The Shed Cafe in Edom

  I don’t know whether or not we’ve ever written about the Shed in Edom. But being that I had lunch there today, and enjoyed it, I thought make certain we hadn’t missed the boat on this one. For those that don’t know, Edom is another town located between Tyler and Chandler. It’s long been a little arts and antiques community. In fact a visit to The Shed, or its cross the street rival the Edom Bakery and Grill, bears out the truth of that assertion. The town is a haven for old hippies, artists, cowboys, motorcyclists and even big city sophisticates, all of whom eat at the aforementioned establishments, which help make Edom worthy of its place on the map.

Legend has it, (or at least it’s been reported to me), that The Shed and The Edom bakery and Grill, are owned and operated by rival members of the same family and are in an only partially friendly competition. Each eatery has its devotees but The Shed has been in business for more than thirty five years, and seems to command greater reputation. I can’t really comment on the Bakery’s menu since I have yet to try it. Perhaps when I get around to visiting I’ll consider allowing for equal time. I have on the other hand, visited The Shed on a couple of occasions and feel comfortable offering a rudimentary report. It’s good.

Ok, so it’s better than good. It wouldn’t have lasted for more than a quarter century in Edom if it wasn’t. The menu consists largely of staple southern and “home –style” cooking. I especially recommend their breakfast menu, with particular attention to their biscuits and gravy.  The ambiance, (which may itself be a bit too sophisticated a term), is authentic country and when coupled with the unique cross- section clientele, and the town setting, the décor is a perfect match.  One caveat, The Shed is always busy. Texas Is More and More Becoming a Baseball State

I apologize in advance for the gratuitous use of a cliché, but the times, they are a changing, specifically when it comes to the sports culture in our state. Texas has always been staunchly a football state. Football (particularly high school football) is often said to be the religion of choice in Texas. Movies and television series have been dedicated to the only slightly exaggerated fervor of our devotees, and while I don’t foresee any mass conversions per se, there are rumblings of a new faith sweeping the state. That “new” faith is baseball, and its temples have for years, largely consisted of nominally attended, dusty diamonds and city parks where youngsters and weekend warriors have practiced their faith in the heat and relative anonymity of our southwestern summers.

Oh sure I realize that both the Rangers and Astros have been keeping the sacramental flame alive for many years, but their influence outside their immediate communities has never been so widespread as it is now. I’ve been a Rangers fan for quite a long time. In the early years I watched mostly as a substitute for the sport I really loved. But as I moved away and my friends moved to the Dallas, our reunions began more and more to take place at the ballpark in Arlington. I found myself joining a much larger community, and not merely the Rangers’ community but the larger one called baseball.

Since my confirmation, the Rangers have had more down years than up, until of course the last few seasons. For me, the outcome of the Rangers’ first World Series appearance mattered less than the opportunity to watch them play in the fall. The importance was truly in the struggle. Last year’s loss to St Louis however was devastating. The possibly of another climb up the mountain seemed overwhelming and incredibly remote. Beyond that, I (and no doubt many others), feared that Texans would lose at least some interest in the sport. Perhaps our enthusiasm had peaked and we would go back to being a state with only one real sports passion. But this past spring, something miraculous happened. I found that my anticipation of the new season had not in fact died with game six. Rather my desire for a Texas pinnate had only grown, and evidently I’m not alone, as attendance at the Ballpark bears out. Whether it’s a result of the mediocrity of the Cowboys’ recent seasons, or the Mavs meteoric rise and subsequent fall, I don’t know, but as fans, we have fully rebounded.

Following an incredible opening streak the rangers have had their ups and downs, while remaining pretty much at or near the top of major league baseball. It remains to be seen whether or not we (yes we), can push through that infamous post all-star game slump. Regardless, the Texas Rangers are in the middle of a golden age and the state is devoted in a way we’ve never been, at least as far as I can remember. So as a state do we have room in our hearts for another passion? Well, football may never be displaced, in our affection, but more and more it seems we’re waking up to find ourselves a baseball state.              

A Weekend of Heartache for Texas Sports Fans

Ok let’s just say it; this past weekend was a disaster for Texas Sports fans. I had the pleasure of attending the Ranger’s game on Sunday, and after watching them lose game four (and possibly the series); I had the displeasure of hearing the Cowboys gift wrap their game for Tennessee, while I was riding home to Tyler. And not only did our beloved Dallas franchises take it on the chin, but the Houston Texans managed to drop their game to the New York Giants. Oh I just love to lose competitions to that humble city! Even my Fantasy team lost this week! If I had to look high and low for a Texas victory this weekend, (and I did) I could always look to Texas Tech who defeated their opponent 45-38. Of course they were playing Baylor! So I guess that works out to a tie for most of us.

The whole day (Sunday) started out so perfectly that as I reflect back on it, it’s still hard to believe it all went so wrong! My friends and family and I drove up early Sunday morning. It was a beautiful autumn day, and as we strolled past that beautiful Cowboy’s stadium toward the Ball Park, surrounded by devotees of both teams, it was difficult not to be optimistic. Little did we foresee the long trip home that awaited us just three and a half hours later.

Of all the weekend’s losses the Ranger’s was the hardest to take. But Texas has one last chance to steal back the series tomorrow night. And Cliff Lee will get his chance to add his name to the list of the state’s sports heroes. I confess I’m not overly optimistic, but a win Tuesday could still redeem the weekend, because (as a friend pointed out) should we advance I have every intention telling anyone who’ll listen that “I was at that series!” I just won’t make a point of saying which game.

Ultimately the weekend wasn’t a total loss. I took my son to the first Rangers playoff series in over ten years. A Texas Towel now hangs on his bedroom wall, and for a few days he’s reverted from playing almost solely football back to baseball. All indications are that his attention will be back on the Cowboys and football by the end of the week, but for at least one more game, the Rangers are in the playoffs!

Peking Chinese Restaurant

Growing up in Tyler, I became quite an expert on Chinese cuisine by visiting the various buffets that come and go in town regularly; which is to say I knew nothing! Over the years I have waited tables at a good Asian restaurant, as well as lived in larger cities with more to offer in the way of genuinely good eastern cuisine, both dine in and take out. While I confess to occasionally visiting a buffet, Chinese food is so much better when eaten hot and fresh as opposed to off a bar under heat lamps. For those who remain undeterred devotees of buffets, I’ll list a few of my personal favs and explain why they are on that rather short list in another article.  

I recall working the lunch shift at a Chinese restaurant as a young man, and looking forward to the three o’clock break when the kitchen crew would cook up an authentic Chinese lunch for themselves and the wait staff. Of course nothing they cooked could be found on the menu. It was more like what they would have eaten in their own kitchens in the old world and thus far more authentic, hot and delicious. When it comes to good, fresh, inexpensive Chinese takeout, Tyler has one particular establishment that more people should know about.

 Peking Chinese Restaurant is located at 1021 East Fifth (appropriately enough) just up from Tyler Junior College.  A trip to Peking reminds me of my own college days, as well as the places my brother and I used to frequent during my time teaching in St Paul. While its not five star dining, it is classic takeout and far, far better than the buffets which are so popular around town. They carry all the usual menu items, (all of which are delicious by the way), and most patrons will leave the restaurant full for under ten dollars.
 
While Texas will never be famous for its Asian food since it’s obviously not native, Peking does bring to Tyler a bit of big city fare. So here’s to hoping that Tylerites will take a clue from area college students who spend their late nights sitting in corner of Peking cramming for the next morning’s exam. Skip the buffets with their hours old food warming beneath their heat lamps and try some genuine brain food. By the way, the phone number is (903)526-5208.
