Wing Stop on the West Loop

June 20th, 2010

image1444672917.jpgWing Stop has become the place we pick up quick delicious food for family get togethers and events.

Let’s face it sometimes you’re too lazy to even throw a hot dog or chicken wing on the grill.

Let Wing Stop do some deep frying for you instead.

I like their hawian, lemon pepper, mild, and garlic parmesian flavored wings.

The vegi sticks help justify the bindge as you dunk them into ranch dip.

Their French fries are some of the best in town.

Eat here in their store or take it to go. They are good with in store and take out.

They have no trash cabs in the store and you end up using a lot of towels to clean your face and hands.

Simply throw the wadded towels on the floor and concentrate on eating these delicious wings.

There are two Wing Stop locations in Tyler, one by Albertsons on the loop and one on the West loop near hwy 64 and Wal Mart in Tyler.

In an unlikely location in a strip mall behind McDonalds and Burger King you will find a hidden treasure – Basil Thai – Tyler’s only authentic Thai eatery.

Basil Thai in Tyler TX

Basil Thai in Tyler TX

It is called a ‘cafe’ for a reason that is obvious when you walk in – this is no spot for a romantic meal for two. The ambiance is non-existent, it is brightly lit with fluorescent lights in the ceiling, there is a TV in one corner, you order from the counter and the customer is responsible for getting their own drinks and silverware. There is no alcohol served.

But if it is good Asian food you are looking for, and lots of it, this has to be near the top of the list. Basil Thai serves appetizers such as egg rolls and edamame, Thai soups, salads, noodle dishes, curries and lots of different rice dishes with shrimp, salmon, chicken or beef.

As we approached Basil Thai Cafe we were greeted by the most delicious smells. The place was very spartan as I have already described and it was quite cold but it is clean and the food is served on china plates and chopsticks are available which is a bonus. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the menu has descriptions of the ingredients used in each dish for those unfamiliar with Thai food.

The entrees we chose were all under $10 and for that price you get a really big plate of delicious food. The ingredients were fresh – even down to the pineapple and the freshly toasted cashews in the fried rice. The Jasmine rice and rice noodles were wonderful and the vegetables were also crisp and plentiful. Even the Thai tea was good. The owners and chefs are Thai themselves and so the food is very authentic. Two of our party had been to Thailand and found the same flavors we had experienced there represented in the dishes served here in Tyler. However, instead of using parts from the whole chicken as they do in Thailand, the chefs here cooked us only the best chicken breast – definitely a good adjustment to the traditional methods in my mind! We liked the idea of ‘spicy ratings’ for the curries – very accommodating for the Texas palate – you can choose one star, two or three. One star is described as a tingling sensation, two is a stimulating kick and three is a raging fire! I chose two stars which was really quite warm, perhaps the 3 stars should be reserved just for the true ethnically Thai consumers.

I think the reputation of Basil Thai is catching on – we had the last available table last Friday night and the turnover of customers was quite fast. I also noted that there were several families there. Fried rice and noodles are a good option for hungry children.

My overall impressions are that this is a good place for a good fast feed. It isn’t in itself an evening’s entertainment despite the slightly exotic food but is good if you are going somewhere afterwards. Alternatively you could order a take-out and have it at home. You can phone in an order any time. I think I will do that whenever I have a craving for a taste of the Orient!

The Hidden Gate Tyler TX

January 4th, 2010

Tucked away in the middle of Tyler is the small antique shop and restaurant, Hidden Gate. Hidden Gate is known for its quiet atmosphere and homemade delicious food.

Two rooms packed full of antiques and beautiful tables. This would not be a problem for me, but when you have children it becomes pretty much impossible to enjoy yourself in a place like this. There are so many breakable items placed on the edge of shelves, and shelves so close to the tables, children can easily grab and break things.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are available. Hidden gate also has catering for buffet entrees and “hors D’oeuvers”. Desserts are homemade and available. Try their pies, cobblers, cakes and cheesecakes.

Floral wreaths and floral arrangements are also for sale. Check out the website to see the beautiful arrangements on sale depending on the up coming holidays and events.

Enjoy an afternoon tea with your friends. When you come here the music is relaxing and soft so you can actually hear each other talk. There is a great selection of teas and desserts for those outings for your friends. Try the raspberry, peach, strawberry-lemon, or orange spice teas.

If you are hosting a party you can come to Hidden Gate’s Tyler Texas Restaurant and pick up a food tray. Party trays include, cheese trays, sandwich trays, fruit trays and relish trays and pies. Also if you are going on a picnic and don’t have time to pack a lunch, you can pick up a box lunch. You can choose between about five different sandwich and two different wraps. Also you can pick up a Breakfast box, with different homemade croissants sandwiches.

You can go gift shopping here. Hidden Gate sells all different home décor such as candles, platters, lamps, mirrors and so much more. Hidden Gate carries brand name items such as, Acscent Candles, Secret Garden, Time & Again, Crackling Wick, Lady Primrose, and Olio. You can also find jewelry, purses, scarves and much more. You can also use their helpful Lay-a-away plan to help you be able to pay for the perfect gift.

Enjoy a quiet stress free meal but be very careful not to break anything!

Waiter Surprise

November 10th, 2009

In the past I have written about my Olive Garden experiences, but because of my most recent visit to the well-know Italian restaurant I feel a need to re-write about the popular hotspot. I never really was very impressed with the moderate service that I endured.

This past week I was dining with my husband when a young man approached our table. He introduced himself to us and offered us a delicious wine, which we probably never would have ordered if he had not offered the small sample. Many times when I have eaten at Olive Garden I have had no idea what to order so I just order the usual. Even if I ask the waiter what they recommend, usually they just look at me like I have asked the most complicated question. But our waiter, Shaun, knew just what to order. I was impressed at his recommendations.

My drink was never empty, the delicious food was quickly delivered to our table, even though he had many other tables to tend to, our waiter never left us waiting on anything. Service is one of the most important things when going out to eat. Even if the food is great, I would not return to a restaurant if I have had terrible service. I was waiting for him to do something wrong so that I would not have to leave a large tip. My drink was almost empty, but the very moment that I drank the last sip of my glass he set down another drink.

I would not be writing this if it was not for my impression that a waiter actually did his job and much more. Next time I am dinning at Olive Garden I will wait the extra time just to be seated in Shaun’s section.

Breakfast at 3

November 10th, 2009

Pancakes, eggs and bacon for dinner? Or steak and fries for breakfast? At the International House Of pancakes (IHOP) you get the freedom of choice.

Most of the times I have gone to IHOP there is a line out the door. The “A” shaped building is a land mark for fresh, thick, fluffy pancakes. The obnoxious commercials stick with you, so when you are in the mood for the stuffed French toast with strawberries and cool whip, you know to go straight to your town’s IHOP.

You never quite know what kind of service you will get from IHOP. I was impressed the most resent time I visited the breakfast paradise, when our waitress remembered our table’s entire order with out writing it down. I do not think I could remember one person’s order, no less a party of six. There have been other times that I have gone there and have had terrible services, when the waiter forgot have our orders or took forever to bring the food out.

IHOP has added so many items onto their already long menu. They have been advertising the dinner items. I prefer to enjoy the wonderful breakfast items rather than the less than decent dinner items. Watch for great deals, and new delicious food. One of the most famous breakfast deals in Tyler is IHOP’s unending pancakes. On each table there is a delicious selection of fruit or hazelnut or maple syrup.

When I go to IHOP, I usually get the same thing and I am always satisfied with my meal. IHOP does not just have a long menu, great prices and good food, but you always get your money’s worth. Meals are huge served with a large side of eggs made your way, and bacon or sausage, and a huge pile of hash browns. I don’t think I have ever finished eating a meal there.

So stop by and enjoy a coffee and a huge breakfast, anytime of the day, and since it is opened 24 hours, anytime of the night.
