Hollytree’s light displays

November 18th, 2010

Tyler Texas Christmas LightsIf you do not feel like paying money to see Christmas lights, than you can take your family to the Hollytree gated neighborhood. The fancy houses are each decorated with amazing displays of colorful lights. A couple houses even have a radio station that you can tune into to and watch a light display that goes along with the music. Many of the house’s Christmas light display are amazing.

But there is one huge down side to going to the Hollytree neighborhood, and that is traffic. Every year as you first pull into the neighborhood you are greeted by an extremely long line of cars and horrible drivers. I always feel bad for the people that live in the neighborhood that are just trying to get home.

One of the first houses you will see when you drive into Hollytree in Tyler Texas does one of the biggest light displays every year. They rent out a radio station that goes along with their colorful and vibrant Christmas lights. My kids love to go here and see all the different lights! I think that going through this neighborhood is a fun and free way to celebrate Christmas and spend time as a family.

Coldwell Banker

September 14th, 2010

We have been living in a small apartment for a while and felt like it was about time to look into what it took to move into a house of our own. We had seen a couple houses in the Whitehouse area with a sign in the front yard for Coldwell Banker United Realtors. I had decided to go ahead and call about the houses to see how much we needed and to talk to someone about the process. I had called the office of “the Judy Kunzman team” and talked to Paula Crouch. I was pretty confused on what to do first and where to start. Paula Crouch was really understanding helped me get the process started. I expressed to her my price range and how big of a house we wanted. We need a house that is at least three bedrooms and it is very important to us to have a nice yard. Above all of that I wanted to be sure that we lived in a safe neighborhood.

After calling all different lending firms, for information about getting pre-approved for a loan, we had a chance to meet Paula Crouch and she showed us around a couple houses. The houses that she showed us were perfect. Both of the houses were clearly in our price range and they had gated back yards. Both of the houses were in the same safe neighborhood. Most of the people in the neighborhood also had small children. Paula was very honest with us and she showed us the good things about the houses but she expressed the concerns that she had about both houses.

We ended up running into some issues with our apartment contract and with getting the loan that we originally wanted. Paula Crouch was very understand with our situation. Although we decided to wait for a few months to buy a house, we will definitely call up Paula Crouch to help us find the perfect home for our family.

Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church

January 12th, 2010

A church can have many angles from which it wants to impact its congregation. How many often take the route of challenge? Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church does. Pastor James McMillan of PRUMC has a wonderful way of making the scriptures real and applicable. Every week he comes to the pulpit with fresh revelation of who God is and how we are to know him in deep personal ways. PRUMC is very traditional in its ways but at the same time has an edge that some people might be looking for. There are three services, 8:15; 10:00; 11:15, the first two have traditional worship and the last has contemporary worship. The band that plays is very talented and certainly puts on a small show. Even though this church is small you may easily feel as though you are a part of something bigger.

Something readily unique is that this church is 150 years old. It started on another piece of property not too far from its current place on Dixie drive and HWY 64. The church has been at this location for the past 70 years (give or take a few) and has no plan on moving any time soon. Strike up a conversation with any of the youth and you will soon find that most of their relatives as far back as their great great grandmother’s have gone to this methodist church. It is quite well rooted! As intimidating as that may sound, for being a community to break into, it is quite the opposite. The people are very welcoming, attentive and genuinely caring. This congregation is eager to help each other, support each other and encourage each other. Just this last fall the whole church got together to have a Tyler Junior College fall kick off and served food to the students and played music in the streets. The neighborhood was full of conversation, music and love. It was quite the evening!

They also have a very good youth program in the first and second services. The older youth (Junior High and High School) meet at least once a week, they eat together, play games and have a time of focusing on God’s word. The Young Adults (college age) are encouraged to be there with the youth and also spend quite a bit of time together, being there for each other.

Right now the church is being challenged to read the Bible in 90 days. They are on the second week and are going strong. They are meeting in small groups every week to discuss the revelations from God about his word. Pastor James has done a really good job portraying God’s heart and intent as he has studied Abraham and shared it with the congregation. There is quite a sense of reality to the scriptures that he isn’t afraid to deliver!

Wednesday nights at 6:00 this family meets together to eat dinner and enjoy each other. They serve wonderful food and only ask a simple donation of whatever you have when you come. Family Night Life is the place to be for community of Wednesdays.

PRUMC is well worth your try to see what they have going on. Check it out!

Andy Woods Elementary School Area

November 30th, 2009

When relocating to Tyler Texas it is sometimes hard to picture what a house may look like simply from the real estate listing emails you receive from your Tyler realtor. The way me and my wife found our house was by driving out to a neighborhood and looking at homes we liked. We would occasionally find a house that was for sale and it would sometimes be just what we were looking for.

You can use an MLS search tool to look through homes in a certain zip code. You will be able to narrow down your choices this way but it is always worth getting into your car and going to areas that are known to be good locations to live in. The Andy Woods Elementary school area in Tyler Texas is a great affordable location in Tyler to buy a home. There are several moderately priced neighborhoods in this area and if you work in Tyler you will likely not have a very far drive to work.

There is one house close to Andy Woods I would recommend staying away from. One of the houses has a large sign in the front yard because of a land dispute. The sign is about 10 feet tall by 5 feet and has a large map of the diputed property line. What is weird is that the property line in dispute crosses into his property by a couple feet. The fence was built several years ago and there just isn’t anything legally the guy could do anyway to get the lady to move her fence and storage shed.

The guy in question doesn’t look like he plans to budge anytime soon and the little old lady in the house he is disputing with I can’t see paying to have her fence and storage shed picked up and moved. When considering moving into this area of Tyler this is the only real problem I have seen in the area. There are a few little cottage styled houses that are really small as well that would probably go for around $70,000 – $90,000. A small cottage home would be great for a single first time home buyer. A couple with no kids could also find a pretty decent small affordable home in this area of Tyler as well. There are some larger homes in this area as well but it is good that you have your pick at different price ranges on houses in the same area.

There is a park nearby Andy Woods called Pollard Park and it has a Tennis Court and two nearby churches. The soccer fields are big enough to fly a Kite and the park has a fairly good sized playground. This year the Obama Administration is offering a $8,000 first time home buyers tax credit you don’t have to pay back. Because of the state of the economy I am not sure if this credit is a smart thing to give out right now but since it is available I would jump on it as I don’t think it will be around much longer.

I have seen people walk around the park with their dogs, some drive golf balls there in the evenings. There are about 6 tennis courts available with a large fence around them to prevent your tennis ball from going out into the road.

The Andy Woods area with the park and good elementary school system offers a low crime rate, moderately priced Tyler homes and gives you a central location in South Tyler. Your drive to Best Buy is about the same drive time as it would take to get to the court house or Tyler mall. For the location, low crime rate, school, and park I think you will get a very good deal for a home in this area of Tyler.
