Smashburger in Tyler TX

January 30th, 2011

Hamburger places in Tyler TXWhen in Tyler you now have a couple more burger places to try out. Jucy’s opened a new more modern looking facility and sells the same good burgers but frozen chicken fingers and milk shakes made from soft serve icecream. Now Smashburger on the other hand has even better hamburgers, really good fries, and their shakes are made with Hagen Daaz icecream.

If I could pick each time for lunch when I am in a hamburger mood where I should go it would be Smashburger everytime.

Why do more local chains like Jucy’s have to resort to buying cheap Sysco foods tasting frozen chicken strips and making shakes out of stuff they give you for free at chinese buffets?

Smashburger offers the quality, consistency, and food choices I demand in a good hamburger place in Tyler TX. It is going to be very hard to out do them.

Great Mexican Food At An Affordable Price

January 8th, 2010

With around 1000 Mexican eateries in and around Tyler Texas ranging from the big chains to your little ‘hole in the walls’, Taqueria El Lugar is a Tyler staple. With its five locations Lugar offers everything from beef tacos to chicken burritos. And if you think a quesadilla is a thin tortilla shaped like a triangle you haven’t met Lugar’s #7. The #7 is a super quesadilla stuffed to the gills with your choice of beef, ham or chicken with cilantro, cheese and sliced avocado! Oh!-you’ll need both hands! The Super Quesadilla cost around $3.80 each

A Great Place to Bring “Out of Towners”

You have friends from out of town? You want to show them something a little less tex-mex?

Taqueria El Lugar is more authentic and will not disappoint non Tylerites. Try its newest location in the shopping center just south of The Diner  in Tyler. If you hit ‘Academy Sports’ you’ve gone way too far!

Gander Mountain in Tyler

January 8th, 2010

Over the last few years, the sporting goods mega store / museum has become the order of the day. Now, I realize I often tend to favor local business over larger chains. But in this case, I’m taking a different tack. These new stores often serve as a show case for the latest and greatest new products in the sporting goods world, sort of a Sharper Image only useful and fun.

Well Tyler now has one of its own in Gander Mountain. A visit here has something for everyone. Even my little boy is entranced by the stuffed game of all kinds which hangs on the walls. To him, it’s almost like visiting a zoo or a museum.

Admittedly the Tyler Gander Mountain, (located on South Broadway) is not the most well stocked sporting goods store in town. In comparison to someplace like Academy Sports, G.M.s market is smaller since it caters more to the outdoorsman than the athlete. It is one of the few places (other than book stores) however, where I actually enjoy browsing for browsing’s sake.

The fishing and tackle section is a vortex I find it easy to get sucked into. A visit to G.M. prior to a fishing trip increases the cost of my trip exponentially. The camping section is full of temptation as well but fortunately (or unfortunately) my budget doesn’t allow for too many impulse buys of items contained there.

It prices at Gander Mountain are not particularly low. Much of what they stock is larger, high dollar items. For those of us in the market for smaller things like fishing lures or bait the prices are slightly higher than elsewhere since the customer is essentially paying for the selection. It’s generally worth it though since a trip here is in and of itself, an experience. For more information see their website at www.gandermountain.com, or better yet, stop in for a visit. They’re located at 151 Market Square Blvd. just off South 69, in Tyler TX.

Jersey Mike’s Wins in the End

October 15th, 2009

For those looking for a great place to stop for lunch, Jersey Mike’s makes a delicious sandwich for a reasonable price. Now, I like an occasional Subway sandwich as much as anyone but I find that on completing one, I can hardly remember having eaten it. Not so with Jersey Mikes. At JM they build their sandwiches using only the freshest ingredients. And trust me when I say that this sandwich shop can satisfy even the biggest appetite.

My personal favorite is the cheese steak sub. Now as someone who has eaten a genuine Philly Cheese steak sandwich on the actual streets of Philadelphia, allow me to testify to the fact that they are pretty hard to beat. Well Jersey Mikes can’t beat them, but they come closer to matching them than anything I’ve tasted in Tyler or East Texas. The meatball sub is also one of their delicious signature sandwiches.

Jersey Mike’s is no big secret in Tyler. Lunch time brings out quite a mixed crowd. This store is a great place for a bite on the go, or an informal business lunch. In comparison to other area sandwich chains, I would place Mike’s near the top of the heap. In my opinion it beats out both Subway and Quizno’s. McAlister’s serves delicious fare, but due to personal reasons makes for awkward social situations. Newk’s is good, but priced too high for what you get. Schlotzsky’s is also serves some excellent food, so I find it a close call between them with JM winning by a nudge.

So the next time you find yourself craving a sub sandwich, try something other than the usual stops. Try Jersey Mike’s, it is located at 4754 South Broadway next to Eye Mart Express. I think I can guarantee you will remember eating there.
