Christ Church’s Epiphany Group

October 21st, 2010

Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler has recently unveiled a new program. The Epiphany Group is a two tiered class and or outreach to college and post- college age people seeking a more active spiritual life and a community with whom to connect. Father Matt Boulter (assistant rector of Christ Church) directs the groups, which meet Tuesday night on the campus of UT Tyler, and Thursday nights in the Grelling- Spence Building at Christ Church in down town Tyler respectively.

The Epiphany group’s goal is to explore the concept of community as it pertains to the Christian faith. Father Matt leads the group in an investigation of what it means to live a Christian life and participate in a Christian community in the context of a modern society that seeks pull us in many directions at the same time. The group has both a social component, and more formal one. Meaning there are social outings, local outreach projects and classroom style meetings. Being that Christ Church is an Episcopal Church the classes maintain a loose liturgical form, but all Christians (and non-Christians for that matter) are welcome regardless of denominational affiliation, and would be comfortable with the experience. The group is currently beginning a new study of the book of Galatians entitled “Grace Changes Everything: New Freedom, New Family.”

Football, Football Everywhere

September 30th, 2010

Dallas CowboysNow that fall is in full swing, (thank God it’s finally cooling off), so is the public’s demand for more football. It is now possible to watch a live action football game nearly every night of the week. How? Well, the newly formed United Football league (UFL) is now being televised on the new sports network called Versus. The league is made up of five teams who will evidently play each other several times a season ending in November. As far as I can figure, the original plan was for the new league to be a sort of minor league from which the NFL can draw talent. The only problem is the UFL is currently composed of NFL has beens and almost weres like Dante Culpepper, Jeff Garcia, Denny Green and others. If this league wants to find a niche as a funnel for football talent they’re going to have to pick younger players and develop them into NFL ready candidates. Versus televises the UFL games on Thursday nights.

In the meantime the NFL Network is now carrying the occasional Canadian Football League (CFL) game, starting this season. The contract issues have finally been ironed out so that the CFL can make at least a once a week appearance starting back in July, and ending with the season closer in early November. Friday night’s game will feature Montreal vs. Calgary. Of course Saturday belongs to NCAA football and Sunday and Monday to the NFL. All this makes for two nights off (Tuesday and Wednesday) for the Football addict. It should be mentioned, all this stepping up of alternatives makes me wonder if the networks are hedging their bets against the possibility of a player’s walk out of the NFL next season.

I should also remind area readers that with the Texas Rangers heading into the playoffs having had arguably one of their greatest seasons ever, this is not the year or the month to tune out post- season baseball! So these are my two closing words of caution: Remember the boys of summer this fall, and be careful not to over- dose on football. There are too many good seasons yet to come, to waste one’s passion on cheap thrills.

Caffe Tazza in Tyler Texas

Caffe Tazza Coffee Shop

Caffé Tazza

4815 Old Bullard Road
Tyler, TX 75703-1214

Tyler’s small Italian style café, Caffe Tazza, has caught the eye of many artists and musicians. The small café is a great place to grab a decent priced coffee beverage or a great pastry, or even a light meal.

Besides having the usually light sandwiches and coffee house drinks, Caffe Tazza allows local musicians and artists to show off their talents. The café holds shows for all different artist, painters, and photographers and all types of artists. It is great for Tyler to have place that local artists can be noticed for their talents. These shows are held Thursday nights from 5pm until 9pm.

The small coffee shop is a nice quiet atmosphere and as you walk into the café you feel relaxed. It is a great place to do work or homework, because you can focus and concentrate on your work. It is nice to have a place like this available for anyone.

Really the off putting thing about the café is the fact that the sandwiches that are served to you just sit behind glass. I don’t know how long they have been sitting there, but it is unappetizing to see the tuna salad sandwich sitting there and the bread getting soggy from the juices of the meat. The whole idea makes me turned off to the food.

Caffe Tazza in Tyler may be a great place to hang out, drink a hot cup of coffee, and to get in touch with the local art community, but I would not go there expecting a great meal, just a great time.
