The Tyler Marathon, Bringing a Little Excercise to East Texas

January 27th, 2010

The City of Tyler Texas welcomes you to the first annual Tyler Rose marathon, half marathon and 5k. With the idea that Tyler is kind of the picturesque garden destination in Texas with all of the azaleas, trails, and roses it was picked as a new marathon event. The marathon will wind through streets, sidewalks, wooded areas, and finish up in the azalea trail. This is really needed considering how bad the Azalea trail has become over the years. At one point back in the 80’s you would have athletes flying in from Africa to run the Azalea Trail but now all Tyler gets is a unique pack of teenagers wearing the same shirt from a ministry or two in town. Hey a lot of people running the Azalea Trail from the same organization is great but without those great groups like Teen Mania running the 10 and 5k we would only have a handful of people left running it. Tyler Marathon

So this marathon event represents a revitalization in the Tyler Texas running community and will hopefully create something like we used to have back in the 80’s with the Azalea trail. Tyler really needs another serious racing event
and I hope this one takes off and becomes popular. In order for the Tyler marathon to become popular we need to get the word out so be sure to send out tweets and facebook messages to your friends and let them know about www.tylermarathon.com. They can read more about the event in order to plan for it this October. It is still a long ways off to give you plenty of time to train for it.

Many of the details regarding the marathon are still in development stages but it is going to happen so start preparing now. Marathons are not something that can be done without training first. I attempted to run a marathon once at the White Rock Marathon in Dallas and got to about mile 18 when I had to stop because of a lack of preparation and I had just past the donut whole and fresh milk booth.

The website says the event is being produced by Mellew Productions. I have never heard of this company but I am glad they are heading this up. After reviewing their website I found out they specialize in creating fun and festive events in cities across the US.

The Tyler marathon course has not been publicized at this time as the production company awaits approval from the city of Tyler.

Mellew will plan the whole event so that food, prizes, T-shirts, surroundings, the running course, volunteers, and staff are all coordinated to make it as fun and exciting as a marathon can be while making a profit. Isn’t lack of profit why Tyler’s Azalea trail became a miserable failure over the years? Maybe this is our town’s needed turnaround for exciting running events once again. Mellew is based out of Richardson Texas and some of their services are listed below.

Services include:

New Run/Walk Events:

· Event creation and design with event day management.
· Designing effective sponsorship proposals
· Assistance in finding host site for the event
· Create businesslike structure to insure profitability
· Produce brochure, web site, and T-shirt design
· Direct all promotional activities
· Provide all assistance and advice to create a fun and exciting event.

WIC Low Income Government Assistance

January 26th, 2010

WIC

WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children and is a program designed to help pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children under 5 with nutrition. There is a daily clinic in Tyler and mobile clinics at other locations in our area once a week too.

To qualify for benefits, you have to live in Texas and have a low income for the number of people in your household. Benefits are given after a financial assessment has been made. There are details on the WIC website and you can phone the WIC hotline to find out if your family is eligible (details on www.dshs.state.tx.us/wic)

They have information in both English and all materials are also available in Spanish.

In my experience, the ladies who run the WIC program are really helpful. It would seem that this is not the easiest of programs to administer but they do it with a smile. We received help when I was pregnant and had a child under five. We were given a health assessment and nutritional advice as well as the food package. This came in the form of a ‘gift card’ which could be redeemed at most local superstores. Specific food types and in some cases, brands, are listed for you to purchase. You receive an information sheet and a video to watch to help you get started and in most supermarkets the products you can choose are labelled ‘WIC’ to help you as you shop.

At one of my WIC appointments the nutritionist identified that my daughter was iron deficient. I guess I wasn’t surprised as she is a terrible eater! But I was glad to have all sorts of ideas, suggestions and recipes to help. She was also given a children’s book on each visit which is I think is great. Any help with encouraging literacy has to be good for kids in East Texas.

We had milk, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, bread, rice, beans, fruit and veg. It was a real help to our family budget. I was also offered breast feeding support and even an electric pump to aid feeding. I have to say I am really impressed that they would spend the time and money to help Moms breastfeed. We all know it is the best start for a baby to have it’s mother’s milk but it is not always an easy choice to make and sustain. Any support is really valuable. It was also good to know that my baby was on target on the growth chart. I continued to receive a food package as I was nursing him and once I began to feed him solids, I was given formula and baby food and cereal on my card each month.

I think it is well worth applying for the WIC program if your income is low. You do need to prove your income twice a year and visit the clinic at least every three months but that is a small price to pay for the assistance you receive. And don’t worry, there is no stigma attached to receiving WIC as there are so many families in East Texas who receive it. It is not just for single parents or those out of work. A lot of families here are living on a single income because Moms bravely chose to stay at home with their children. In this community there are also a large proportion of families who have lots of children or extended family living with them and so are eligible for benefits even though their income is not low. I have always been treated with respect at the Lindale WIC office and have no hesitation in recommending their services to others.

Church burnings unite Tyler Christian community in prayer

January 25th, 2010

The recent church burnings familiar to what happened in Alabama several years ago has united the Tyler TX Christian community in prayer. Churches from multiple denominations came to Bergfeld Park to pray and show support to the Tyler community effected by these burnings. The reaction by many was one of anger, shock, and yet trust in God that somehow God will use this for His glory. Athens Grace Community Church

My friend Caleb was there taking pictures of the event for a friend. Sometime after taking the pictures an ATF agent approached him thinking he fit the profile of someone at the Church of Christ Scientist church fire. The ATF agent was mistaken but as any good ATF agent should do he was following every possible lead and profile match. It is actually quite impressive that the ATF agents were at the church fire prayer rally and it shows their zealousness in bringing an end to this violent destruction of Tyler churches.

Using the word violent to describe these crimes is not too strong of language. A church fire could easily kill someone especially in the likely event that the church is near an old house or has a parish attached to it. Someone could easily be killed living in or near a church. If there isn’t an operable fire alarm in the nearby house or church building these lunatics could kill someone in their sleep. How do you think you would feel if your vandalism caused a baby or innocent child to burn alive or die from smoke inhalation? Something tells me that maybe these criminals have not thought of some of the possibilities that could occur while burning buildings.

Thinking back about one recent fire involving in East Texas landmark building that wasn’t even a church it makes me wonder if there isn’t so much of a desire to burn churches as more of a desire to create attention. No one is sure if all of these fires are connected but the fact that not every recent suspicious fire was a church makes me wonder if the arsonists have continued along the path of church burnings because they like the attention that it receives? These are only my opinions on what might be the motive of these Tyler TX church fires and I am sure the authorities are exploring these ideas and many more as they receive leads.

The authorities investigating these crimes have said that many leads are beginning to trickle in and they are using these to hone in on possible suspects. They have not yet revealed if they believe it was the result of one or more people but over the next several weeks this will probably be revealed as the evidence is researched where it was sent in San Fransisco.

Authorities are now connecting a church fire in Corsicana TX back in 2009 with these recent burnings and looking for similarities. There is no ruling yet if the fire in 2009 was done by the same people but they are looking for any possible connection. The authorities still have not narrowed down a suspect but the community is on high alert in Tyler and there is not a day that does not go by that I do not fail to see many police and marshals on the roads.

An official tip line has been established that will be manned 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The Church Arson Hotline numbers are: 903-939-6169 or 903-939-6172  and don’t forget there is a $10,000 reward for evidence about who may have done the arson.

East Texas Wifi Internet Service Provider

Choices Among Internet Providers in Tyler Texas

If you are like me and live out in the country you don’t have as many choices as someone living in the city limits of Tyler. There are a lot of things that I don’t have the privilege of doing without paying more money such as having a fast internet connection and going to the Tyler Public Library. Both of these things I will end up paying much more for than the average Tyler Texas joe living in the city limits. For those inside the city you can go with Suddenlink cable internet or AT&T highspeed internet service.

There are now even more internet options available for those in and outside the city of Tyler Texas than there has been for many years. There are these highspeed wireless PC cards offered by all the major cell phone carriers that allow you to plug a PC card into your laptop or desktop computer and have a fairly fast wireless internet service. The downside to the PC card wireless access is if you go over your usage limit you could be charged as high as 25 cents per megabyte. Those megabytes go pretty quick especially if you watch Youtube videos or download software.

Best Deal On Wireless Internet PC Card Service In Tyler

As far as cell phone wireless internet PC card service the best deal in Tyler is probably with Sprint although their coverage is spotty out in the country. The fastest and pretty good coverage in and outside the city of Tyler is with Verizon. Verizon will charge you 25 cents per megabyte if you go over your usage limit which is why I no longer use this company. Sprint only charges 5 cents per megabyte if you go over their limit however they also have an unlimited usage plan for a little more money.

Which Wireless Internet PC Card I Prefer The Most

AT&T’s wireless internet PC card goes by the name aircard and offers great speeds and coverage in the city of Tyler although the coverage gets a little spotty depending on where in the country you may be living in Smith County. Overall I prefer the speed of Verizon wireless internet PC card, the price and coverage of the Sprint wireless PC card, and enjoy the speed and coverage of AT&T’s aircard provided you use it within the city of Tyler and not out in the country.

Best Choice For Wireless Internet in Tyler Texas

For an even faster wireless internet outside the city limits of Tyler I recommend going with a wifi service that broadcasts from tower antennas. There is a company by the name of East Texas Wifi that I use and I love the service, low latency and internet speed they offer. There is another wireless internet company that competes with them called DCTexas Internet and they also boast some very fast speeds and low latency. Low latency simply means that any downloads you do will be very quick. If you were to compare the latency of a satellite internet service as you would get with Hughes net it would be a night and day difference. For instance, if you attempted to watch a funny youtube video with Hughes net you might as well queue it up and go eat a sandwich before it will be ready. With East Texas Wifi you will be able to watch the movie immediately almost as if you turned on TV to watch a show you like.

Stay Away From Hughes.net Satelite Internet Service!

WARNING!!! If you live in Tyler Texas or around the area avoid Hughes net at all costs! They will have you commit to a contract while wireless internet service companies like East Texas wifi will put you on a month to month plan. Once you are locked into the Hughes net contract you will quickly discover that the internet service is very slow and reminiscent of old dial up service back in the olden days. You will pay a high price for this lousy internet service too. It simply is not worth it and everyone I have spoken with about Hughesnet in Tyler have told me just how much they hate their internet service.

Fellowship of Prairie Creek Church

January 20th, 2010

2401 South Main Street
Lindale, TX 75771-7704
(903) 882-7597

Fellowship of Prairie Creek Church in Lindale Texas had a fire started in the back chapel at 7:30 a.m. this morning. The police said it appeared that someone broke in from the back of the building. Fortunately this church fire was quickly contained and the church will be ok. This represents the 8th church in East Texas to be burned and the 9th church in the state since January 1 2010.

I wonder if some of the church burnings are copy cat crimes and what exactly is going on here. Whoever is doing this must not have a job and is zealous about going after churches. If anyone has any information about who may be doing this please comment below.
