Brookshire’s Fresh, A Skeptic’s Take

April 20th, 2011

Fresh by Brookshires Grocery Store

Fresh Bakery

Electric Vehicle Courtesy Charging in Tyler

It’s Holy Week / Passover again, and again I found myself preparing for an annual Seder meal at my local church, and no I’m not Jewish, neither mainstream nor messianic. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, if that’s who you are… Judaism is a beautiful faith, I just happen to be Catholic).

As part of my responsibilities for the evening, I brought the matzos. Now to say that I “brought” it, is a grossly unemphatic way of describing the end result of a search that actually took me to groceries all over the city. Too wordy? I looked high and low and could find only one place that carried it this year. The Brookshire’s Empire’s version of the Death Star, Fresh!

I guess it’s the natural cynic in me that wanted to dislike the store before even setting foot in the building. It’s just too trendy, just another place for the Tyler’s glitterati to see and be seen even while doing such mundane things as shopping for food for the week. I guess a part of me recoils at the notion of slots for plug in cars and food that’s in some way sanctified given the lack of chemicals to keep the bugs off them.

I don’t resent anyone their food choices I just find it obnoxious that Tylerites are only now deemed progressive and enlightened enough to shop at such a socially conscious store like Fresh! I entered the temple reverently from the side entrance, dipping my finger carefully in the proffered holy water and making the sign of the cross… ok not really. But I did try some of the sample fruit set out for customers, and you know what? I must concede, it was quite good. The store is huge, and I didn’t venture into the deeper inner portion, but contented myself to peruse the food court area.

The store was very busy as it is apparently becoming a popular lunch stop and meeting place for those who work in the area. At the end of the day I was at least partially won over by the new megalith. The food that I sampled was good, the selection was enormous, and the prices, while not exactly cheap, are certainly not outrageous. Visits to the store are more of an event; especially since customers are permitted to purchase and consume wine and beer on location. So why the hesitation? First off the name, “Fresh!” I find it hard to utter the words; “What to go to Fresh?” or how about “I was at Fresh this afternoon…”

The other issue I have is equally subjective. For me it’s kind of a ways out. If I lived closer I would possibly shop there more often but as it is, my visits will probably be limited to once a month or so.

Putting “Fresh” up against Wal-Mart or the other Brookshire’s locations is tough. The selection is really very good. The product is more high end and thus costs a bit more, and the environment is more social. All in all, I must confess, it’s a pretty neat store. But don’t expect me to start recycling or driving a hybrid in order to fit in there!

Brookshires Grocery Store 5th Street

March 5th, 2011

Brookshires Grocery Store on 5th St.

Brookshires grocery store is a staple of Tyler. A family owned company that lives right here in Tyler has expanded it’s business across the country.

The Brookshires on 5th St. in Tyler is one of many locations and one of the several flagship stores in Tyler. Brookshires is an above average grocery store known for the exceptional quality of the food as well as the extraordinary and helpful nature of the staff.

Brookshires policy nurtures the comfort of it’s customers in earnest detail. The trained bag boys are required to help you bring all bags and carts to your car as well as load your groceries if needed.

The dress and appearance code assures that no one will again be disgusted with the unnatural sight of facial hair on employees, presumably to further comfort the high number of elderly shoppers into believing that since Brookshires employees always appear young then life itself has slowed down allowing them more time on this earth to spend eating groceries.

Although Brookshires is just another grocery store, it is undoubtedly a fancy grocery store. A great amount of expense and care is placed into the Tyler locations, from the arrangement of the expensive cheeses to the complimentary recipes offered by an in house chef. Brookshires does not merely sell groceries, they sell a unique and high quality cuisine of ingredients.

Locally Brookshires is unmatched in quality and selection in ingredients making it the ideal place to shop for any special home made meals or healthy organic vegetables and fruits to keep away the scurvy. Any Tyler resident is aware of the great reputation and service of Brookshires, but not all can afford it. Still, Brookshires is a well appreciated option for a better source of groceries.

WalMart Confusion

August 2nd, 2010

When I walk into Tyler’s Wal-Mart, on the corner of the Loop and highway 64, I am greeted by a group of strange men just hanging out by the entrance. I get sick of these groups of guys that shout at woman to get their numbers. I can not believe girls would actually give these guys their numbers.

As I walk through the dirty store that always seems like the floor is sticky, I get run into a bunch of little kids running through the store with no parents in sight. I get frustrated and walk down to get a tube of toothpaste. As I grab a tube of tooth paste, a shirt is stuffed behind it. I go to get a few groceries and grab something to eat at the Deli.

Some woman sell barbeque chicken chunks with flies flying all around. Some chicken falls on the greasy dirty counter and they just grabbed it up and threw it back in the container with all the other food. I was really grossed out and decided not to eat there. There is a McDonalds connected to this Wal-Mart. I don’t think I would ever eat there.

It always looks really dirty and really greasy. This Wal-Mart is known to be very dangerous and be very careful if you go there, especially at night, when really strange people can not find a better place to hang out at 11:00 at night.

It seems like some of the most stuck up people drive around the Wal-Mart off of Broadway. I always get cut off while walking into the store. One time a car was waiting for me to load my bags of groceries into the car put my two babies into the car seats and buckle them in and put my cart away, just so they could get my spot.

I was trying to hurry to be nice and they kept honking and when I looked up at the driver I noticed that they were signaling for me to hurry up. Excuse me? They should just go find another place. Oh, and by the way, please do not park in the pregnancy parking unless you are pregnant.

So I hate going there because of all the rude people that shop there. But there isn’t any other Wal-Mart that is so convenient. I can just go right across the street to Target, or stay in the same parking lot and enjoy a great burger at Whataburger. The store inside is a lot cleaner than the Wal-Mart I formally talked of, but it always is so crowded.

Every time I go to check out it seems like they have about twenty lanes and maybe five are open. So there will be at least ten people in front of you with their baskets over flowing with stuff. So Wal-Mart, open a few more check-outs, will you?

My very favorite Wal-Mart in Tyler is the newest one on Troop Highway. It is the furthest for me but I think it is worth the drive. It is the largest Wal-Mart in Tyler and always the most orderly. The food always seems so much cleaner and even the people are nicer. The parking lot is larger so people can find their own parking space and don’t have to be so rude to park.

They have great furniture for babies. It is easy to register here because everything so organized compared to the other ones. The people are nicer because they don’t feel cramped into and over crowded store with rude strangers. The greeter is even nicer. Which I think greeters are so funny. What a great job. They are called “greeters” but honestly,  how often do they really greet you. Its like security. Security from all those strange pathetic people that shop lift. But that is off the point I am trying to make.

Troop Wal-Mart greeters actually tell people hello. But I don’t think they deal with as much shop lifting as the Wal-Mart off of highway 64. There is always police there. So if you need to go to Wal-Mart go to Troop, even if it is out of the way. They always seem to have more lanes open so it takes a lot less time to come in and get out.

I’m not the biggest fan of Wal-Mart, not like I use to be. But it is the one stop for all your needs and the prices are amazing. I can ever leave the store with out first checking out the five dollar movie rack, or the three dollar sales in the baby clothes section. Wal-Mart has a policy that they will not be under sold, so you are sure to find what you need or want at a  great price.

You will find everything for every room in your house and for your car. If you need a new bed spread or a new rug, if you need new furniture or television, you will always find it at Wal-Mart. Keep your eyes open for the seasonal selection at great prices and when it starts to becomes out of season look for amazing sales.

Have fun shopping with your kids in their toys section, I always have to take a walk down the pink aisle just to see what is new and what is on sale. So shop Wal-Mart to find off-brand and brand names at a great price, “always”.

Brookshire’s Pride

March 23rd, 2010

The Brookshire’s grocery company has been named one of the top companies to work in the state of Texas. I totally agree with this award. Although I know that most people do not want to go to work in the morning, honestly, who does? Brookshire’s offers great benefits to their employees. But something that has always impressed me is that it is honestly a family-centered business. Every year they have events to honor their employees and their employee’s families.

Brookshire’s has a camp ground on Lake Palestine available for their employees and family. Every year they put on picnics to honor the workers for every part of Brookshires. Not only do they have great food but they also give away great prizes, including the flat screen television that is now hanging up in my bedroom. Brookshires has a small house available for employees and their families to stay at if they are in need, or if they have undergone some sort of disaster.

Brookshire’s has always been a family friendly company. In 1928 Wood T. Brookshire opened a small store downtown square in Tyler. Wood along with his brothers owned several different stores in East Texas. In 1939 the partnership dissolved. Brookshire was founded with the motto of “people first, profits will follow”. In 1953 Brookshire opened its first warehouse. Now Brookshires has more than 150 supermarkets throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Not only do they own the Brookshire Grocery Company, but also Super 1 Foods, and Ole Foods.

Tyler has the premiere Brookshire’s located on Rice Road. This store is the nicest store in Tyler. You are always treated with respect and the employees are always helpful. One thing that I love about the Brookshire’s Company is the fact that the employee carries out your groceries to your car for you. When you are trying to balance two children, and digging through your purse trying to find your keys, it is nice to have someone hired to put the groceries into your car.

Brookshire’s employees volunteer. The company looks at this as their way to give back to the community. All level jobs within the company find opportunities to give back, whether it is running for breast cancer or if it is cleaning the creek at Rose Rudman Park.

Brookshire Grocery Company is a great place to shop for you and your family. Their goal has been not only to make the store convenient to your needs but to also be a great experience for you and your family.

Save-A-Lot Grocery Store

Save-A-Lot

2305 West Erwin Street
Tyler, TX 75702-6736
(903) 592-1592

Save-A-Lot Grocery Store is located at 2305 W Erwin St., Tyler, Texas 75702. This grocery store saves you money by limiting the overhead on their groceries.

Any time I want to stock up on canned goods, I go to Save-A-Lot and buy the canned goods by the case. The brands are not Del Monte, but they are excellent quality brands that taste good to us, plus the cans are about half the price that other stores charge for similar canned goods. The products are left in the case and stacked up, but you don’t have to buy a case, you can buy the number of cans you wish.

The store is pretty clean and arranged to be convenient to shop. In addition to canned goods, they carry milk, eggs, butter, some ice cream, cream cheese and cheese. They have a variety of meat and prepackaged lunch meat. They carry fresh fruit and vegetables, that are good quality at a reasonable price.

Save-A-Lot carries the cheaper brands of soda, chips, crackers, cookies and snack items at a fraction of the cost at other stores. If you aren’t a brand name person and want good quality items at cheaper prices, you should go check the items and prices at Save-A-Lot.
