Carter Blood Care

September 3rd, 2012

Let me first say, I hate needles. There are very few things I’ll willingly admit I’m afraid of but the thought of needles entering my skin is one of them.

However, I’ve learned getting over my fear of needles can legitimately help save lives and it’s important that East Texans realize they have the opportunity to do the same through Carter Blood Care.

Carter Blood Care has more than 26 locations all over North, Central and East Texas, including in Tyler. It holds several blood drives, and all kinds of events and fund raisers for people of all ages.

For example, back in June, blood donors received a special Buy-one-get-one-Free ticket offer to a Texas Rangers game. Their names were also entered to win a pair of suite tickets and 10 lucky donors walked away with lower-level tickets to an exclusive VIP tour prior to a Rangers game.

A month later, just this past July, donors earned points for a gift certificate that could be redeemed for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream. The same contestants were also eligible to win a free weekend getaway to a bed and breakfast in Brenham and tickets to a Rangers game. On top of that, one lucky winner received a year’s supply of Blue Bell ice cream.

With baseball season heating, Fox Sports Southwest  is now offering blood donors in August with a chance to win tickets to watch the Rangers or team of choice.

If that’s not enough motivation, just remember, a pint of blood can save about three lives.

Tyler’s Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes

May 23rd, 2011

I realize that our summers are very full of all sorts of charitable walks, marathons, concerts, fund raisers, meet ups and every conceivable event aimed at raising money for one cause or other. I understand that they are all noble pursuits and worthy of our time and energies, but I for one, simply cannot keep up with all of them. The best strategy seems to be to dig in to the ones about whom you feel strongest, and work for its success. Writing for Tyler TX Directory however, allows me to cast a fairly wide net. As events occur throughout the year I try to promote them by simply informing the local public, which brings me to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walk coming this June.

Juvenile diabetes, or type one, is treatable but incurable. As I understand it, the patient lacks sufficient insulin to naturally store much needed glucose, and thus provide the body with energy. While most people associate diabetes with weight gain, juvenile diabetes (so named because it generally first appears in childhood), causes the patient to lose weight regardless of how much they may actually eat. Other symptoms that commonly accompany the disease are, frequent headaches, dizziness, nausea etc. The most common treatment is of course insulin injections. Insulin pumps are also being tested which would pump the hormone into the patient’s system and maintain it at normal levels. JDRF exists to help fund the search for new treatments and hopefully an eventual cure.

Tyler’s walk will be held at Bergfield Park on the 25th, beginning at 7:30 in the morning. Of course there will be children’s events, and various other vendors etc. participating throughout the day. JDFR has a great website with all kinds of information, and literature, both as promotion of its coming fund raisers and as support for parents and families dealing with juvenile diabetes. For more information, or to register for Tyler’s walk, visit that site at http://www2.jdrf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=walk_homepage .

The 2011 Tyler Cattle Baron’s Gala

May 21st, 2011

Well, another big summer event is almost upon us. The annual Tyler Cattle Barons Gala will be held at Graham Farm in Bullard Texas, on Saturday, June 11, 2011. Tyler has been putting on the gala for a generation now and it has become a significant event for our area. All summer, similar fund raisers are held around Texas and the country at large. Of course all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society (ACS) to be used for cancer treatment and research. ACS cites that eleven million cancer survivors celebrating another birthday this year. The Society is the largest private fund raiser for cancer research. Their webpage claims that they have raised 3.4 billion dollars to combat all forms of the disease since the organization’s inception in 1946. (And I don’t doubt it by the way).

The theme for Tyler’s Gala this year is “Route 66, Crusin’ for the Cure,” and the evening features the music of Pat Green, Wade Bowen and JB and the Moonshine Band. Local businesses of all sorts have donated a litany of items including special goods and services, travel packages, and tickets to various other events. In addition to the silent auction there will be an elegant dinner, entertainment and dancing, late into the evening. As you can imagine, tickets to the event aren’t cheap. Depending on whether or not you want to attend the pre-party mixer, (which features food, an open bar, and prime seating to the evening’s festivities), or are just interested in the main event, they run from one hundred, twenty five dollars, to three hundred dollars. Since all proceeds go to a great cause the cost is not the central issue for most attendees. For more information on the 2011 Tyler Cattle Baron’s Gala, visit the American Cancer Society’s website at http://www.cattlebaronsgala.net/

Giving Hope to East Texas

August 31st, 2009

There are a few organizations which have contributed to the culture of Tyler and East Texas for over a hundred years. One of the most trusted and beloved is the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army was founded as a missionary organization by William and Catherine Booth in 1878. The mission’s goal is to demonstrate the love of Christ to the needy and those without hope. The Army is so named because of the founder’s desire to combat poverty and injustice, as well as spread the gospel. Those ordained in ministry are called officers. The laity or common parishioners are called soldiers. Since its founding the ministry has grown into a world wide organization which operates in one hundred thirteen countries.

The Salvation Army deployed to Tyler Texas in 1897. The facility is named “the Center of Hope” and provides food, housing and job assistance to East Texans who find themselves out of work and or without a place to live. The local programs provide excellent guidelines and structure for those suffering from poverty and addiction and who are seeking to put their lives back in order. The mission provides a Christian based counseling service for those whose lives are in crisis.  The organization preaches adherence to what it calls the five core values, passion, compassion, bravery, uplifting (or being a source of hope), and trustworthiness (as pertains to financial responsibility). Local programs include: disaster relief, emergency services, sheltering, substance abuse counseling and much, much more.

The local Salvation Army sponsors a number of fund raisers every year in order to cover the cost of operation. Events include luncheons, plays, golf tournaments, even a local fashion show.  Nearly all the money raised goes directly to services for the needy. For more information on the Center of Hope and the Salvation Army go to their web site at www.salvationarmytyler.org or call 903-592-4361. They are located at 633 N Broadway Ave in Tyler.
