I love introducing new comers to surprisingly good eateries. Years ago, while I was living and teaching in St. Paul Minnesota, I returned home with some of my co-workers (including my administrator) for a Teacher’s conference. As any proud Tylerite in the know would, I took my fellow teachers to some of my favorite haunts, particularly Taqueria el Lugar. My boss was so impressed he delayed our return trip to St. Paul just long enough to get in one more visit to the “Best Mexican restaurant he’d ever experienced.”
For years I’ve enjoyed taking guests to Taqueria el Lugar, usually the Gentry location, and watched their reactions as we pulled up at the modest local and found some of the best genuine, Mexican food they’d ever had. Over the years the family owned business has expanded to numerous locals around the city.
Well, I took an out of town friend, to one of my all time favorite Tyler restaurants today. This visit was to the newest installment right down on the square. The location is ideal, and actually seems like it should have been open for years. I trust that the professionals who work on the square will keep the local legend open for many years.
Today’s visit wasn’t like the one I had years ago however. It’s not that the food wasn’t good. It’s still great, although I must agree with one of my friends who noted they went a little light on the cheese. But that may have been the particular day. The main difference is that the price has really gone up. I’m assuming that has something to do with the need to pay for the new locations. Of course, part of reason my experience was lessened may have been the height of my own expectations.
For a long time el Lugar has been a big part of my summer rituals. I capped off a lot days at the lake with cheap and delicious “number sevens.” Well Tyler has changed and so have my summers. I still plan on the occasional trip to el Lugar, but it will probably not be the staple of my diet that it used to be.

Weight loss in Tyler, Texas: Kick the Coke habit!
Soft drinks on their own can be a nice treat every once in a while. It is when they become a part of your every day diet that you get in trouble. A 12 ounce can of soda contains 150 empty calories and 9 teaspoons of sugar. Considering that the USDA recommends only 12 teaspoons of sugar for a well balanced 2,200 calorie per day diet, that doesn’t leave much room for sugar from other sources. Additionally, studies seem to suggest that consuming soft drinks daily increase the rate of fat storage even though your solid food calorie intake may not change.
Perhaps the thing that is most surprising, and quite alarming actually, is that by simply eliminating one soft drink from your diet daily you could lose up to 30 pounds in a year without any other changes in your lifestyle! That seems to be good motivation to leave the Tyler, Texas soda vending machines alone for a while, doesn’t it? The next time you need a little refreshment, reach for a bottle of water instead. Aside from eliminating the empty calories, your body will benefit from being properly hydrated.
If you find you simply must have a little flavor, squeeze a lemon or orange wedge into your water. No, it won’t be as sweet as your beloved soft drink, but that is kind of the point. Many people find that after they have eliminated soft drinks for a while, they cannot drink them because of how sweet they are.

The Lap-Band surgical procedure for weight loss is a surprisingly simple yet revolutionary form of bariatric surgery designed for people who are at least 100 pounds overweight. Rather than removing all except a small portion of the stomach or stapling like traditional bariatric surgery, the Lap-Band system works by placing a band around the stomach to control how much a patient is able to eat at one time, as well as helping the patient to stay fuller longer. Furthermore, the Lap-Band is available in 2 sizes with a wide range of adjustable settings that allow for a patient and their doctor to achieve the perfect size for each unique situation.
Although the Lap-Band procedure is much less invasive than traditional bariatric surgery, it is still surgery and must be performed by a qualified Tyler, Texas lap band doctor. The procedure is usually done laparoscopically, oftentimes on an outpatient basis, and generally takes only about one hour to complete. There are much fewer risks involved with the Lap-Band surgery than with other methods for surgical weight loss, but there are still risks. It is a good idea for patients to discuss these risks with their Tyler, Texas physician before deciding if the Lap-Band surgery for weight loss is the right course of action.
As effective as Lap-Band surgery for weight loss in Tyler, Texas is, one must still adhere to a set of special rules for diet in order to keep the weight off. Any program will fail if not followed properly.
