To tip or not to tip? The question of tipping the Sonic car hops has many different opinions and answers. Many people think that they should not tip because it is fast food and you are eating in your car. You probably will have to clean up your own trash out of your car. The car hops do not get paid minimum wage most of the time because they are expected to get tips.

I don’t really know where I stand on the issue. When I have sat in my car and the car hop brought my food out to me I usually give them a small tip like a dollar, I may give more if they actually still wore skates. When you are paying with a card at the drive up, you do not get the choice to tip. So if Sonic made it easy and clearer if you were suppose to tip the car hops, maybe more people would.

I am not a big fan of the Sonic food. There really are two reasons to go to Sonic: sand volleyball, and drinks. Many Sonics in Tyler do not have the sand volleyball court, or the play area. The only thing that those Sonics have going for them is the large selections of Sonic drinks and ice cream treats.

For some reason Sonic ice is the best ice around. The other night I was having a huge craving for a Sonic Snickers Blast. The Sonic was suppose to about an hour and half after I got there, but when I asked for my ice cream treat they had informed me that they already had shut down and cleaned the ice cream machine. This is a really annoying thing that fast food places do.

If the restaurant is not closed I expect them to serve everything on the menu. There really is no reason to go to sonic if they wont serve the menu that they claim they serve the WHOLE menu all day!

Faulkner Park in Tyler Texas Has a Splash Water Park For Kids

July 2nd, 2010

Faulkner Park

Texas summers get really hot, and not everyone can afford to go to a water park everyday. But at Faulkner Park they have a great way to cool down with out the emptying your pocket. They have a small water playground with built in water guns and different water sprinklers. It is a great place to have a family picnic.

Children have a blast in the sun finding new friends and playing in both the water playground and the normal playground. They can get really dirty and then wash off while paying! The worse part about this play area is the freaky slide that slide down a hill. Kids will love it and parents hate it because they don’t know where their children go as they slide down the side of a small cliff. Children have a blast climbing up and down the rope dome.

You can have a relaxing time fishing out on their beautiful small lake. And walking the beautiful trails around the park. Faulkner has a few little league baseball fields and two practice fields. They have little league games and tournaments out on these fields. You can also play tennis on the nice tennis courts which also hold tournaments and matches.

Faulkner has different workout programs for people looking for a good workout and to meet new friends. They have classes with great constructors that will build you up and encourage you to do your best and push yourself.

Faulkner is my personal favorite park in Tyler. My children have a blast playing in the water. Other parks in Tyler have tried to do a water playground but have succeeded in putting in a fountain that is backed up with dirty water. The Faulkner water play area always seems very clean and the water is constantly drained. Your kids will have fun and you don’t have to worry about the water that they are playing in, if it is germ filled or not.

Discovery Science Place

Discovery Science Place

Hours M-S 9-5pm
Sun 1-5pm
Major holidays – closed

Our family love the Discovery Science Place (DSP) in Tyler!

There are 3 large rooms filled with different ‘hands on’ experiences for children and the effect is a stimulating and fun day out to absorb even the most hyper-active of children.

For the little ones, who love imaginative play – the room filled with different life experiences is a huge attraction. They can dress up and pretend to be a firefighter, pilot, mechanic, shop assistant, pizza chef, veterinarian, a nursery nurse or even a paramedic in a real ambulance! These exhibits are sponsored by local businesses and are changed and restocked frequently. The room next door has changing exhibits which target the older child and are very educational. Here they can see physical science in action with things like magnets, weather simulations and my children’s favorite – a bubble table where they could make enormous bubbles!

The main room has so many things to see and do that I can’t possibly list them all. There is a model mountain that you can climb inside and experience a simulated earthquake, a ship, a fossil dig, ball games, a light show and a skeleton to name but a few. There is a very small soft play area for toddlers and an aquarium and bee hive too. For the construction-minded there is a duplo table, other blocks, magnets and puzzles.

In the summer and during one week at Christmas, the DSP has ‘camps’ for kids where they conduct science experiments and create things to take home. You can also have your children’s party here. Home school co-ops would certainly benefit from a trip to the DSP.
There are 2 things that need to be noted about the DSP. Firstly, and rather disappointingly, there is no cafe. Perhaps that is intentional so that parents get involved with their children’s learning experiences rather than sitting and drinking a cup of coffee in peace while the children play, but a place to buy snacks would be great. There is however, a place provided where you can eat your own sack lunch and a lunch room for larger groups.

Secondly I would say that the DSP has a host of things to keep children under 8 amused on numerous visits but I really don’t think it is educational ‘for all ages‘ like the brochure implies. I hope that this museum develops and grows to meet the needs of the older child too.

The admission is currently $6 per person which is reasonable for small families but rather steep for families of more than 4. There are of course annual memberships which allow unlimited visits and discounts in the store – which is full of fun toys and activities for kids.
The Discovery Science Place is a great attraction for kids in Tyler.

Grace Day Care

January 8th, 2010

If you drop you children off at a daycare at 8:00 in the morning and pick them up at 5:00 do you really know what goes on all day with your children? In Tyler daycares are hard to judge which one is good for you and your child. Always check your daycare’s rating online, if the Tyler day care has a website, or just ask the daycare director. A daycare I really like in Tyler is Grace Community Daycare. Having worked in the daycare business, I know that they will give the best care for your child. Here they believe it is important for a daycare to have lessons plans planned out to give your children good education at the earliest age.

They have separate classrooms depending on the ages of the children to ensure the best education. Each classroom for the older children has its own bathroom, sinks and refrigerator. At Grace Community Day care every room is painted with a different Bible story such as Jonah and the arc and the miracle of the fish and loaves of bread. Everyday the children are taught lessons about family and God. They will teach children that they are able to make choices and what are the right choices to make. They have separate gated playgrounds for different ages to reduce the possibility of children getting hurt.

If it is raining or too cold they also have play areas inside big enough for your children to run off all their energy. All the older classes go on field trips and have swimming days during the summer. They also provide healthy snacks everyday. They send a schedule home every month with your child to show what snacks are provided every day. You are also able to pay for already made meals. All the older classes go on field trips and have swimming days during the summer.

Every teacher goes through a thorough background check. And every classroom and play area has a security video camera that is available for the parents to play back footage if a problem accurse. If you are not the one picking up your child, you have to call ahead an the one picking the child will be carded. To ensure that no one picks up your children without your permission or your knowledge.

Your child’s safety is a first priority. They do a monthly fire drill, so in cause of an emergency your child and the staff will know what to do. So you can relax and know that your child is in good hands. Every teacher has to take certain amount of hours of training every year to insure the best quality of education that your child is able to get. You will be able to watch your children grow and see all the crafts that they do during the week. They will learn all different lessons through teaching and songs. Visit Grace Day Care today in Tyler Texas or give them a call.

The teachers will play and interact with your children and get to know and love them personally. For the best security and education for your child Grace is a one of Tyler’s best daycares. Their ratings are constantly high and parents and children are always satisfied.
