My wife and I were cruising around Tyler a little after 11:00am. We were pretty hungry since we hadn’t had breakfast that morning. We were both in the mood for a good burger and we knew that MacDonald’s or Burger King wasn’t going to cut it for us on this day. Then like Ace of Base, I saw the sign. The Smashburger sign. I had been wanting to try Smashburger so this seemed like a fortuitous sighting. We pulled in and set our minds in burger mode. It’s a good thing we arrived when we did. A little after we sat down to eat the lunch crowd started to arrive. Smashburger appears to be a pretty popular place. But I needed to taste their food to see if they had earned all this attention.

Smashburger basically serves six kinds of burgers and a few chicken sandwiches along with sides and malts. I felt a little hurried trying to figure out what I wanted. There were only two people ahead of us so I had to think quick. The six burger options are the Classic Smashburger (American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, onion, pickles, and smash sauce on an egg bun) the All American Smashburger (American cheese, ketchup, mustard, onion, and pickles on an egg bun), Lonestar Smashburger (served open face with cheddar cheese, beefy chili, diced onions, diced tomatoes, fresh jalapenos, and graded cheese on a chipotle bun), BBQ Bacon and Cheese burger (BBQ sauce, apple wood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and haystack onions on an egg bun), Spicy Baja burger (Pepper Jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, chipotle mayo and fresh jalapeno on a chipotle bun), Mushroom Swiss burger (garlic sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and mayo on an egg bun), and the Classic Smashchicken (chicken breast with red onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a butter toasted multi-grain bun). Besides the Classic Smashchicken you can also substitute chicken for beef on the Lonestar, the BBQ, Bacon and Cheese, Spicy Baja, and Mushroom Swiss. The Classic Smashchicken costs $5.99 and the rest cost $6.99. The Classic and All American Smashburger cost $4.99 for a 1/3 lb. burger and $5.99 for a ½ lb. burger. The Lonestar, BBQ, Bacon & Cheese, Spicy Baja and Mushroom and Swiss all cost $5.99 for a 1/3 lb. burger and $6.99 for a ½ lb. burger.

As I was looking quickly over the various burger choices I decided to get the BBQ, Bacon & Cheese. The Spicy Baja sounded tempting to me as well with its guacamole and spicy kick. The Lonestar Smashburger would have interested me a few years ago but it just sounds gross to me now. Chili, cheese, diced onions, and jalapenos. My heart and stomach would not be thanking me. My wife ordered the BBQ, Bacon & Cheese as well but she told them to hold the BBQ sauce. That was a good idea. The burger was quite tasty. It was obviously a good piece of beef cooked up right so you could savor the flavor. The bacon was excellent -thick pieces of apple wood smoked bacon. It was nothing like those limp, pathetic, slivers of bacon they give you at fast-food joints. The cheddar cheese was quite tasty as well although the bun smothered some of its flavor. My wife was right about the BBQ sauce. The sauce tasted fine but there wasn’t very much of it on the burger so I couldn’t get enough of the flavor in each bite. I kept wanting to add ketchup but that would have tasted gross with the BBQ sauce. I liked the haystack onions on the burger but they were quite salty.

Of course you can build your own Smashburger or Smashchicken sandwich. I would definitely do this next time. When you create your own sandwich you choose your own bun (classic egg, multi-grain, spicy chipotle, or none), cheese (American, aged Swiss, sharp cheddar, blue, pepper jack), Sauces and dressings (ketchup and mustard, mayo, ranch, smash sauce, spicy chipotle), and toppings (leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, grilled onions, kosher pickle slices, jalapenos). You can also get add-ons to your burger for an additional fee: extra 1/3 lb. smash burger ($2.00), extra ½ lb. smash burger ($3.00), apple wood smoked bacon ($1.49), beefy chili ($0.99), fried egg ($0.99), guacamole ($0.99), garlic sautéed mushrooms ($0.99), fried pickles ($0.49), extra cheese ($0.49), and haystack onions ($0.49). I have been mulling some ideas for burgers over in my head. I would go with the multi-grain bun. Healthier, you know. Swiss cheese is gross so that is out. Pepper Jack would be good with a spicy style burger. Cheddar good with everything. But I think I would go with the blue cheese. It tastes so good on burgers when its done right. I don’t know if I would get any sauce. Maybe a little mayo. Then I’d definitely add on some of that  apple wood smoke bacon. And maybe for a crazy little twist I’d add on some fried pickles as well. Anyway, you burger lovers can see how you could have fun building your own masterpiece. If you build your own smashburger it costs $4.99 for a 1/3 lb. burger, $5.99 for a ½ lb. burger, or $6.49 if it has chicken instead of beef. That’s not counting the cost of add-ons of course.

I got some of Smashburger’s Sweet Potato Smashfries to go with my burger. The Sweet Potato Smashfries are seasoned with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic. They cost $1.99 with the purchase of a sandwich and $2.99 by themselves. I thought they were very good and a fun change of pace from your typical fries. The problem was there were too many of them. While the flavor was good it’s not the kind you want to keep eating for very long so I didn’t end up finishing my Sweet Potato Smashfries. Smashburger’s regular smash fries are seasoned the same way as the Sweet Potato Smashfries. I think they would be very good. They cost $1.79 if you get a sandwich and a dollar more if you don’t. Other sides at Smashburger include shoestring style fries seasoned with sea salt, Haystack Onions (thinly sliced, crispy onions with dipping sauce), Fried Pickles (served with buttermilk ranch dressing), veggie frites (flash fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans) and beefy chili (beef with beans, jalapeno slices and grated cheese). The veggie frites and fried pickles sound good to me. The veggie frites cost $2.99 with a sandwich and a dollar by themselves. The fried pickles (and haystack onions) cost $1.99 with a sandwich and $2.99 without. The beefy chili costs $2.59 with a sandwich and a dollar more by itself

They also have hot dogs (smashdogs) at Smashburger. They are all made from 100% Angus beef and served on a toasted poppy seed bun. The Classic Dog (mustard, ketchup, relish) costs $3.49. The Chicago Dog (yellow mustard, tomatoes, sport peppers, sweet relish, onions) and the Chili Cheese Dog (grated cheddar cheese, onions, jalapenos, and beefy chili) both cost $3.99.

There are three salad options on the menu and the all cost $6.99. The three salads are the Cowboy Cobb (diced chicken breast, chopped applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, haystack onions, romaine and iceberg lettuce, with spicy chipotle sauce and topped with guacamole and jalapenos) The Smashwedge (wedge of iceberg lettuce, chopped applewood smoked bacon, diced tomatoes, red onions, blue cheese crumbles with blue cheese dressing) and the Ranch Chicken Club (strips of crispy buttermilk seasoned chicken, chopped applewood smoked bacon, diced tomatoes, red onions, cheddar cheese, romaine and iceberg lettuce, with buttermilk ranch dressing).

There are also four meal options especially for kids. The kids smashburger, smashdog, chicken strips, and grilled cheese. All of the kids meals are $3.99, all appear to be unhealthy, and all are sure to please a kids taste buds.

I was interested in getting one of Smashburger’s specialty shakes or malts. They are made with Haagen Dazs – oh yeah! You can get vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry flavor. My wife thought they were too, expensive though. They cost $3.99. I reminded her that drinks at Starbucks cost even more but I still didn’t get my chocolate shake. They also have a root beer float in a frosted mug for the same price as the shakes and malts.

The drinks at Smash burger (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Minute Maid Lemonade, Iced Tazo Tea, Bottle Water, and a bottle of IBC root beer) all cost $1.69. You can also get a bottle of beer for $2.99, a bucket of four bottles of beer for $9.99, or a glass of red or white wine for $3.99.

I knew after the first few bites of my BBQ, Bacon & Cheese burger that I liked Smashburger. The fact that they played one of my favorite songs from “Wincing the Night Away” by the Shins only increased my opinion of the place. I am planning to return soon to create my own masterpiece burger. I will probably have to experiment a little bit to get it just right (that’s part of the fun) but I will perfect it eventually.

Smash Burger in Tyler Texas

July 6th, 2010

In Tyler there are not very many good burger joints. I was in search for the best burger. My search was not long once I had eaten at Smash Burger. I am not a big burger eater, but once I took my first bit of Smash Burger’s BBQ bacon and cheese burger, a new love of ground beef came to me.

The prices are some what high but I think that it is worth it. Personally I would rather pay the extra money to eat a burger that is enjoyable than to buy off a dollar menu and feel my body shutting down due to the fake meat. Smash burger gives you a choice between 1/3 pound and ½ pound burger. The 1/3 pound filled me up perfectly fine.

If you are not a burger eater and are to stubborn to try the best burger in town, than they have Smash chicken! Most of the toppings that you can get on the burgers; you can get on the chicken sandwich. If you are a picky eater you can create your own burger or chicken sandwich. You can choose your own buns, cheese, sauce (or dressing), or topping.

If you eat at Smash Burger do not be surprised if your diet is broken or if you use up all of your Weight Watcher’s points on one meal. Smash burger has answers for you, try their Smash Salads! Each salad is thrown with apple wood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese (or blue cheese crumbles), chicken breast, and dressing.

If you are an odd person and nothing has gotten your mouth to water. You can always try a Smash dog. You can choose between three different hot dogs, Classic dog, Chicago dog, or Chili Cheese dog. Each hot dog is made with 100% Angus Beef, and served on a lightly toasted poppy seed bun.

Your children can enjoy a kid’s meal, they can choice either a burger, hot dog, chicken strips, or grilled cheese. All kids meals are served with fries and a drink (either soft drink or milk).

Usually burger joints have the usually sides, like fries. Smash Burger steps out side the box with their side. You can have a choice between two different types of French fries (or Smash fries). Smash fries are tossed in rosemary, olive oil and garlic. They have great onions strings, Haystack onions, fried pickles, beefy chili, veggie frites (fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans), or my personal favorite, sweet potato smash fries.

For dessert try one of the four different milk shakes or malts. You can have a choice of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or lime. You can have a refreshing Root Beer float in a frosted mug. Get a cold soft drink with your meal, or a beer or you can try a glass of wine (house red or house white).

Smash Burger is a great place to hang out with your friends, although right now it has become a very popular place in Tyler and it is hard to get a table inside of the Tyler Texas restaurant. You can relax out in the sun while sitting on the patio. Enjoy your food at Smash Burger and you can get what you really want.

My Last Goodbye

January 11th, 2010

Today I write to you world with a heavy heart and a tear in my eye. For January 11, 2010 is the final goodbye to a dear friend. This friend has been there for us all in times of hunger, in times of cramping, and in times of A-1 cravings. Whataburger fans across Texas are mourning as the “A-1 thick-n-hearty” burger is being lowered into the ground.

I have great memories of you my friend. Many late, late night cravings during the second trimester of my pregnant life, we stayed up late talking and crying over a sappy movie. You were always there to comfort me. The couple months a year that you were around made my world a little brighter. Well, most of the time, exception being when I found you half eaten and smooshed in an orange and white paper bag under the seat of my car, and my whole car smelt like a new born baby’s soiled pants. I could not look at you for a few weeks. But through it all, my friend, you kept returning into my loving hands. But you are leaving me now; many say you will never again return. My hopes are still high that we will meet again, if not in this life, surely in the next. For you, dear friend, are simply “Heavenly”.

You are no mere Tyler burger. You are like a king among all other fast food peasant burgers. You were a revelation, steak sauce in fast food, who would have thought? Inspiration, pure inspiration. Your double meat patties falls apart in our mouths as we hear the melody of rhythmic trumpets, your cheese playfully dances with our taste buds, the strips of bacon satisfies your unknown “heart attack cravings“, and your onions cooked perfectly to a light brown to ensure pure pleasure, now the sauce, the finishing touch that puts the A-1 in the “A-1 thick-n-hearty” makes you who you are. You are the reason my stomach stayed full and my wallet empty.

We will never forget you. We will try to keep your legacy alive. It is hard to imagine what we will do without you. Well, I guess we could just get a Whataburger cheese burger with bacon and onions and just bring A-1 steak sauce. That might actually work; it would probably be about the same price, maybe cheaper. Well so long my friend.

Fast Food Freak Out

October 21st, 2009

Tyler has so many different locations for each of your fast food cravings. Each place has it’s own feel and more importantly taste. Every restaurant you eat at it is very important to know how clean the restaurant and kitchen is, but also how clean the food is.

Taco Bell is know for its cheap prices and one of the few successful Mexican fast food restaurants. But to most people it is known for its puddles of grease, and want to be ground beef. There has been so many times that I have been there and the floors were dirty, the bathrooms filthy, and walked out discussed. I will not return to Taco Bell after once being grossed out by the mold growing on the side of my cheesy gordita crunch and one time I had someone’s hair in my taco. It was so disgusting that I can hardly drive by a taco bell with out my stomach turning.

Everyone across the world has seen the two golden arches. McDonald’s cheese burger is one of the most famous burgers. Kid’s faces light up every time you drive up and they see the huge play place. For some reason all the McDonald’s except a couple, have taken out their play places. Personally, I don’t see what people like about the food here. I recently went to a McDonald’s that was inside the Wal-Mart off of Broadway. My family ordered and not a single thing was made the way we asked for. I was so frustrated that I wanted to complain along with half the other customers whose order was wrong, but it took so long for the food to come out the first time that I did not have the time to deal with waiting that long again. I get frustrated walking into a McDonald’s restaurant and how dirty the play places are. But the play place is the thing that kids love the most about McDonald’s.

Subway is the healthy way to go when you decide to go to eat at a fast food restaurant. Walk through the great vegetable bar and pick out exactly what you want on your sandwich and how you want it. Toasted or not, pick out the bread, meat and cheese. You can look on the menu to get the healthiest sandwich that is advertised to help you loose weight. You can always find fresh vegetables and fresh sandwich meat. They even sell pizzas that you can put whatever you want on it. They also have great new flat bread that is my new favorite thing to get there. So if you want to get fast food I suggest to go healthy and stop by Subway.

I don’t know how people can still eat at Long John Silver’s. I have not eaten there in a long time but I have all the reason to not go there. I got so sick when I went there when I was little. I don’t know why some one would think that “rubbery” fake sea food would taste good. Even the thought of the food just sounds really gross.

Texas has a great fast food chain. From miles away you can spot the bright orange and white metal roof or Whataburger. It is no regular fast food restaurant each one has it’s own feel. There you can also have a great place to watch a game and hang out with your friends. Have a great juicy burger and some great fries. Enjoy the real ice cream taste and have a great strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla shake. Whataburger’s prices are usually higher than other chain fast food restaurants but the food is so much better. You can be able to make your burger your way. Stop by for the best specials around. Stop and enjoy great food, environment, people and enjoy a cold Dr. Pepper.

The ultimate drink stop in the United States is the well known drive threw, Sonic. Have fun hanging out side and play some sand volleyball, or play with the kids on the play place. Come over to get a drink for half off from 2:00 to 4:00. You can get a lot of different flavors in your soda or get a refreshing slushy in any flavor. The food is terrible. I have mentioned before that I hate greasy food. I get discussed by the puddles of grease floating on the top of chili cheese tots. But there is not many things more wonderful than to cool down with a cold drink or ice cream on a hot Texan summer. So stop by and get a drink for half off.

I hate watching the television and seeing those retarded Jack In The Box commercials. I hate them so much that I wont even eat there. I once ate there and my burger and fries were cold. I heard of great deals on food there, but because of the nasty creepy commercials I refuse to go there.

Another of the best fast food chains in Tyler is the most popular, Chick-fil-a. Everyone knows the cows that are able write, yet misspell the word “more”. Get the best chicken and a wonderful fresh salad. Get a drink of great sweat tea or one of their new milkshakes. Try all their great sauces. They have wonderful waffle fries and the best chicken sandwiches. Enjoy a fun time and let your kids play in the fun play places. Come to “cow appreciation day” and dress up like a cow for a free meal. have some fun and great food. Bring your kids to Chick-fil-a.

For the worst food of all the fast food restaurants, but one of the cheapest places to get ice cream, go to Dairy Queen. Last time I went there it took forever to get my food and the Dairy Queen was dirty. But kids have a fun time eating ice cream and playing, but the food was awful. The chicken was hard and the salad brown. It was one place that I wont go back to.

Want to eat at a place whose bread is old, the wait is long, your food always is brought out wrong, but the food is good? The stop by Wendy’s. Try food off of the one dollar menu. I do admit that they have great new chicken and some times there are things that are pretty good. But I don’t think there was once that I went there and it didn’t take for ever for the food to come out, or my order was wrong. I don’t have the time to eat there, but if your patient enough for it, go ahead and eat cheap at Wendy’s.

So here is my opinion of the fast food restaurants to go eat or stay clear. Tyler has a great variety of fast food restaurants, you just need to know which ones to stay clear of. Take out your kids to have a fun time, and enjoy a quick bite on your lunch break, just know where to go.
