With home construction and home repair problems I constantly experience at my house I can get really frustrated as I have no construction back ground and cannot really fix too many of these things myself. I love to try but I usually screw something up along the way.
What I love to get is a helpful tip along the way that shows me a quick way to fix one of the many problems you often see in an older built house like mine. Many old houses have air conditioning ducts that have never been wrapped with insulation or had the cracks painted with a paint substance called mastic.
If you have been in your homes attic and have noticed that your ducts are not wrapped in insulation than you can almost bet that mastic has not been applied either. What mastic does is to seal the duct which typically reduces the air leakage coming out of those duct systems around the size of a large pizza.
Just imagine having a a whole the size of a pizza on the side of your house where your cool AC air just blows right out of. This is what is happening if you have not had your duct work sealed using mastic. This job can easily be done by a home owner and requires two very easy to get things and nothing more. You simply go to the hardware store and buy a can of mastic and a paint brush.
Next go up into your attic and paint the mastic around where each duct piece connects to the next one. You will be up in your attic awhile so be sure to wait until the sun goes down to do this work.
By doing this small construction job that requires little construction knowledge you can reduce your monthly electric bill dramatically.
If you would like an AC contractor to come to your Tyler home and check out this possibility for you I recommend giving Smith County Aire Serv a call at (903) 592-7773.

As in most of the country we are in what the weather men are calling the heat dome. This dome of heat has kept temperatures above 100 degrees going on over 30 days now. At this time many peoples air conditioning bills are doubling in price.
The Texas ERCOT electric grid is experiencing record breaking demand which means if you are not locked into a fixed electric rate you will likely get a pretty nasty looking bill.
When it comes down to it it doesn’t matter a whole lot what your electric rate is if your home is not energy efficient. Regardless of your electric rate you will likely see your bill double in price as you use twice as much electricity usage.
The main way your home uses this additional energy is by the energy your air conditioning system uses. In East Texas we spend most of our money on the electricity bill on air conditioning charges.
In places like Seattle Washington they go year round without ever turning on an AC unit. Since we do not have the luxury of that it is important that you insulate your attic and look into upgrading to a high efficiency air conditioner.
A high efficiency unit can reduce our electricity bill by about 1/3rd. You may spend a couple thousand more on a high efficiency unit but the money comes back to you right away which makes it a very smart low cost money saving option.
Of course insulating your attic is one of the cheapest ways but upgrading your AC unit is right behind that. Aire Serv of Smith County can help you with looking at high efficiency air conditioner options. They offer financing as well so you don’t have to pay for all of the cost right away.
Now is a good time to look into the small cost involved in significantly reducing your electric bill in Tyler Texas.

Cavenders
2025 W SW Loop 323
Tyler Texas
903 561 2510
Cavenders is a Western store for men, women and children selling hats, cowboy boots, clothing and some jewellery and accessories. Cavenders is a wonderful Texas experience for the tourist and a great place to shop for the local.
As you go in, you will probably be greeted with a ‘howdy’ from the friendly staff at the checkout. The store is well laid out. On the right is the kid’s section and the men’s boots and hats. There is a huge variety and all sizes are available. Helpful assistants will find the right size for you – you have to get hat size right otherwise it will look or feel weird! Then there are shelf after shelf of boots, from the inexpensive but long lasting Justin boots to the more expensive Luccheses and others. There are boots with round toes, square toes and pointy toes, flat boots, heels, and all different colors and some different materials and trims. You will find something you like for sure.
On the front left side of the store is the ladies section – boots and clothes. You can find lots of pretty tops as well as jeans and beaded flipflops as well as cowboy boots. Behind that is the men’s clothing section – lots of Wranglers and checked shirts but a good deal of other stuff too – both work quality and going out stuff. The clothes at Cavenders in general are fairly expensive but the quality of the items stocked is really good and they will last and last.
In the middle of the store are the belts and buckles, jewellery, billfolds and so on. I love the silver jewellery they sell at Cavenders. They also have some Texas memorabilia, cards, key rings and Western style home decor items.
Service at Cavenders is polite and helpful. They will return any unworn item with a receipt and will issue giftcards if you need to exchange but haven’t time to shop. A Cavenders gift card is always a great gift by the way.
Occasionally Cavenders will have a ‘Round-up’ sale with $10 or $20 off certain brands of cowboy boots or something similar but on the whole there are not many ‘bargains’ to be found as Western fashions don’t change a great deal so the stock stays pretty consistent.
Finally, Cavenders is open until 8pm so you can shop after work. They also have a great website and you can order online. This is great for guys that wear out their clothes and just want repeat orders of the same thing!

CHUCK E CHEESE
736 W SW loop 323
Tyler
75701
903 581 4550
ChuckECheese is a place dedicated for kid’s entertainment. It is located in central Tyler, not far from the mall (and nationally in over 500 locations!)
Even if you have never been there, you will probably recognize the mouse that is the trademark of ChuckECheese. Thanks to clever marketing and sponsorship of programs on PBS, my kids knew ChuckECheese way before we even went there and were begging me to take them.
I went somewhat unwillingly, but am glad I did as the kids had a whale of a time and I had a morning enjoying their enthusiasm and wonder. Luckily, it was a quiet day – I can’t imagine what it would be like on a Saturday morning or in the vacation time.
The main focus is arcade games. Some are modern ‘Sega’ style which encourage skill to play and are highly animated, others are more of a gamble and still others are like fairground games – ball toss etc. There are also ride on machines – for smaller children and a car where you can sit with a plastic ChuckECheese and have a photo taken.
As you enter you are stamped with a ‘magic’ UV number. This is for security so that they can monitor that the right children are leaving with the right adults etc. Then you need to buy tokens for the games and machines. There are deals which include food and drinks or you can just buy the tokens for the amusements. From there on, the fun starts and you are left in a whirlwind as your children take control and run around trying all the various games. Most of the games have a reward system which involves each machine spewing out paper tickets. The more points you score on the game, the more tickets you are given. Don’t lose these tickets – at the end of your playtime, you can trade them in for prizes.
Our kids had a blast at ChuckECheeses. It was quite an expensive morning but when the weather is not good for being outside it is a good option for a special treat. They serve pizza at ChuckECheese and we had a salad and drinks too which were fine – but the quality of the food is certainly not the main attraction.
Finally, a word of caution. Before you trade in your tickets, let your children know that the prizes are just little gimmicks and not to expect too much from just one day of gaming. The big prizes are for people that go there regularly and who are experts at the games. My friend’s toddler had a complete meltdown because the excitement had been so great all morning and she thought she had got so many tickets but when she came to redeem them for a prize she only had enough for a little plastic bracelet or some Tootsie Rolls, and that broke her heart!
Lastly, you can save a lot on the price of tickets by looking for coupons online (Google will find some). There is also a party package available for birthdays which is very popular. ChuckECheese is open every day from 9 am.

Austin Bank
5515 Old Bullard Rd.
Tyler, TX 75703
Ph: 903-561-5400
Fx: 903-561-9962
There are 5 Austin banks in Tyler – I use the SW loop 323 branch for personal banking.
They are open from 9am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday if you need to go into the bank and you can use the drive-in service from 7.30am until 6pm and from 8am until 12 noon on Saturdays. This is really convenient if you keep normal working hours and still need to use your bank before or after work. I love the drive-thru service as I don’t have to get my kids out of the car which means a quicker visit and less hassle for everyone!
Austin Bank in Tyler
Austin bank is very much a family centered local bank with 28 branches all located in East Texas. We love it because the service is so personal – it is nice to deal with someone who knows you and even remembers your kid’s names! The staff are really friendly, efficient and accommodating.
We chose Austin bank 3 years ago because we wanted a local bank account which also offered free online banking and online statements as we hate the paper that piles up and the waste of resources that it causes. (Also it is great to see instant changes to our finances on the computer).
It is also useful to be able to make changes to our account balance by phone. Austin bank offers a free bill pay service too. We have an ATM card and debit card which have always worked well and we have never had any problems with fraud.
I highly recommend Austin bank – their commitment to customer service and efficiency make it a delight to be a customer with them.
