Some of the best Italian in Tyler can be found at the corner bistro, Little Italy’s. Located at 3320 South Broadway where it has been for many years this restaurant continues to serve authentic Italian in a relaxed casual environment.
Little Italy’s is a great stop for either a family dinner or a business lunch. It’s all about the food here, as opposed to atmosphere. You won’t find violinists playing Italian love songs for moonstruck patrons. What you will find is great food at reasonable prices.
The Lasagna and spaghetti at Little Italty are both unbeatable but their signature dish would have to be the calzone. Packed with cheese and sausage it’s the best calzone in town. But don’t come to Italy’s expecting the Olive Garden or Johnny Carino’s.
This is more of a local joint where regulars have a “usual.” They also offer take out for that quick stop off on your way home from work. If you won’t bad quality recipes we recommend Olive Garden. If you want good food and an extra long hour wait for that food than go to Johnny Carino’s.
So next time you find you have craving for great Italian without calling ahead, try this local spot. Before you know it, you’ll find that you have a “usual.”

I recently visited Lifeway Christian Store, something I’d not done since before the name was changed from Better Books Christian Center. In the past several years the store has undergone a makeover. The inside is quite large and very well stocked.
Lifeway is something like a Christian Barnes and Noble. They carry any literature, music or movies currently in demand in church circles. The store also offers all kinds of support materials for pastors and youth ministers. They carry a full selection of vestments and choir gowns as well as supplies for administering the Eucharist.
The children’s section in particular, is excellent. There is a corner equipped with a television showing the latest cartoons where kids can sit while their parents shop. The book selection is current but not real deep; meaning that I expected to find more classic Christian literature than I actually did. The store carries a huge variety of Bibles; however much of the theology and commentary has a fairly narrow target audience. Baptists, or something closely akin will probably find what he or she is looking for, but the more orthodox among us may find it necessary to special order what we need, something the staff will gladly do. All this being said, Lifeway is a beautiful Tyler Texas book store, and the staff is helpful and very friendly.
So whether you’re looking for a particular item or are just seeking a cool place to spend a summer afternoon, Lifeway is a great place to take the family. For more information, see their website: www.lifewaystores.com . Located in the Old English Village on South Broadway, in Tyler.

Over the last few years, the sporting goods mega store / museum has become the order of the day. Now, I realize I often tend to favor local business over larger chains. But in this case, I’m taking a different tack. These new stores often serve as a show case for the latest and greatest new products in the sporting goods world, sort of a Sharper Image only useful and fun.
Well Tyler now has one of its own in Gander Mountain. A visit here has something for everyone. Even my little boy is entranced by the stuffed game of all kinds which hangs on the walls. To him, it’s almost like visiting a zoo or a museum.
Admittedly the Tyler Gander Mountain, (located on South Broadway) is not the most well stocked sporting goods store in town. In comparison to someplace like Academy Sports, G.M.s market is smaller since it caters more to the outdoorsman than the athlete. It is one of the few places (other than book stores) however, where I actually enjoy browsing for browsing’s sake.
The fishing and tackle section is a vortex I find it easy to get sucked into. A visit to G.M. prior to a fishing trip increases the cost of my trip exponentially. The camping section is full of temptation as well but fortunately (or unfortunately) my budget doesn’t allow for too many impulse buys of items contained there.
It prices at Gander Mountain are not particularly low. Much of what they stock is larger, high dollar items. For those of us in the market for smaller things like fishing lures or bait the prices are slightly higher than elsewhere since the customer is essentially paying for the selection. It’s generally worth it though since a trip here is in and of itself, an experience. For more information see their website at www.gandermountain.com, or better yet, stop in for a visit. They’re located at 151 Market Square Blvd. just off South 69, in Tyler TX.

With the closing of Circuit City Tyler finds itself with only one major retail electronics store. Best Buy in Tyler is located on South Broadway behind Ryan’s Steakhouse. The store is generally neat and clean and has great customer service. If you’re looking for a more expensive product, particularly on the order of a new computer or Television, you should be able to find some fairly good sales. It’s the smaller items on which you’ll find some rather unreasonable mark ups. Any kind of cords, power supplies, or other accessories are far too expensive. I have often found myself turning to other sources like e-bay and have saved hundreds on brand new items.
The movie selection is pretty good. I can usually find what I’m looking for provided it’s not too obscure. Although I must confess, based on my last couple of visits, the movie selection seems to have shrunk some. That could be a reflection of a lack of quality product lately. If what you’re looking for isn’t there, I would suggest a visit to Barnes and Noble instead.
As a generally intelligent adult I find a trip through the music aisle an embarrassing experience. I’m not sure whether I should be ashamed by my own lack of knowledge about the current music trends, or whether the musicians themselves are the ones who should be ashamed, both of their own product as well as the way they appear on the labels. Maybe I’m just getting older, and more like my father, but I suspect it’s the latter. These days I prefer the anonymity of iTunes or Amazon when making my music purchases. Not that my tastes are that bad per say, I just find it awkward to explain my purchases, something I feel the inexplicable desire to do. It’s kind of similar to answering the infamous question, “What’s that book about anyway?”
I do enjoy the gaming section although I no longer have the time I once had to invest in that pursuit. By far the best part of the store for me is the computer section. I find it so satisfying to browse the aisles for things I’d love to have but can’t afford. Ok so that’s a bit cynical. I can actually afford a computer every couple of years or else I wouldn’t be typing this, but I digress.
Bottom line is that Best Buy in Tyler is a pretty good store if you like the retail giants. While I seldom go there just to hang out, I do enjoy browsing a little. Larger items are priced fairly low if you take into account the various rebates available, but when it comes to smaller items you’re probably better off trying a few other sources first. To view their website, go to www.bestbuy.com.

Tyler’s newest sporting goods facility is located on South Broadway. Academy Sports is probably the best such store in town. It carries just about every imaginable sports related product. Popular franchise items like Cowboys and Rangers paraphernalia are on sale and college merchandise is in stock as well. But there are also more general goods like swim wear and hiking gear. Unlike other sports shops in town, this store can supply the needs of any kind of athletic or sporting pursuit. They carry tents and camping gear, hunting and fishing supplies, boots and cleats, footballs and baseball gloves.
For the coach of any team or any sport, Academy can supply uniforms, pads and any other necessary equipment. Even hard to find items like score books and clip boards have an aisle here. Academy sporting goods also carries a full range of golfing apparel and accessories including clubs, balls, bags, etc. The store is staffed by helpful knowledgeable people, a good thing because it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the place.
Academy is not exactly a discount store, but due to its size there’s enough variety that even thrifty customers should be able to find what they need without breaking the bank. So when school starts again and the kids start asking for new uniforms and sports equipment save yourself some time and check here first. If Academy doesn’t have it, it’s probably not available in Tyler. For more information call (903) 266-3100, or visit them at 8668 S Broadway Ave in Tyler.
