyler’s legal permission. Tyler has thoroughly opposed such controversial ventures in the past, yet perhaps the equestrian nature of a business is what’s important rather than the simple matter of alcohol. With an extravagant European feel, KE Cellars has created an atmosphere synonymous with an East Texas wine connoisseurs fantasy of rustic class and sophisticated intoxication.

Stepping into a strip mall store has never felt so much akin to a ranch wine cellar. The staff are extremely dutiful to the attendance of their customers offering information on any wine, upholding the level of professionalism assumed of a wine cellar even down to their formal uniforms. KE Cellars is much more than a cellar, with nightly music showcases, a giftshop and a wine processing area in the building this local wine cellar does much more than sell wine. KE Cellars doesn’t have to be only a wine shop, the Grande Cellar in the back of KE Cellars is open for anybody to enjoy a bottle of wine with friends, alone with some work or even for your next business meeting it makes a relaxing location for any day at any time.
Appropriately decorated with surrounding barrels of aging wine there’s a wi-fi connection as well as live music from six to nine in the Grande Cellar. KE Cellars can even mail you your wine to you if you aren’t able to come to the boutique yourself. Not only do they carry wines from the Keipersol Estates, in fact they have an enormous variety of wines from wineries across Texas and on a gratuitous note keep in mind that KE Cellars will give you a free wine tasting if you bring ten of their bags back to the store.
Kiepersol Estates own wine can range from light to quite intense. The 2010 Kiepersol Estates Moscato is a light selection of the Keipersol collection, described as a pale straw sweet wine it also has a palate immersed in the sweet tropical flavor of lychee and peach with a subtle finish of honeydew to delicately accompany the fruitiness, this moscato won the bronze in the 2011 San Antonio News Express Wine Competition. But if a more intense wine is your pleasure than perhaps you should try the Kiepersol Estates numerous award winning 2007 Cabernet including a gold in the 2010 American Wine Society Commercial Competition. With flavors of caramel, chocolate and black currant at first the wine transitions with black pepper and structured tannins coming through as well as hints of coffee and black fruit for a strong vibrant finish to this highly acclaimed selection.

Chandler is located on State Highway 31 just 8 miles west of Tyler, Texas. Should you choose to make a weekend of your visit to the LAB, there is plenty to do in the area. Tyler offers many places to stay, visit and eat while you are in East Texas. The natural beauty and slower pace also make a great place to just sit and write for a while.
There are quite a number of Independence Day festivities in the Tyler, East Texas area this year. Of course there will be the traditional fireworks display at Lindsey Field. In fact from what I read, quite a big crowd is anticipated this year. Throughout the day, there will be an assortment of activities and local charities and organizations will be sponsoring events. The cost is ten dollars per car load.
Living Alternatives in Lindale will also be holding its annual fireworks display again this year. This is a great day that’s really much more than just a fireworks show. There are all sorts of events and activities for the kids, including swimming, bounce houses, music and a variety of food vendors on hand. There is also a fishing tournament throughout the day. This is definitely one of my preferred Fourth of July events. Admission is free however a fifteen dollar donation is suggested. For more info see the following page: http://la4th.com/ .
For those looking for activities throughout the holiday weekend there are a couple of very cool educational things I thought I’d plug. The Historic Aviation Memorial Museum (HAMM) will be holding a static air show display on Saturday, the second of July, the day before the Thunder over Cedar Creek Air Show. The museum holds this event every year as the pilots fly in to perform the following day. HAMM has made arraignments for their historic aircraft to be on display to the public. There is a moderate fee to get up close and personal with the aircraft, (I believe it was five dollars last year), but viewing from the fence line is obviously free. To see my review of last year’s static air show, click on the following link: http://www.tylertxdirectory.com/3027/celebrating-the-4th-in-tyler-tx/ .
For Tylerites interested in going to an actual air show this year the “Wings Over Tyler Air Show,” will be on Sunday the third. Also at the HAMM terminal (the old Pounds field location for native East Texans), this event seems like kind of a long time coming for our area. It will feature a variety of performances and aircraft, and promises to bring out a lot of visitors. The entrance fee is twenty five dollars a car load, or five dollars per person. For more info on this event visit the following web sites: http://www.tylertxdirectory.com/9031/live-from-the-field-2/ ,http://www.wingsovertylerairshow.com/ .There are certainly other great celebrations in our area this year and a quick Google search will yield more results. But these are some of my personal favorites, and the ones in which I choose to participate. Happy Independence Day East Texas! And don’t forget to enjoy the grill this weekend!

The niches within the elder care industry are independent living, memory care, heart dialisys care, and several care levels in between.
A new trend in assisted and independent living that allows residence an extended stay is to hire outside help for helping your loved one keep track and take their medication.
