Vacation Bible School In Tyler Texas

June 21st, 2011

Tyler TX vacation Bible schoolWe here in Tyler are in the middle of Vacation Bible School (VBS), season right now. Churches all over Tyler are either just beginning, or just finishing their summer activities for area children. Summer programs for the kiddos have become culturally ingrained not on only in East Texas but around the country. I remember attending VBS programs as a child, sometimes at churches other than my own. Of course VBS is essentially a week long Sunday school class that runs from about nine in the morning until noon, (depending on the program). Such programs are popular with parents who are always on the lookout for summer activities for their kids. Church programs are great because they’re safe, secure, and the curriculum is of course formative for the student’s faith. They also have the side benefit of allowing parents a few hours of peace and productivity.

Vacation Bible School is usually a healthy mix of activities and lessons. One of the most popular curriculums this year is called “Pandamania.” Each day’s lesson takes a classic biblical story and draws out a simple theme. The five central stories are as follows: The Creation Story, Elijah vs. the Prophets of Baal, Jonah Runs from God, Jesus Dies and Comes Back to life, and God Gives Hannah a Baby. Numerous churches in town are using the Pandamania curriculum, including; Calvary Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church, Pollard United Methodist Church,Trinity Lutheran and Christ Episcopal Church. I may well be leaving someone out, if so I apologize. Pandamania, like most VBS programs is doctrinally non- sectarian in order to allow as a many different denominations as possible to use it.

There are programs running all through June and into July, all over Tyler and East Texas. My personal fav is Christ Episcopal Church’s, which runs all next week (June 27th through July 1st), from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon. For more information on the Pandamania program go to

http://pandamania.group.com/ . For more on Christ Church’s program go to their children’s ministry page at http://www.christchurchtyler.org/childrens.htm .

Clicks Live in Tyler TX

June 14th, 2011

Clicks Live
Clicks has been a part of Tyler for years as a local bar with a pool hall and venue for live music. The concentration on live music aspect of the bar has definitely been gradually increasing over the years taking Clicks from an average musky dive bar where the local pool leagues meet to the only place to play a concert in Tyler that isn’t inside a church. Clicks Live has a 30 square foot stage with enough audio equipment to accommodate the volume of nationally recognized bands such as Drowning Pool, and House of Pain as well as local bands.

Clicks Live has become a collective of Tyler’s variety of colorful social groups, since Tyler has such a limited selection of stages to offer bands you end up with the young and the old, or the Nu Metal crowd mingling with dub step fans, all drinking under the same roof. There’s a solidarity that comes with a place you can watch your friends perform and where you can dance to your favorite music.

Clicks Live has the same dark and bustling atmosphere you would expect from a night club, in fact you could consider it a club partially considering that when bands aren’t preforming there’s always a dance floor and bar music to get people moving. But when you don’t feel like moving it on the dance floor Clicks Live has a long bar in which to sit and enjoy a drink with plenty of room for the number of people that show up to Clicks on average.

Clicks Live, as it’s name suggests, began as a pool hall and bar primarily which is still around today and playing a part in keeping the customers at Clicks Live happily entertained with the classic seizure sport no bar is complete without.

Of course a major limitation to Clicks Live is the inherent fact that it is a business first and foremost and while it is known for the music preformed on its stage you can be sure the musical styles will be majorly reflective of what is popular in East Texas and what is appealing to the management, while not every single band is cringe inducing nu-metal and the like, most of the band that preform their definitely are not anything to write the label about.

However, in an appeal to good taste Clicks Live does occasionally venture into the shallow end of alternative styles, booking talented local artists who are hungry for the opportunity to play some surf rock or maybe a little synth rock for an audience that may be smaller in number than most but has also been waiting a long while to see bands like Knifight without having to drive hours to a major city to reach the venue. But “How does Clicks Live provide an adequate location for professional musicians?” you might ask.

Clicks Live is more than prepared for the requirements needed to house serious music, they have a professional sound booth consisting of a 40 Channel Soundcraft Mixing Console, a 32 Band Dual Equalizer, DBX Drive Rack, a Presonus 8 Channel Compressor / Gate, and a Reverb Unit with Tap Delay.

When it comes to giving the music rumbling depth Clicks Live is ready with four TurboSound TXD218 Dual 18″ Enclosures powered by two Yamaha PS7000 Amplifiers poised to handle the Dubbest of Step and the Hippest of Hop while the high end will be covered with four TurboSound TXD252 Dual 15″ Enclosures amplified by four QSC 2500’s to bring an all around excellent concert experience.

Clicks Live uses four monitors to ensure the musicians can preform to their best capability. The stage at Clicks measures 30 ft. wide by 30 ft. long and 3 ft. high with 16 ft. between the stage and ceiling and an 8’x8′ 18″ high drum riser a band playing at Clicks can be sure of all of the booking info before hand and not have to worry about any incompatibility between their performance and the venue.

Clicks Live also has a fantastic patio area with a fire pit and plenty of seating, although you will mostly find people on their feet huddled into smoking circles and waiting for the next band to start rather than lounging in the lawn furniture. Clicks Live has even brought entertainment in the form of the musical arcade game Rockband to the party and for a few quarters two people can have their own jam session on top of the already raging noise of the bar and over the music already being played in a confusing and redundant form of virtual karaoke that honestly would probably be better off if it was a classic arcade game like street fighter or something.

Clicks is not only a hot spot for the many music scenes of East Texas but also for the pool and poker scenes, as free Texas Hold Em’ games are hosted on mondays and wednesdays with games starting at 8pm and 10pm, while the APA pool leagues meet Sunday afternoon for 8 ball, Monday evening for 9 ball, and Tuesday evening for 8 ball games. Even though Clicks may not always have the cream of crop when it comes to bands, actually it may be pretty rare for a decent international band to play the venue but it’s still definitely worth keeping your eye on their lineup.

If you are lucky one of your favorite bands just might stumble upon this little bar show, perhaps you enjoy the heavily metal styles of The Sword but would never expect them to really play a show in Tyler, well think again chump because The Sword is playing their legendary black metal at Clicks Live on June 13, a night that will most surely be a storm of metal the likes of which Tyler has never seen. Clicks Live has become a mildly eclectic bar and will hopefully continue this trend with an open mind and good sense of music and style.

Texas Job Growth Leads the Nation

June 3rd, 2011

I read a report yesterday or the day before, confirming what most of us living in Texas strongly suspected. Our state is well ahead of the curve in terms of job growth. The cities of Dallas and Ft.Worth rank above the rest of the nation in terms of job growth. Houston is a close second. The jobless rate in the metroplex is down slightly from eight percent to roughly seven and a half, admittedly a small decline, but a good one considering the national average is nine percent. There are a number of ways to crunch the numbers, obviously, but in terms of both population and job growth Texas is definitely better off than most of our sister states; far better off than some. I’m not suggesting that times are exactly good here, just better.

The category of growth I found most interesting, both for me personally and for Tyler, comes in the area of Education and Health Care. These two fields seem to be growing albeit slowly, with an interesting stipulation: it includes private as opposed to public schools. The article I read cites 6.4 percent growth in the Ft. Worth area, and 5.2 in the Dallas area. While these numbers relate specifically to the metroplex, this category is of course the largest field of employment in East Texas. With the public schools in Texas experience big cutbacks, private schools are growing, and hiring new staff. While its admittedly anecdotal evidence, I can attest to this, as I recently accepted a position at a new private school in our area.

I think the relative health of the Texas economy comes as a result of a generally pro-business administration, and a lack of state income tax, which encourages immigration from states like California (and others), that are incredibly overburdened by regulation and taxation. Incidentally, the Bureau of Labor put San Francisco near the bottom of the job growth list with -0.3 percent growth when compared to last year.

Members of the Mineola Sex Ring Released from Jail

June 2nd, 2011

Mineola sex ring released from jailThere really is no justice, even in East Texas. I’m referring of course to the guilty plea that allowed the rest of the Mineola pedophiles to be released on the grounds of time served. Excuse me but, there isn’t enough time! The report I read stated that judge Skeen and the prosecution didn’t have the heart to put the child victims through another round of excruciating testimony. This is a compelling argument to me. I can’t imagine having sit through the account myself, let alone live through it! What really sticks in my craw is that these worthless defendants are actually profiting by their horrific actions by holding the threat of telling their story over the heads of the children and their families, thereby abusing them all over again! I was not one of the Tylerites upset when the court brought rather severe sentences for the church arsonists last year. But it seems now that they were condemned by their defense’s inability to black mail the victims and their families with the threat of making them repeatedly relive their crimes. As I say, I understand the judge’s reasoning in this case, but it doesn’t make the result any easier to take.

The sickies who were released this past week, each pled guilty to third degree felony injury to a child in exchange for time served. The most recent releases were of Jamie Pittman, Patrick Kelly, and Rebecca Pittman on Friday, May 27th. As I understand it Shauntel Mayo and Jimmy Sones remain in Jail and Sheila Sones was released the day before the others. Only Dennis Pittman is serving time for his conviction, but of course he has appealed his decision. Check out the mug shots and remember the faces parents, once a pedophile always a pedophile. For their sakes, I certainly hope these defendants remain friends, because they’re not going to find any new ones in Tyler or East Texas.
