Exercise in your Happy Zone

September 19th, 2011

Hopefully your doing some type of daily exercise already but for most of us we aren’t and so I am here to get you going on something small but good.

I recommend you have a goal of twenty minutes of exercise or movement of some kind a day. You can even break up this into two 10 minute intervals.

These small steps will be easy to adapt to and once you are comfortable doing this try increasing the time to 30 minutes and than once more to 45 minutes.

You will need to minimize soreness since this is likely very new to your body so have this routine vary every other day to begin with.

As you get more comfortable with the routine try adding a day or two until you are working out 5 days a week.

One of the easiest forms of exercise to start out with is to do a brisk walk.

As long as you keep your heart rate at around 65 – 85 percent you will accomplish about as much as you would through jogging.

The way to determine if you are in your target heart rate is to still be able to carry on a conversation while sweating a little in the process of your workout.

To calculate what your low end target heart rate should be for your age take the number 220 minus your age (mine is 35) 220 – 35 = 185. Now multiply 185 by .65 and you get 120 beats per minute. Your high end target heart rate would be 185 x .85 = 157 beats per minute.

If you are 35 years of age you can safely workout within the range of 120 – 157 beats per minute so long as you are not huffing away and are still able to have a conversation.

Some people may prefer to push themselves much more than this but this is really all you need to do to begin getting into a good workout routine.

A group exercise class at a Tyler gym works very well for me because each person can workout at their own intensity while an instructor leads the class.

Pizza Hut

October 20th, 2010

Lindale has opened a walk in Pizza Hut. I really like the pizza here. Pizza Hut has great pizza and is known for their great selection of pizza crust. Although I really like the pizza and food here I was greatly disappointed the first time that I had gotten pizza from the Lindale Pizza Hut. When I walked into the small store with my sister I saw a small red sign under the cash register that said tat if the employee does not offer to show the costumer their pizza before they hand it over, the costumer will get their pizza for free. We ordered our pizza and the young man behind the counter only had to deal with a couple phone calls and one other costumer besides us. We had about twenty minutes to spare before our order was done. We walked around the stores next to Pizza Hut, such as, Cato and Katie’s. When we came back the pizza was ready to go. The young employee handed us our pizza and did not offer to open the box and show us our order. I pointed out the sign and some what jokingly said that we should get our pizza for free. The employee got really upset that I would call him out on his mistake. I really was not going to make him to give it to me until he got mad at me and claimed that he was extremely busy (there was no one else in the store at this point) and it was wrong that I point out the policy. We ended up just walking out with our pizza and not getting it for free. I should of went back and complained but I knew that my family may have been annoyed when I brought back cold pizza. I was really frustrated that the employee gave such attitude. I like Pizza Hut pizza, but next time I go to Pizza Hut and the employee does not show me the pizza before handing it over, I will ask to get my pizza for free, no matter what excuse the employee gives me

Cheddars

October 23rd, 2009

On a Sunday afternoon the waiting room in the popular Cheddars restaurant begins to pour out on to the sidewalk. People crowd together for a good table. You would think that an extremely popular place would have me saying great praises about the well cooked food and the great service. Well, that was not my experience, and I have returned and again and again both the food and the services were below par.

As I walked into the over populated restaurant I stood shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers. Waiting for a table and, because of the hype, expecting the greatest food. They handed me a vibrating beeper with a red blinking light. As it begins to flash and vibrate I get excited as if I have won the lottery. As the hostess dressed in black lead me to my booth. I sat waiting as the young waiter approached dressed nicely with a blue collar shirt and black pants and a tie.

I flipped through the menu and everything sounded so good with great prices. For a second I started to understand all the people standing in the small crowed waiting area. I ordered my usual Dr. Pepper, what is the point of free refills when the waiter never comes to refill your drinks?

After hearing the amazing rumors, I order the spinach dip. I must admit, my taste buds sang as I dipped the thin chip into the layers of melted different cheese and green spinach topped with a spoon full of sour cream. I started to eat the warm outer sides of the dip but as I got into the center I took a large bite of halfway frozen spinach and cold cheese. I started to get frustrated that my drink still has not been filled, and annoyed that my food was not sitting in front of me after 30 minutes.

Finally my well-done steak and loaded bake potato sat in front of me. In my vocabulary “well-done” steak does not mean bloody and bright red. I was waiting for my food to grow legs moo at my and walk off. I ask the waiter to take it back and put it back on the grill. About twenty minutes of being sick of waiting, the waiter brings it back. As I cut into the slab of meat once again, I was so upset as again it was still really pink.

I was too annoyed and frustrated to ask a second time to re-cook my steak that I just asked for my ticket. I love when I ask for my ticket and the waiter has it in their little pouch on their belt and just hand it to you the second you ask for it. But that is just to easy to do for the waiters at Cheddars. I watch the waiter as he stands at the computer flirting with the cute hostess, with his phone in his hand hoping to win over her number, not even paying attention to what he is suppose to be doing.

Finally after waiting until he is finished his conversation, he brings me my ticket. I pay the amount for the food and leave. Well I was certainly disappointed walking through the crowded parking lot to my car. I don’t understand how they have so much business, I guess quantity is more important than quality. No, that still does not explain it.

I did return to Cheddars for my dear friend’s 21st birthday, but this time we sat at the bar. I was surprised at the amazing service and a great atmosphere, besides the strange girl hitting on my married sister, and a bar fly trying to ease-drop into our conversations. Was I really in the same restaurant? They had great drinks and really good prices. Even our food was cooked and everything came out really fast. Even our drinks were constantly refilled. I don’t really know how everything was so much better and different, but I really did enjoy my bar-experience and walked away with great stories and wonderful memories.

So I don’t know what to expect each time I eat there. I could have horrible service and uncooked meat or decent food and great service. But I still don’t see why it is one of the most popular restaurants in Tyler.

The Reality of Hospitals in Tyler Texas

October 12th, 2009

Tyler Texas is quickly becoming one of the biggest growing retirement communities in the state. The reason for this is because of the two hospitals, East Texas Medical Center and Trinity Mother Francis. Though I have very little experience at either of the hospitals I have found that they are completely different.

As I walk through the front door of Trinity Mother Francis, huge, in labor, and in more pain then I ever imagined, I get sat in a wheel chair and pushed up to the elevator. Once I got up to the counter to check in, I thought I finished all the paper work before hand, but I had a pile of paper work that I still had to sign and fill out. Finally I thought they were going to bring me into my room but I was sadly mistaking. They brought me into this large room with about six bed and each separated by a curtain, and each bed with another girl screaming at the nurses to get them into their own room. Frustrated with a horrible headache and feeling like there is a terribly large pole shoving in my back I am left there with no nurse. I began to get sick and throwing up and still no nurse. Finally someone comes and asks if my nurse even knows that I am no sick and really in labor. Soon after I get moved into another room and this time the bed is a little more comfortable. After I was still sick and throwing up in a small trash can that they gave me, my mother-in-law asks where she could move the trash can. The nurse turns and rudely yells at my mother-in-law. Just wait it gets much worse. I wait awhile in excruciating pain, until the doctor comes in to give me an epidural.

After about twenty minutes of the epidural not working I tell my nurse that I thought I came out. She tells me that it is all in my head. The worse pain in my life is all in my head? I ask over and over to get the doctor to check and finally she does. He walks in and what do you know? The epidural has fallen out and was not working. So the doctor has to redo it and the nurse has to hold me up. I knew that I was falling off the bed and the doctor told her over and over to help me scoot back onto the bed, but she wouldn’t. I guess you might think that I am not the best patient, but I wouldn’t have complained at all if she did her job that she got paid for while I was in the worse pain of my life. I delivered in this room and had a great doctor. The most beautiful little girl entered into the world. They quickly began to move me once I was able to walk again. I was so tired and just wanted to go back to sleep. Once they moved me into my third room they began to bring more and more paper work. I was lucky enough to have a shower in my room, but other girls had to walk down the hall to take a shower in the shared bathroom.

Though my doctor was a great doctor. I hated getting moved from room to room and I was treated horribly by the nurse. I do not recommended to anyone to have a baby there. I was very disappointed.

Just a couple years later I was once again pregnant and about to have my second little girl. This time I decided to go to East Texas Medical Center. This delivery was a little different from the beginning because I was induced. I arrived at 5:00 in the morning and was led into a really large room. I sat there comfortably without any paper work to do, because I filled it all out before going up there. Two nurses walked in being really helpful and they were extremely nice. They helped me in everyway that I needed them. I started into labor and the nurses kept on checking on me and getting everything I needed without question and with understanding of my discomfort. I contracted, labored and recovered in the same room. I wasn’t asked to get up or move around. I was constantly checked on during my recovery. My second beautiful girl was born here and every memory is so wonderful. The hospital felt cleaner and more comfortable. Even the food was better here.

My recovery was longer and much more painful with my first child at Mother Francis, but at ETMC I healed quickly and with very little pain. The nurse at Mother Francis did things wrong and this caused me more pain later.

I was very frustrated at ETMC that they did not send in the form that I filled out for the social security card, so it ended up being a lot more work in the long run, but I know that that was not a normal thing, and that it was just a mix up.

I know that I do not have much experience to completely compare the two hospitals, but with the experiences that I do have I completely recommend East Texas Medical Center and many other mothers that I have talked to that have babies delivered at both hospitals agree with me.
