High school baseball playoffs

April 28th, 2013

The school year is winding down and that means so is high school baseball. However, those teams who are still alive are the best of the best as playoff time is actually here and many East Texas high schools are fighting to go to the state championship game.

It starts withclass 5A where the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders of Tyler who are set to take on the Garland Sachse Mustangs in a best-of-three-game series. First pitch of the first game is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Game two is set to take place starting at noon on Saturday at Sachse High School in Garland. If the two teams split the first two games, there will be a third game to decide on a winner immediately following the game two.

Also in 5A, Longview is slated to take on Garland Naaman in another best-of-three series. The first game is slated for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Longview High School while the second game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Game three, if necessary will follow game two.

Whitehouse will represent Class 4A when it goes up against White Oak in another best-of-three series. The first game is slated for 7:30 Thursday at Red Oak High School while the second game will be 7:30 Friday night at Whitehouse. If a third game is necessary, it will be held Saturday at noon.

Class 3A will see Van and Bullard go head-to-head in one game. First pitch is slated for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Kilgore’s Driller Park. Mineola and Spring Hill will also represent Class 3A when they go head-to-head in one game, Friday at 7 p.m. at Kilgore’s Driller Park.

Former Red Raider now an Oakland Raider

April 1st, 2013

While in high school at Robert E. Lee in Tyler, Matt Flynn won a state championship. Then in college, he won the National Championship game at LSU. Now he’s on the next level, well, kind of. I guess it’s safe to say though, Flynn’s chances of winning at the next level will have to at least be put on hold since he will now be suiting up for the Oakland Raiders.

Last year, Matt Flynn was one of the biggest names (if not the biggest) in free agency before he signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said he was going to leave the job open to competition, and although we didn’t believe him, he did just that. Rookie Russell Wilson came in and surprised a ton of people and became a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year Award after leading his team into the second round of the playoffs.
Russell’s play was proof that the starting job was his, and Flynn’s future was in question. Now, the former Red Raider is an Oakland Raider.

The past decade has seen Oakland go through quarterbacks like paper towels. Of course, that’s probably because defenses have torn quarterbacks apart like paper towels. Since 2003, no one has lasted more than two years as the starting quarterback for the silver and black.

Flynn isn’t guaranteed the starting position but if he gets, he’ll replace Carson Palmer who is coming off his second year for the team. The Raiders have also seen Jason Campbell, JeMarcus Russell, Daunte Culpepper, Andrew Walter, Kerry Collins and and Rich Gannon since 2003. Let’s just hope the Tyler native has better luck.

To Call The Station to Find the Final Score

August 27th, 2012

We all know that high school football is big in Texas. Actually, that’s a major understatement. It’s huge, and until you work with high school football in one way or another or you’ve seen the curtain pulled back a little, you might not know just how big it is.

I’ve worked for a few different news outlets in Texas covering high school football and that’s given me more insight as to how big it really is, just like everything else in Texas. After covering a game, I will often go up the office where phones are ringing off the hook. Fans want to know who won different games throughout the area and coaches are calling to report their scores.

Thankfully though, if you live in Tyler or somewhere else in the East Texas area, you have no reason to call radio and TV stations or newspaper offices to ask for scores thanks to www.etfinalscore.com
I wrote for ET Final Score last year and found just how convenient it is. Fans can read articles, look up stats through the season and even look up live stats and scores on Friday nights.

So, if you’re at Rose Stadium watching the Red Raiders and you want to know what the score in the John Tyler game is, just pull out your smart phone and pull etfinalscore.com. Seriously, unless you’re going to report some scores, don’t use the phone to call the station and ask what Chapel Hill is doing. It’ll be on the website soon if it’s not already.

Fox Sports Bus, Fan Express to Come Back to Tyler

July 31st, 2012

The Fox Sports Southwest Fan Express bus came through Tyler for the second time this baseball season Saturday and it’s scheduled to come back in late August.

Fans riding the bus get free transportation, free tickets and official Texas Rangers gear as well free food and beverages courtesy of Dr Pepper and Snapple. What’s not to like? Heck, on top of that, they get to meet Kaime and Liddy, the Fox Sports Southwest girls.

Jim Knox of Fox Sports will also interview fans from the bus live during the game telecast, but if the Kaime and Liddy aren’t reason enough to go, Knox probably isn’t either.

The seats are great seats, located in the outfield about in section 9.

Rangers Fans who ride the bus this past Saturday weren’t quite as fortunate as I was when I took the trip because they saw their team fall to the Chicago White Sox 5-2.

The game I went to on June 27 was great. It was almost like watching a home run derby. It was too close for comfort though because both teams were scoring runs left and right, but fortunately, it was the Rangers who came on top in a 13-9 final.

Not that all that matters, but what does matter is these trips are made possible thanks not only to Fox Sports Southwest but also ESPN East Texas, 92.1 in Tyler who partnered with Fox Sports Southwest.

Sports Talk host Bill Coates takes calls every day on his show leading up to the trips, and each day gave a pair of tickets to a random caller.

As mentioned before, the Fan Express bus is scheduled to come through Tyler again Thursday August 23 when the Rangers play host to the Minnesota Twins.

It’s not like there aren’t enough incentives to try to win a pair of tickets on that bus, but an extra reason to go is the fact Wednesday night is Dollar Dog Night at the ballpark.

If you go on the bus trip, you’ll be given a five dollar gift certificate for concessions which means you can buy yourself five dogs.

For a chance to win two tickets, call into sports talk within two weeks of the game and weigh in on your sports topic of choice. The show runs Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m. and the show hotline number is 903-593-5822. For more information, call the station anytime at 903-593-2519.
