The Tour of Texas Day Two

March 8th, 2011

Presidio La Bahia in GoliadI have yet to visit the Presidio La Bahia in Goliad on a sunny day, but I guess that’s appropriate given the historical context of the place. The mission / fort is of course the place where Colonel Fannin and his men agreed to an honorable surrender after four days of fighting the Mexican army, only to be unlawfully executed upon the orders of Generalissimo Santa Anna. Today the mission has been repaired and restored to its former beauty. Unfortunately the point of interest is often overshadowed by popular locals like the Alamo. Not to take away from the significance that place; far be it from this Texan! But Goliad is an often overlooked jewel of a stop that should be visited more than it is. It’s both beautiful and significant.

From Goliad we made for the coast. We rode the Port Aransas ferry and headed for Mustang Island State Park. On the way ate from the second major Texas food group, seafood. After seeking local counsel we stopped into a restaurant / bar called Kody’s. The “décor” was… rustic. The food was incredible! Seafood allowed us to check another box on our list of traditional Texas cuisine experienced. Fish planks, shrimp sandwiches, fried oysters, gotta love dining in an ocean front town! After dinner we proceeded to the stop that was both an event and an accommodation.Goliad

An extended family member once wrote on Facebook that they longed for a foreign shore. Well they’re clearly not from Texas! As a young man I have grown up somewhat apologetic about the Texas Gulf Coast. I have often conceded that the sand is inferior to that of other states and beaches. However, over the last few years of visiting our Texas Coast and reading on its history I’ve come to Love it. Its cities have a culture and a mystique all their own. They have survived hurricanes (in Galveston’s case two), pirates, revolution and civil war. They show the characteristics of the American old south, a seaside community, and the American southwest all blended together. This stop was a first in the seven years I’ve been leading these trips. I’ve been to Mustang Island before, but never camping with a group of students, and no I’m not actually crazy. Overall the kids did great. As a class we built a fire on the sand, cooked hot dogs, and camped in tents. They slept till 7:30, got up, broke camp, and we were on the road just in time to avoid soaking in a morning thunder shower. It was a great time. Hopefully future Tours of Texas will include similar visits to state parks.Mustang IslandMustang Island TXTX Ships

Teddy Ruxpin, Tickle Me Elmo and Now… Dance Star Mickey

November 22nd, 2010

Mickey Mouse Dancing Doll Tyler TexasWith Christmas around the corner, and a three year old at home I thought it might be helpful for friends and extended family to express my feelings about new toy which will without a doubt make the list of the all- time most annoying gifts of Christmas past. In the tradition of Teddy Ruxpin and Tickle Me Elmo comes Disney’s latest assault on responsible parenting. Dance Star Mickey has the potential to be even more unbearable than either of its aforementioned predecessors, and that by the way is saying something! I don’t have to warn Moms and Dads that this is a gift other people give your child.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve not been a fan of Disney for some time. As a history teacher I’ve been frequently appalled by students who believed that John Smith and Pocahontas were lovers, Thank you Disney for whoring out our history! Their formulamatic story lines, and insistence on making movies which correspond with their theme park rides, (after the fact mind you), hasn’t helped their cause in my mind. I keep waiting for the cinematic release of “TEA Cups, the Movie!” I will make one exception in my case against Disney, that being for their one franchise with any originality or imagination left. Of course I’m referring to Pixar, their writers and animators are genius.

The fact is I’ve never quite understood why the entertainment giant has made such a point of making Mickey Mouse it’s sort of, flagship character. I mean, when was the last time the marsupial stared in a full length, feature film? I can only assume that Dance Star Mickey has come about as a result of dance craze television shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “Dancing with the Stars.” My little guy is a great kid, but he already knows how to make noise. The last thing I need right now is a stuffed toy that makes him more efficient at his noise making. And by the way, isn’t the great thing about stuffed toys the fact that they are silent? That and they also double as a pillow.

Elmo DollOf course this toy will find a huge market; kids will love it, especially if they see the rest of the family watching dance shows on television. But then kids will generally enjoy whatever you happen to get them, provided you do better than socks, or the notorious pink bunny of “A Christmas Carol” fame. My advice is this: skip the dancing mouse this year, and tell grandpa and grandma to do the same. Tell them… I know tell them you’ll leave out the mousetraps on Christmas Eve night. I’m betting you’ll have a much more peaceful New Year!

The Villages in Tyler Texas

June 15th, 2010

It was around eleven and I was sneaking back into my bedroom where my son happened to be sleeping. After an enjoyable night I knew I should take the opportunity to do some writing. Feeling guilty, I glanced at my computer, and watched as the pictures on my screen saver slid by. “I should write for awhile but… I’m so tired.” Ok so my fatigue won out and I went to bed. Now I’m struggling to remember all the things that were passing through my mind as I drifted off to sleep last night, and only half heartedly wishing I’d forced myself to start writing. While I realize how annoying their national ad campaign is, our local Villages resort is really incredible.

I remember some years ago it was just a few time share houses, a couple of pools and a boat ramp. But in the past few years in has grown into an exceptional place to stay or just visit and play. They now offer mini-golf, tennis, basketball, a great club house, several incredible swimming pools and even a series of indoor waterslides. (This short list doesn’t really scratch the surface of what’s available). Along Lake Palestine there are a series of beautiful condos. And the marina offers easy access for boaters and fisherman. One great feature of the resort is the easy availability they offer to the community. It’s not necessary to live within the park, or own a timeshare to take advantage of the opportunities they have. Memberships are certainly nice to have, but patrons can also pay a small admission fee to enjoy at least some of the amenities.

Last night my little boy and I joined members of my extended family on an outing to the Villages pool. He had a wonderful time, beyond what even I expected. He played in the children’s pool running in and out of the fountains and even swam around a bit with me in the deeper section. This is a terrific facility and a great way for East Texans, Tylerites, and out of towners to cool off. For those interested in the Tyler Villages, and the different activities available there, visit the web site at www.waterparkatthevillages.com, or for a clearer more user friendly list of what’s offered (at least that’s what I thought), as well as other attractions in our area, go to www.silverleafresorts.com/resorts/the-villages.
