Green Acres Bowl in Tyler… Again!

May 10th, 2011

I went for my once a year bowling trip this past weekend, at Green Acres Bowl, and no it has nothing to do with Tyler’s mega church of the same name. (Does that sound like a slight; because it wasn’t intended to as one. It’s just that the church is huge, and it’s easy to assume that any business with “Green Acres” in the name is somehow connected to it. For some reason however, drawing attention to a churches size, large or small, can be a touchy prospect. Too large and people think you’re a social club, too small and you’re a cult). Sorry, again I digress. While reading on the bowling alley I discovered there are about as many opinions on it, as there are of its Baptist namesake.

First off let me say that the staff was really helpful, a bit overly protective I guess, but really very nice, and they generally took care of all our needs. Now I’m not a good bowler… at all. But I had good time nonetheless. My son was back and forth dropping his ball and retrieving another almost before the first one reached the pins. And it was like that all morning. Suffice it to say, he had a terrific time. The business has changed an awful lot over the years. I read some reviews that must have been written about the time former Vice President Gore was first establishing the internet, because the Green Acres bowling alley hasn’t looked like they described it in over twenty years!

On the plus side, the establishment is neat and clean and relatively inexpensive. It’s also a great place to take the fam, particularly when the weathers bad. If there’s a down side, it’s that there’s no bar or place to purchase food or drinks. But the facility’s not equipped for those added services, and I realize that’s exactly what many Tylerites like most about the place anyway. Our city has a strangely paradoxical and frankly, inconsistent view on the use of adult beverages, even if that use is moderate. Instead, maybe pull into Braum’s, for Ice cream and a cherry lime-aid prior to heading over to bowl a few frames. At any rate, if you’ve not been to Green Acres Bowl in a while, I recommend checking it out, particularly as summer starts to heats up. It’s cheap fun in a cool, family friendly, environment.

Oakhurst Golf Course in Tyler TX

March 22nd, 2011

Oakhurst Golf Course
Oakhurst Golf Course is a non-membership golf course in Tyler TX. The clothing requirements are no jeans although shorts and slacks are allowed and a collared shirt.

The course is groomed and laid out well. They have enough golf carts for several large parties. The difficulty level is about medium with a good selection of holes with water and sand traps. I thought the management were professional and courteous and the bar and grill offered beers, drinks, snacks and food.

I look forward to going back to this clean professionally run golf course off Hwy 69 in Tyler Texas.

Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches

February 9th, 2011

Jimmy Johns Tyler TexasJimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches has opened a restaurant off of Troop in Tyler. I have seen this restaurant for a while but I have finally had the opportunity to eat there. The set up of the restaurant is very unique with the sarcastic signs, modern style, and open kitchen. I would always laugh when I drove by and saw the neon sign that read “Free Smells”, but when you walked in the store you knew right away what they are talking about. The great smells of freshly cook bread is the first thing that greets you as you walk into the restaurant. The kitchen is open and the sandwiches that you order are prepared right in front of you so that you are ensured that your sandwiches are made fresh. The menu is all the great inventions of Jimmy John himself, with the exception of a few friends and family. All of the sandwiches have different selections of fresh bread, meats, cheeses, sauces, and vegetables.

Jimmy John’s slogan “no shirts, no shoes, no problem; we deliver.” is a great way to express the convenience of their delivery services. They can cater to any size party, including sandwich trays or large subs, chips, drinks, cookies, and even pickle spears. The food is made fresh and delivered to your door or business. You can make orders online or by calling into the store.

Jimmy John’s restaurant has a great menu of tasty and fresh sandwiches. The great atmosphere and polite service makes the restaurant a great place to catch up with friends, go on a lunch date, or have a lunch business meeting. Jimmy John’s restaurant is a new kind of deli here in East Texas, and with the open kitchen you can see and taste the freshness of their sandwiches.

BJ’s restaurant coming soon!

January 31st, 2011

BJ's Restaurant in Tyler TX
I have gone to Houston quite a few times over the last couple years. Every time we have gone to Houston we eat at the BJ’s restaurant. I am excited to see that BJ’s is being built in Tyler. Tyler really does not need another restaurant, since there are basically only restaurants in Tyler, but I am very excited about BJ’s being built. The BJ’s restaurants in Houston are both restaurant and a brewery. Because of the fact that Tyler is a “dry county” this restaurant will not have a brewery and will just is a restaurant. I guess this fact will be a let down for some people, but the great variety and quality of food more than makes up for that fact. As you browse the large menu your mouth can not help but water from the great selection of food. The restaurant serves some of the best foods made with the perfect twist, no matter what your favorite food is (pasta, salad, sandwiches, steak, pizza, burgers, or giant stuffed potatoes) you will most likely find a dish at BJ’s restaurant that you will love. Just because they will not have the brewery does not mean that the restaurant will not be serving any alcohol. BJ’s restaurant will have their full wine, beer, cocktail, and specialty drinks.
BJ's in Tyler
The BJ’s restaurants also have ordering online! If you are like me, the only reason you really do not like to order take out, is because you have to sit in the restaurant for so long waiting for your food to be ready. By the time you food is done, you may as well ordered and ate at the restaurant; you would of got home around the same time. With the ordering online, you just go to the website and click on a location, browse the whole menu and put in your order. By the time you leave your home and get to the restaurant your food will be ready to take home. This is such a great and easy idea.

I can not wait for this restaurant to open. The construction is going up fast. I know that it will be a huge hit in Tyler, but even Tyler crowds will not keep from enjoying the great food at BJ’s.
