Chilis in Lindale Texas

April 22nd, 2010

Chilis
3210 S Main St
Lindale
Tx 75771
903 882 3227

For those that don’t know – Chilis is an American and once-upon-a-time vaguely Mexican restaurant with a bar. They have burgers, Tex-mex , chicken, ribs, the odd salad (not as healthy an option as you might think) steaks, plus monstrous desserts and margaritas.

I am a fairly easy-to-please foodie but Chilis in Lindale is quite frankly, horrible. I have simply NO idea why American families would subject themselves to this extremely high calorie, often pre-cooked, junk. I can only assume that with so many locations nationwide, that there is some comfort in eating somewhere familiar. Or perhaps the bar makes it popular (not many of those in Lindale). Maybe it is because at Chili’s the prices are reasonable for a family of four or for those sharing a meal. Maybe it’s just because it’s near Walmart and the I20 and the coloring on the menu keeps the children quiet. There must be reasons, because it can’t be the food!

The place itself is dark and smoky. The bar is always busy and loud and the large amount of smokers mean that the smoke penetrates everywhere. Chilis in Lindale is also very busy. Consequently, service is poor, the servers are overworked and if you go there in the evening, expect a poor meal from the overwhelmed kitchen staff too.

We had cheese and brocoli soup to start which was more like a thick cheese sauce than soup, and crispy onions with ranch. These seemed very fatty so I looked up the nutritional information afterwards and found to my horror – that this appetizer contained more calories than a woman my size should have for the whole day!

We also ate chicken crispers (dry and nasty) fajitas (more greasy than you could imagine) and the kids shared grilled cheese and corn dogs. Vegetable options were available but poorly cooked and unappetizing. From my observation of the steaks going to other tables, I would say, don’t waste your money. I did like the idea of the sweet shots – small sized desserts but don’t be tempted by a brownie sundae, they are around 1300 calories too! The choice of Margaritas is pretty large but they are quite expensive. Beer comes in frosted mugs which is good on a hot day.

All in all, Chili’s is a poor choice for a meal out. I would seriously say – for your healths sake and for your mood, don’t do it! Try Posados across the road for TexMex or the Cracker Barrel for country fare.

I’m sure that somewhere in the US the Chili’s Grill must have a good reputation – but not Lindale Chili’s! There is also a Chilis in Tyler on the West SW loop. Perhaps that one is better!

One of my favorite restaurants to go to almost every week in Tyler is Don Juan’s. What you get at Don Juan’s that keeps me coming back is consistency and decent service.

The food is always of high quality and I usually get a pretty good waiter or waitress attentive to my food needs. They will almost always bring out some godo quality crunchy chips to your table. These chips aren’t the thin greasy chips you get at most places that people seem to like a lot. Don Juan’s chips are small triangular crunchy goodness. Combined with Don Juan’s extra spicy green and red hot sauce and you get a nice little appetizer prior to your taco’s or quesadilla arriving.

My favorite item right now at Don Juan’s taqueria are their chicken taco’s on corn tortilla’s. I will usually ask that they include cilantro, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and avacodo. I will usually get the taco’s without avacodo and I will sometimes ask for the waiter to go back and bring me some avacodo but usually I will just eat it however it comes out. Isn’t that what you do at McDonald’s? My order is never right there but I just eat however it comes out because why waist time complaining every visit?

My favorite drink at Don Juan’s is their Cantoulope juice. I would have never thought this flavor of juice would be good but in my mind it doesn’t taste exactly like cantaloupe but more like a refreshing fruit drink without distinct melon flavor. If you doubt my recommendation go ahead and order this drink and see what I mean. This drink is some good stuff! I have recommended the drink to a few of my friends and my wife. All of these people were reluctant at first but went ahead and ordered it. Now all of those friends order nothing else but yes you guessed it, Cantaloupe juice. You can beat this stuff. It is better than Tropicana pure premium orange juice no pulp and for me that is saying a lot.

When at Don Juan’s don’t spend too much time loitering at the entrance. You seat yourself people! See the sign that says “seat yourself”? Ok you have seen it so go ahead and find a table and wait for your server. This is how the machine works at Don Juan’s and we in Tyler like it like this. Why wait for a meaningless hostess to help you find a table when anyone with a brain can locate a clean empty table on their own? We can only hope that other Tyler restaurants learn from this ingenious idea.

Don Juan’s is located at the downtown square on Erwin and they have another location further down on West Erwin in the Mexican area of town near the brookshires dairy processing plant.

There are some obscure Mexican retail shops nearby with manicans wearing skimpy outfits and a house operating as a second hand used junk store. There is also Sam Hill Ace Hardware and lumber close by the West Erwin Don Juan’s location.

Mercados Mexican Restaurant Tyler Texas

 Mercado's Mexican Food

Mercado’s/Posada’s, Tyler, TX

8 out of 10 Stars – Rate Posado’s and Mercado’s and Give a Customer Review

If you haven’t had the chance to try out either Mercado’s or Posada’s Mexican Restaurants in Tyler, TX, you should.  With good prices, excellent food and menu choices either of these restaurants is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner, weekend or weekday. Although the restaurants are considered Mexican, the menu consists of more of a “Tex-Mex” flavor rather than authentic Mexican.  Complimentary tortilla chips and salsa available along w/fresh flour or corn tortillas as long as each diner orders another menu item as a meal, even if it‘s an appetizer. These mexican restaurants also serve barbeque quail and have been for years. Good stuff! On very rare occasions, “fresh” tortillas are questionable but I’ve very rarely experienced this.  Because of the popularity of the Tyler restaurants, long waits may be expected at typical dining hours, especially on weekends. Most wait staff is attentive to customers and food delivery is considered average as compared to most dine-in restaurants. On a couple of occasions, waiter/waitress has been some-what neglecting to our needs. But overall, any opportunity to dine at Mercado’s or Posada’s is well worth it.
