Tyler Christian Heritage School

January 17th, 2010

Tyler Christian Heritage School is located off Dixie Drive close to the airport. The school is a non-profit ministry that was started by YWAM (Youth with a Mission) because they saw the need for children to learn biblical principles at the same time help them to be educated in a Christian way. Christian Heritage School is an amazing school that was pioneered in 1980 by Jim and Barbara Kilkenny. Jim and Barbara both had been teaching in public schools before starting Tyler Christian Heritage. They saw the need was great for truth being taught to the children, but more than them loving education, they love God and His word. In my opinion, they are truly heroes because they decided a long time ago to sacrifice their wants and needs so they could serve God and help spread the gospel of truth through a private school.

Their vision is to teach the children how to reason from God’s word and apply it to their everyday life. They offer kindergarten through 12Th grade. I myself went to the school for awhile and to be truthful I did not appreciate what was being taught because I was too immature and stubborn to realize the things that they were teaching me. I never once thought that there was a difference to what was being taught in private school and public school, not until I was older and left the school. When I entered the real world I regretted not taking education seriously and thinking that school was just boring. I now see that Christian Heritage School is a blessing. All the staff that tried to help me in school…didn’t do it for money but for the love of God. They make no money off teaching. They are doing it because they love education and see the importance of teaching based on godly principles. If I had to do it over, I would take every moment seriously and know that they truly care about my well being and the choices I make in life.

The staff knows that if they get you to reason from the truth you will know how to self govern and won’t need someone in life to tell you what to do. You will long to do what is right on your own if you can reason from the truth. The school provides a safe environment where children can learn about God, and all the subjects that He created. It might be a shock for some to realize that God was the originator of all the subjects that we now learn in school. Unfortunately, today in public schools they rob you of the truth that God was the creator of the universe and that without Him nothing exists. Christian Heritage teaches the right morals in life. The school also has many things to do with sports. The offer volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis and track. They welcome home schooled children to come and play in any of the sport activities. The school is ready to work with your children and family, depending on your circumstances. They will always give people a chance and their heart is to not turn anyone away. Just like public school, Christian Heritage does have rules to go by to ensure the safety and well being of your children.

Some parents have always been worried whether their children would get a proper education. Many of the students that graduated from Christian Heritage School have gone on to pursue additional education in a junior college and eventually earn a bachelor degree. Going to Christian Heritage School won’t hinder your child from being the person they want to become or accomplishing their goals in life. It will only prepare them to be better equipped for life. So rest assured that if you choose to send your children to Christian Heritage that they would get an excellent education and make long lasting friendships.

Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church

January 12th, 2010

A church can have many angles from which it wants to impact its congregation. How many often take the route of challenge? Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church does. Pastor James McMillan of PRUMC has a wonderful way of making the scriptures real and applicable. Every week he comes to the pulpit with fresh revelation of who God is and how we are to know him in deep personal ways. PRUMC is very traditional in its ways but at the same time has an edge that some people might be looking for. There are three services, 8:15; 10:00; 11:15, the first two have traditional worship and the last has contemporary worship. The band that plays is very talented and certainly puts on a small show. Even though this church is small you may easily feel as though you are a part of something bigger.

Something readily unique is that this church is 150 years old. It started on another piece of property not too far from its current place on Dixie drive and HWY 64. The church has been at this location for the past 70 years (give or take a few) and has no plan on moving any time soon. Strike up a conversation with any of the youth and you will soon find that most of their relatives as far back as their great great grandmother’s have gone to this methodist church. It is quite well rooted! As intimidating as that may sound, for being a community to break into, it is quite the opposite. The people are very welcoming, attentive and genuinely caring. This congregation is eager to help each other, support each other and encourage each other. Just this last fall the whole church got together to have a Tyler Junior College fall kick off and served food to the students and played music in the streets. The neighborhood was full of conversation, music and love. It was quite the evening!

They also have a very good youth program in the first and second services. The older youth (Junior High and High School) meet at least once a week, they eat together, play games and have a time of focusing on God’s word. The Young Adults (college age) are encouraged to be there with the youth and also spend quite a bit of time together, being there for each other.

Right now the church is being challenged to read the Bible in 90 days. They are on the second week and are going strong. They are meeting in small groups every week to discuss the revelations from God about his word. Pastor James has done a really good job portraying God’s heart and intent as he has studied Abraham and shared it with the congregation. There is quite a sense of reality to the scriptures that he isn’t afraid to deliver!

Wednesday nights at 6:00 this family meets together to eat dinner and enjoy each other. They serve wonderful food and only ask a simple donation of whatever you have when you come. Family Night Life is the place to be for community of Wednesdays.

PRUMC is well worth your try to see what they have going on. Check it out!
