Downtown Tyler Square, What Does it Offer?

December 7th, 2010
Downtown Tyler Texas

Tyler Texas Square

The downtown Tyler Texas square used to offer Jack King Jr. screaming “downtown Tyler” but he is no longer there and people would prefer to impersonate him now rather then hear him do that anymore.

But beyond Jack King Jr.’s TV commercial memorable pitch downtown Tyler has quite a bit more to offer. When I go downtown I usually am stopping at Don Juan’s Mexican Restaurant or I am taking my wife on a fancy date to Jake’s.

When going into Jake’s be sure to let the hostess know you want to go sit up on the roof top. If the weather is good the roof top offers the best experience while eating here. The food at Jake’s is very good and they have a finer dinner menu selection to choose from compared to Chili’s or even Outback.

Jake’s offers an experience of local Tyler Texas dining in one of the many old buildings that still have survived the square.

Just about one year ago a few of these old buildings were destroyed in a fire. In fact a remodeled store converted to a coffee shop/ music venue was taken out as well as a law firm and architecture business. This area is now being turned into a park thanks to the generosity of Brookshire’s grocery store company.

When in downtown during Christmas be sure to stretch your legs by walking in the square. The city of Tyler lights up the square with Christmas lights although any sign of a cross, nativity scene and so on is unfortunately missing. Times do change and political correctness is what you will see now during Christmas. The square is still very pretty and enjoyable and worth a stroll around.

The square also offers Tyler Citizens a fun place for kids as the Discovery Science Place is in walking distance. This place provides something along the lines of a interactive science center for kids in the age range of 2 – 9 and will easily take up a good 3 hours if you decide to experience everything there they have to offer.

Christmas Tree in Tyler Texas

You can also find the very large First Place building at the Tyler Square. The First Place building houses Regions Bank and offers the best commercial real estate offices in town. Many businesses would not accept anything less than the premier facilities you get in this building.

If you are looking for commercial real estate in Tyler I definitely recommend riding the elevators and checking out the offices in this building first hand. Both the view, looks, and spaciousness in these commercial offices can’t be found anywhere else in Tyler.

Finally consider that the Tyler downtown square has several unique antique shops as well as a few very old traditional churches. You can find Marvin United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and Christ Episcopal Church all in downtown Tyler and very close to the square.

Alarms for the Elderly Person in Tyler, Texas

Elderly Alarms in Tyler TX

Alarms for the Elderly in Tyler Texas

Many years ago there was a very popular commercial on television of an elderly woman lying on the floor and crying, “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” This went on to become a popular phrase that appeared in songs and on t-shirts. While it may have been amusing to many people, it was actually a very important lesson in how the right types of alarms can help elderly people remain independent for just a little while longer.

This particular alarm is made for elderly people living alone or with another elderly person. It’s worn on the body and is wired in to a center that monitors these alarms 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If the person wearing the alarm is in need of something, the response time is cut in half or more so. These alarms basically give the elderly person the freedom to continue living independently for as long as possible.

Elderly people in the city of Tyler, Texas have even more choices in alarms. There are alarms that will alert a caregiver when their patient has wandered out of the safe perimeter so that they can be returned before getting too far and getting lost. These are highly popular with home health workers, as it allows the elder their freedom while giving the worker confidence that a situation will not get out of control. These alarms could be life-savers for your elderly relative and any aging loved one determined to remain at home would benefit highly from having one.

Tyler, Texas MLS for Commercial Property

November 9th, 2010

If you are interested in basing your business out of the ever growing city of Tyler, Texas, you may be interested in working with an MLS for commercial property. This is basically a multiple listing service that describes individual services or exchanges to keep up with commercial property available for sale or lease in the Tyler, Texas and surrounding areas.

Many times, working with both a commercial realtor and an MLS service can cut your searching time in half when trying to find your perfect Tyler, Texas commercial property. It opens a lot more doors to you by introducing you to commercial property that you may not have had access to by just going through a commercial realtor.  These two can work for you hand in hand and offer you even more choices when it comes to finding the most profitable location for your type of business.

It is also possible for you to work on your own with an MLS service. If you choose to keep your commercial realtor and MLS service as two separate methods of finding the right commercial property in Tyler, Texas, that is your prerogative. However, you should have a good working relationship of complete trust with your realtor so that you feel comfortable combining the two. Keep in mind that your realtor can help you even more with information on any commercial property you find through an MLS service. Don’t discredit the importance of an expert for finding the perfect commercial property for you.

Discovery Science Place in Tyler Texas

June 21st, 2010

It’s probably been going on for some time, but I’ve only just recently noticed that in the last few years most major cities have opened up very hands science museums geared to kids of all ages. I spent a number of years as a teacher in St. Paul, Minnesota, where there is an excellent model.

Every year we paid a visit with our classes as I recall. It’s an excellent facility that has brought in some really big time exhibits including the T-Rex Sue. (In fact as a side note, while researching for this piece I learned that the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibition is visiting the Science Museum of Minnesota, from March through October.

It has been touring the country and I have looked high and low for a schedule of the tour, hoping it will come to Texas, but as yet I have been unable to find one. If any readers know whether or not this exhibition will be visiting the Lone Star State Please leave a comment on this site. I would love to take some Tyler TX history students. But I greatly digress… Sorry).

Tyler is a growing city that is always on the look- out for opportunities to emulate her larger sisters and this, is no exception. The Discovery Science Place (DSP) is Tyler’s version of the hands- on child friendly educational experience offered by institutions like the Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas.

Now admittedly the DSP is not nearly the size of the Dallas version, but if it continues to grow with the City of Tyler, perhaps it will one day rival the bigger institutions. Their exhibits include: Watts of Fun, Little Ones Lagoon, the Shadow Wall and a number of others. Hands on exhibits include: thumbprint pictures, and mighty magnets. At this point it is definitely geared to younger children, but that should change some as they expand. Admission is six dollars per person with free admittance for visitors two and under.

Another opportunity offered by the Discovery Science Place is the Passport to Summer Discovery Camp. It runs from June seventh through August thirteenth, and is essentially a Vacation Science School for kids from four to twelve. The camp seems like an excellent opportunity. It runs in week- long sessions lasting either a half day or full day and cost seventy five, or one hundred fifty dollars respectively.

For more information on the Discovery Science place in Tyler visit their website at www.discoveryscienceplace.org. To plan a visit to the Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, go to www.natureandscience.org. The Fort Worth version also appears worthy of investigation. Their website is www.fwmuseum.org.  Lastly, for those headed toward the coast this summer, I should mention that there is also a science museum in Houston simply called the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It looks terrific! Their website is www.hmns.org.

East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market

East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

I’ve heard it said that every man has at least one good novel in him, I hope that is true. I think it is also true that most people have a have a gardener in there somewhere. I very much enjoy the process of experimenting with different plants and watching things grow in Tyler TX. For me however the journey is something of its own reward. I am a nominal gardener at best. I generally do ok, and I enjoy eating the fresh fruits and vegetables I grow, but I certainly don’t produce enough to supply all my nutritional needs. In recent years I have less time to devote to the pursuit of gardening, but I definitely miss the process, as well as the fresh food.

The East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market has as its mission to “promote a sense of community within the City of Tyler, to bring fresh local food to the public and to provide farmers and producers a place to sell their goods at a reasonable price.” For those of us who don’t have our own farms or gardens, the Farmers Market offers access to quality local produce. Not only does the community stand to eat better, but the money spent at the market stays home in Tyler. And the venue offers more than just fruits and vegetables. There are booths that sell fresh eggs, honey, stone ground corn meal, even craft items like quilted goods and candles as well.

The Farmers Market is open three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), from seven in the morning to one in the afternoon. It runs from May eight to August fourteenth. For those interested in becoming a vendor at the local Farmer’s Market there is a fairly extensive application as well as a list of rules. Interested readers can find the application by going to http://www.etstatefair.com/documents/ETSFFARMERSMKTVENDORCONTRACT2010.pdf. For general info visit: http://www.etstatefair.com/farmers-market.php. Different products peak at different times obviously, so I also recemend checking out the market’s Facebook page in order to see what kind of produce is likely to be available. Just click on the link below to go to the site directly.  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tyler-TX/East-Texas-State-Fair-Farmers-Market/10150123220645427?filter=1,

So while I may not have time to grow my own garden this year, I can still enjoy the freshest possible food and keep more of my dollars home in East Texas.
