Matt Flynn returns to Frozen Tundra

July 29th, 2014

The term what goes around comes around is true for Tyler’s own Matt Flynn who’s entering this season as a Green Bay Packer, where his NFL career began.

Flynn would probably tell you his pro career has been a bit of a challenge to say the least. In Green Bay, he’s had to sit behind one of the game’s best quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers. Then when Flynn finally got his chance, he made the most of it.

He made his first start against the New England Patriots in which he threw three touchdown passes, all of which were to a different receiver. His Packers lost but Flynn kept them alive.

He really turned some heads when he he had a career game against the Detroit Lions. He threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns to set a pair of franchise records. That game earned him a new contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
Unfortunately for the Tyler native however, things didn’t go as planned in Seattle. That same year (2012) the

The Seahawks drafted a quarterback out Wisconsin by the name of Russell Wilson. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he was going to leave the quarterback position open for competition in training camp, and everyone was quick to assume thta job would go to Flynn, everyone but Carroll and Wilson apparently because the rookie went on to earn the starting role.

His next stop was Oakland where he played for the Raiders. He followed the pattern set bet recent Oakland quarterbacks by coming up empty before being demoted to third string.

He travled to the other side of the country to become a Buffalo Bill. However, he didn’t a single snap in Buffalo.
Prior to his pro career, Flynn had experienced a ton of success, leading the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders to a state champioship and then the LSU Tigers to a national championship. Being on the losing end is always a rude awakening and truth is, if Flynn gets action this year, it means something went wrong with Rodgers and/or the Packers as a whole.

That’s not to say something might open up for him. It been said good things come to those who wait. Flynn has certainly been waiting.

Rose Stadium Full of History, New and Old

July 17th, 2012

So rumor has it Trinity Mother Francis Rose Stadium (or better known as just Rose Stadium) is getting new turf. Really, this may not seem like a big deal to most people but when you stop and think of the some of the big named athletes who played on the old stomping grounds, perhaps the historical significance will start to settle in a little bit.

The stadium holds a capacity of 14,000 fans and serves as home stadium to the John Tyler Lions, Robert E. Lee Red Raiders and the Tyler Junior College Apaches.

Fans have developed fond memories at the stadium, like watching the Red Raiders dominate their way to a state championship in 2004, or the Lions 10 years prior to that. If you go further back, you might remember Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell and his trunk-sized thighs* running over defenses and anybody and everybody in his way. Yeah, it’s safe to say the Tyler Rose left his mark in that stadium in more ways than one, actually probably several hundred ways.

Putting in new turf would also require tearing out the track which is also named after the Heisman Trophy winner and many Tylerites were quick to show their disapproval.

At any rate, as big of an historical figure as Campbell is to the city and the stadium, others have written their names in the history books under the Rose Stadium lights.

Past and present NFL players who played their home games at rose Stadium include Matt Flynn, Aaron Ross, Gary Baxter (hey, he was a good high school player.), Kendall Hunter, Robert Ferguson and more.

Then there are guys who played away games there, guys like Matthew Stafford, Adrian Peterson, Josh McCown, Luke McCown and others.
Regardless of what happens at Rose Stadium; new or old turf, the memories and the history will still be there. Regardless, new grass and soil has come and gone, as have new athletes. Instead of saying goodbye to history, embrace it but also enjoy watching new history be made. Go out to Rose Stadium and let it unfold before your very eyes. That way, as history unfolds, many years from now, you can tell your kids and grand-kids you saw their favorite athlete when he was only in high school.

Just think of how much you’d be kicking yourself if you turned down a chance to see Adrian Peterson in high school.

*Side note: John Madden once said, “From the waste down, Earl Campbell has the biggest legs I have ever seen.” Thanks John.

Former Red Raider to take on Patriots

December 16th, 2010

Tyler's Matt Flynn hoists the 2007 BCS National Championship trophy

Green Bay Packers’ backup quarterback, and Tyler’s own, Matt Flynn, doesn’t normally get surrounded by the press in the locker room on media day, but this day’s different seeing as he’s preparing for what might be the toughest task of his football career so far: the New England Patriots.

Although word hasn’t officially been released to the public yet, Flynn will start against the Patriots Sunday night.

“I’m excited, and I’m going to go through the week like I’m definitely going to be playing and hopefully Aaron (Rodgers) can get back, but I’m just going to get in there like I’m going to be playing and prepare like it,” Flynn told the media.

Rodgers went down in last week’s 7-3 loss to the Detroit Lions. In his debut, Flynn completed 15-of-26 passes for 177 yards and one interception. The more experience, the better, and Flynn said getting the snaps he got last week helped a lot.

“I go from getting a handful of plays during the week to getting most all of them. So it’s been good getting the timing with the receivers and just small things like working snap counts with the offensive line. If I get a chance to get in there, the timing will be a lot better than last week.”

The 8-5 Packers will take on the 11-2 Patriots on the road.

“It’s definitely a big game,” Flynn said. “ It’s a night game, it’ll be on TV, but I’ve played in games before, I know not at this level, but I’ve been on the big stage before so that’s not going to really bother me. It’s just about getting on the plane Saturday, getting completely prepared and having my mind at ease that I prepared myself as much as I can.”

Flynn knows and is grateful for having the respect of his teammates.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but I will speak for the receivers-we’ve got all the trust in the world in Matt,” Packers receiver Jordy Nelson told packers.com. “We said it last week when he came into the game against Detroit. He would take a couple throws back, but I thought he performed very well.

“I told him on the bus, ‘Right now, the receiving corps, we believe in you.’ We actually felt that from his rookie year when he came in and played well in the preseason and moved up and got second-string quarterback. We know what he can do. He won a national championship in college, and you have to be a good quarterback to do that.”

Before winning that national championship, Flynn quarterbacked the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders to a state championship during his junior year in 2001 where they fell short to Mesquite High School.

The following year, as a senior, he threw for 1,679 passing yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 305 yards and 12 touchdowns, and despite playing his last four games with a broken foot, he led his team to the state semifinals where the Red Raiders lost to Midland High School.

After high school, Flynn attended Louisiana State University.
For his first three years, he served as backup quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
As a fifth year senior, he finally got time under center as he led the Tigers to a BCS National Championship game where they beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 38-24. Flynn was named MVP of that game.

The Packers drafted Flynn in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft and signed a contract through the 2011 season.

Based on what Flynn tells the media, he seems ready to go, but’s he’s got a true test in front of him Sunday night.
