Christian Heritage Athletics

October 21st, 2010

In the last few years there has been a rush on the part of private schools and some even home school co-ops to add Football to their athletic programs. Smaller schools like King’s Academy, for whom fielding a full team is for one reason another not an option are joining six- man leagues, and larger schools like Grace, All Saints, and Brook Hill are competing with full squads. There are however a number of private schools in Tyler, like Christian Heritage, who are resisting the move toward football and opting to continue with another fall sport, namely Soccer.

Christian Heritage School (CHS) has been playing Soccer for around twenty- five years now and it has been a part of the school’s tradition and student culture. The school has won numerous state and national titles in that time and thus finds moving over to fall football a difficult change of gears. CHS is affiliated with the international missions organization, Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The organization draws families and individuals from all over the world, whose children are in need of a school to attend while their parents attend the mission’s adult classes. The CHS soccer program has thus benefited from this due to the fact that it has consistently been able to draw students from countries where soccer is less an athletic program, and more of a way of life.

East Texas Christian Academy (ETCA) has also elected to continue offering fall soccer rather than moving in the direction of American Football. But how long will these schools continue to opt out of East Texas’ favorite sport? Some suggest that given the international make- up of CHS it will probably be a while before the school takes the plunge. But with more and more schools switching over, one would think that the field of competitors is bound to shrink eventually. As a proponent of CHS and private schools in general, I would love to see the school take to the football field. I’ve seen first hand how beneficial it can be for helping to produce a sense of school community and richer student life. But suspect it will only happen when the school can support both sports.

Hopefully we’ll see at least a six- man CHS football team in the next few years but regardless let me assure you that Tyler loves you CHS.

Teachers For The Nations

January 19th, 2010

Teacher for the Nation is one of the schools that Youth with a Mission has to offer and this is accredited through University of the Nation located in Hawaii and Eclesia in Arkansas. When you have completed the course you earn 27 credits towards the degree you are choosing. I have taken several courses that YWAM Tyler had to offer and can truly say that I enjoyed each one very much. This year I am taking T.F.N. and loving every minute of it. Not going to lie….really hard work and long hours just like any other school or work. Jim and Barbara Kilkenny started this school in 1980, the same year they pioneered the Christian Heritage School. I was always terrified of doing T.F.N. because I have been told that is was very challenging and thought provoking. Before starting school…I thought I knew a lot…but have learned how little reasoning power I really had. While you are in the school…this is the kind of curriculum you would be taking: Sentence Analysis, Growing Kids God’s way, History, Philosophy, Education and Government, and Curriculum Development.

History is God’s story of what really happened and the reason we are here today.

I came from Romania and my experience has been that everywhere you go they teach you something different. For example, I was taught in Romania that Ulad Tepes the Impaler was a hero. Someone who loved and protected his country…when I got to America I learned that he was horrible and evil. That is why it is so important to get the right foundations…T.F.N. teaches you how to think govern-mentally and Biblically to reason from the Bible. They teach you to think for yourself and research the truth. People make the mistake of thinking that the school is only for teachers. Not true, it is for anyone who longs to learn how to reason from true principles. The staff is always ready to help in anyway you need. Everyone of the teachers are filled with a passion to teach and make sure you learn to love studying and have fun while you do it. Bet you never dreamed of that. For the first time in my life I love learning for the reason of understanding. It has been life changing for me and because the teachers are all such great teachers and love what they do….they have dedicated their life to teaching the truth to each student.

Tyler Christian Heritage School

January 17th, 2010

Tyler Christian Heritage School is located off Dixie Drive close to the airport. The school is a non-profit ministry that was started by YWAM (Youth with a Mission) because they saw the need for children to learn biblical principles at the same time help them to be educated in a Christian way. Christian Heritage School is an amazing school that was pioneered in 1980 by Jim and Barbara Kilkenny. Jim and Barbara both had been teaching in public schools before starting Tyler Christian Heritage. They saw the need was great for truth being taught to the children, but more than them loving education, they love God and His word. In my opinion, they are truly heroes because they decided a long time ago to sacrifice their wants and needs so they could serve God and help spread the gospel of truth through a private school.

Their vision is to teach the children how to reason from God’s word and apply it to their everyday life. They offer kindergarten through 12Th grade. I myself went to the school for awhile and to be truthful I did not appreciate what was being taught because I was too immature and stubborn to realize the things that they were teaching me. I never once thought that there was a difference to what was being taught in private school and public school, not until I was older and left the school. When I entered the real world I regretted not taking education seriously and thinking that school was just boring. I now see that Christian Heritage School is a blessing. All the staff that tried to help me in school…didn’t do it for money but for the love of God. They make no money off teaching. They are doing it because they love education and see the importance of teaching based on godly principles. If I had to do it over, I would take every moment seriously and know that they truly care about my well being and the choices I make in life.

The staff knows that if they get you to reason from the truth you will know how to self govern and won’t need someone in life to tell you what to do. You will long to do what is right on your own if you can reason from the truth. The school provides a safe environment where children can learn about God, and all the subjects that He created. It might be a shock for some to realize that God was the originator of all the subjects that we now learn in school. Unfortunately, today in public schools they rob you of the truth that God was the creator of the universe and that without Him nothing exists. Christian Heritage teaches the right morals in life. The school also has many things to do with sports. The offer volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis and track. They welcome home schooled children to come and play in any of the sport activities. The school is ready to work with your children and family, depending on your circumstances. They will always give people a chance and their heart is to not turn anyone away. Just like public school, Christian Heritage does have rules to go by to ensure the safety and well being of your children.

Some parents have always been worried whether their children would get a proper education. Many of the students that graduated from Christian Heritage School have gone on to pursue additional education in a junior college and eventually earn a bachelor degree. Going to Christian Heritage School won’t hinder your child from being the person they want to become or accomplishing their goals in life. It will only prepare them to be better equipped for life. So rest assured that if you choose to send your children to Christian Heritage that they would get an excellent education and make long lasting friendships.

An Institution In East Texas Education

January 8th, 2010

Christian Heritage School was founded in the early eighties by a group of missionaries from California. Originally the school was intended as a ministry to the children of the mission, but it soon grew into a ministry to the local community. For thirty years now C.H.S. has been educating East Texas young people. James Kilkenny has been the headmaster throughout that period. He and his staff are dedicated to Christian education.

C.H.S. follows the “Principle Approach” methodology, which places the Scriptures at the center of every subject. The curriculum borrows from the methods of early Americans. Students write in notebooks which in most cases, serve as their primary textbooks. The classroom teacher drives the student’s learning. He or she is considered a “living textbook.” Obviously this necessitates that the teacher’s role is a lifetime pursuit of learning.

Reasoning is also central to the schools approach. No multiple choice easy answer work here. The students are encouraged to reason logically rather than memorize. The school places a heavy emphasis on English and Writing. Those who complete the program, demonstrate great proficiency in writing and communication. History and government also take a central role. The school prides itself on its examination of original documents and founding principles. The students study not only the writings and beliefs of historical figures but their lives and character as well.

The student’s experience at C.H.S. is a positive one. The Tyler Texas school offers a fairly familiar class list with the addition of classes like Latin and Logic. With a student body that fluctuates between 150 and 200+ the student teacher ratio allows a lot of individual attention. The student teacher relationship is very important since the teachers are expected to model their faith and inspire a love of learning.

The athletic program provided an outlet for the competitive pursuits; and provides a sense of community to the families who attend the school. Soccer, Volleyball, basketball, track and tennis are among the sports offered.

Christian Heritage is located at the old Dixie School, some buildings of which were erected in the twenties and thirties. The campus has expanded over the years into the wonderful facility that can be seen today. A beautiful gymnasium, soccer field and playground make the school a great place to play.

Summer is not too early to be considering the 2009- 2010 school year. For the family concerned with strong academics, deep faith, and a rich traditional school experience, this institution is worth considering.
