Academy Sporting Goods Store in Tyler Texas
It’s always nice when you can rely on one place for a large need, at Academy Sports and Outdoors you can find nearly any generic sport or outdoor recreation supply. Academy Sports and Outdoor is a wonderful resource for the fitness and sports communities in Tyler. It can be a lot of trouble going from sports supply store to sports supply store just to find the right size or brand of shoes, clothing, or sports equipment.
Academy
Academy Sports and Outdoor is one big place with all of these things, eliminating much of the hassle in finding the right store to suit your specific preferences, Academy brings the top names in sport supply together in one easy shopping experience. Cumberland Academy is a state funded charter school in South Tyler. It has been open for about 8 years in it’s current location – opposite the entrance to Academy Sports and just before Faulkner Park in Tyler.

This is a small, non-fee paying school serving kids from Kindergarten to 6th grade. It has a high teacher to student ratio compared to most other schools and a strict discipline policy. All students have to wear uniform. The academic achievements are high and each student has the chance to learn music and theater studies. The entrance is open to all families in the area and places are allocated by lottery – you put your child’s name down on a list and if you are lucky, then the children in your family are given a place or put on a waiting list.

The most interesting thing about Cumberland Academy is it’s future development as Tyler’s first ischool. What that means, in a nutshell, is that Cumberland is not just updating it’s teaching methods by using computers, but it is taking technology one step further. Each classroom will have a state of the art interactive teaching board and audio equipment so that the teacher can be easily heard throughout the room. Students will each have a computer to use at school and an ipod touch to take home for homework assignments. Traditional teaching methods for reading and writing will be employed too but the focus will definitely be on new technology in the classroom to prepare students for what is already becoming a computerized world. This technology has been made possible by grants.

In addition to the normal curriculum, the children will be able to specialize in the performing arts by taking an elective in violin, choir, drama or theater production skills.

Despite it’s new teaching methods, the school will still abide by the state standards and testing systems. It is not part of the Tyler Independent School District but is bound by the regulations of the Texas Education Agency.  Cumberland Academy is run by a board of governors and parent involvement is very much encouraged by volunteer hours in the school or by participation in the PTO.

The school is expanding to almost double it’s capacity this fall and will be located at a new site which is currently being purpose built at the junction of  Shiloh and Chad Drive in  Central Tyler.

Tyler Athletics

January 12th, 2010

There is another sporting goods store in Tyler I have neglected to write about until now. Tyler Athletics is to area sports programs what Gander Mountain is to sportsmen. They do not carry outdoor gear, but when it comes to athletic equipment they are extremely well stocked. The selection is not what Academy Sports is due to the size of the place however they certainly make the most of the room they have. Better still they have a small business personal touch that the larger shops can’t duplicate.

The market T.A. serves consists largely of local schools (public and private) and other community sports programs. They can fill large orders or small. The merchandise they offer for local schools looks great and is very professional.

Tyler Athletics also carries merchandise from just about all the Texas colleges, as well as professional sports teams. Signed memorabilia from any number of Texas sports celebrities is displayed around the entrance of the store and serves to validate the owner’s connection to area athletics.

Overall this is one of the better such outlets in town. It definitely surpasses Racquet and Jog for quality and selection of actual sports equipment. Not as large as Academy it does offer local customer service. They are located at 5201 S. Broadway, next to Double Dave’s Pizza. For more info visit their website at www.tylerathletics.com.  Back in the day Tyler Athletics was known as Massey and Brown Sporting Goods and was and still is the best place to get baseball and softball gear in Tyler Texas.

Great Mexican Food At An Affordable Price

January 8th, 2010

With around 1000 Mexican eateries in and around Tyler Texas ranging from the big chains to your little ‘hole in the walls’, Taqueria El Lugar is a Tyler staple. With its five locations Lugar offers everything from beef tacos to chicken burritos. And if you think a quesadilla is a thin tortilla shaped like a triangle you haven’t met Lugar’s #7. The #7 is a super quesadilla stuffed to the gills with your choice of beef, ham or chicken with cilantro, cheese and sliced avocado! Oh!-you’ll need both hands! The Super Quesadilla cost around $3.80 each

A Great Place to Bring “Out of Towners”

You have friends from out of town? You want to show them something a little less tex-mex?

Taqueria El Lugar is more authentic and will not disappoint non Tylerites. Try its newest location in the shopping center just south of The Diner  in Tyler. If you hit ‘Academy Sports’ you’ve gone way too far!

Gander Mountain in Tyler

January 8th, 2010

Over the last few years, the sporting goods mega store / museum has become the order of the day. Now, I realize I often tend to favor local business over larger chains. But in this case, I’m taking a different tack. These new stores often serve as a show case for the latest and greatest new products in the sporting goods world, sort of a Sharper Image only useful and fun.

Well Tyler now has one of its own in Gander Mountain. A visit here has something for everyone. Even my little boy is entranced by the stuffed game of all kinds which hangs on the walls. To him, it’s almost like visiting a zoo or a museum.

Admittedly the Tyler Gander Mountain, (located on South Broadway) is not the most well stocked sporting goods store in town. In comparison to someplace like Academy Sports, G.M.s market is smaller since it caters more to the outdoorsman than the athlete. It is one of the few places (other than book stores) however, where I actually enjoy browsing for browsing’s sake.

The fishing and tackle section is a vortex I find it easy to get sucked into. A visit to G.M. prior to a fishing trip increases the cost of my trip exponentially. The camping section is full of temptation as well but fortunately (or unfortunately) my budget doesn’t allow for too many impulse buys of items contained there.

It prices at Gander Mountain are not particularly low. Much of what they stock is larger, high dollar items. For those of us in the market for smaller things like fishing lures or bait the prices are slightly higher than elsewhere since the customer is essentially paying for the selection. It’s generally worth it though since a trip here is in and of itself, an experience. For more information see their website at www.gandermountain.com, or better yet, stop in for a visit. They’re located at 151 Market Square Blvd. just off South 69, in Tyler TX.
