A Better Way To Get Coffee

January 8th, 2010

Few stores have genuine quaintness, quaintness is an elusive gem, sought after by struggling middle aged small business women everywhere, almost as if it took precedent over any actual business concern. They look up to the Hallmark store as a mentor imitating it’s tiny porcelain bears and potpourri fumigation but nay, for true quaintness escapes them all, for you cannot make quaintness, but it must come to you, as the product of the secret quaint inside every person. When you step into Brady’s Coffee it is immediately obvious that Mr. Brady has much more quaint than he knows what to do with. While soft Celtic hymns play in the background I notice several old men taking turns harassing each other with stories of farm equipment and shouting nonsensical but unmistakably friendly greetings to the friends of theirs just arriving for the day.
.
Lining the walls of the store are large glass jars filled with a variety of different coffees and teas. Above the jars hangs local art work, a lot of it belonging to one of the elderly regulars sitting at the table, ready to tell you which he likes best. Ordering coffee is a lot more like having a short conversation about coffee and then getting what you had just been talking about.

Also, while ordering I suggest trying to get a glimpse of the Lego castles sitting on the shelves in the back, an extremely innovative move by Brady in raising his stores level of quaintness in a subtle but appropriately masculine way. Brady’s coffee shop in Tyler epitomizes the idea of the local business. It has a loyal following and an atmosphere that’s something different than the sudo hipster and soccer mom seen you’ll find at Starbucks. Brady is doing what he loves in a way that he loves it, with surroundings that describe very well his own personality. But why settle on the surroundings when his actual personality is there waiting to serve you coffee.

A Mothers Frustration With Fast Food Play Areas

There is nothing much more wonderful than to see the excited faces a child as you drive up to the golden arches. I love to watch children run through the fast food restaurant and throw off their shoes and run through the brightly colored tubes, like a small hamster running through its cage.

When your small children run up to the Tyler TX play area, they look at it like a mountain they have to conquer. They bravely climb through the dark tubes until they finally find a small plexi-glass window to squish their little faces against to see if their parents are still watching. They finally see the bright yellow curvy slide which they cannot see the end. They slide down and come out a hero, proud of their great accomplishment.

But one of the most frustrating things as a parent is when your child, excitidely runs back up the tubes but finds older and bigger children taking over their defeated territory. Your children fearfully come back down away from the aggressive children. The older children began crawling past your young child, pushing them down. Disoriented, your child tries to find the exit. Your child cries are drowned out by the excited screams of the older children, whose parents are socializing to each other, not giving their children a second glance. They fight trying to find the yellow reflection of the slide. Finally, the slide was just steps away. As they slide down, hoping for the relief of the crowded play area, they slide right into two children climbing up the slide. They begin to yell at your child for running into them. They begin to scream that all the little children need to get out of the play area. Your poor child begins to cry louder for help as they are stuck in the middle of a slide. You have to get up and peal off the older children to free your child. Finally they get a breath of fresh air.

Frustrated you take your child and leave the play area, the older children’s parent still have not looked up to see their children bullying around toddlers and wrestling right in the way of other small children. Your kid cries harder as you leave, thinking that they are being punished for something because they can no longer play.

This is to all the parents out there, watch your children as they play on the play area. If there are small children being pushed and hit around by your kid, get them out of the play area. And if they are bigger than the height recommendation, don’t let them play in the tubes, especially when there are small children playing. Why have we lost the idea of manners? “Excuse me” and “sir, and mam” has been lost from this generation’s vocabulary. Teach your children to be kind to other children, and then maybe we would not have this problem.

Best Known Local Lindale Coffee House

January 4th, 2010

Rockwell’s Coffee Brewery

Lindale’s coffee shop, Rockwells, may not live up to the taste of Starbucks but it is the most popular coffee shop in the Lindale area. It is a great place to hang out with your friends. Nearby in Mount Sylvan is an even more interesting Coffee Shop known as Mount Sylvan Coffee and Mercantile that is also worth checking out.

Enjoy a hot cup of coffee, or one of the “classics” such as a latte, cappuccino or espresso. The drink menu may not be as long as Starbucks’ but you will be able to find something that you want. For the non coffee drinkers Rockwells offers different teas and Fruit drinks. Also if you are hungry they serve snacks, desserts, and even meals. Come enjoy a sandwich or salad in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
The artsy atmosphere makes it comfortable to hang out. Couches and comfortable chairs helps when you are trying to get that midterm paper done, or to play games with your family or friends. Friday and Saturdays there is live music. Games are available there to make your visit more enjoyable.

Wendy’s Headache

January 4th, 2010

Fast food is good for one thing, fast cheap food for the person on the go. You think that it would be very important to be accurate filling a costumer’s full order. Rarely has Wendy’s  in Tyler Texas gotten my order right with out me having to go into the store to correct their mistakes. Even if you clearly state your simple order, they still seem to not understand.

One day I went out to eat with my dad to Wendy’s as I walked up to the counter I asked a simple question, “what dressing do you have for your salads?” The question was simple enough but it was even more simple since the young man had the list of dressings right in front of him. He stumbled through every word. Not to critisize the young man but I have never heard of a dressing called “veng…van…whatever that is”. If an employee cannot read the menu leave them to flip the patties.

One of the best things about Wendy’s is the famous frosty. Being such a popular menu item you would think that it would be available, at the Lindale Wendy’s (right off the interstate) seems like it’s ice cream machine is always out of order. But this little issue is just one of the many things wrong with this fast food store. The employees are extremely rude. More accounts than one have I been gripped at because they did not get my order right. I have worked at places that I did not want to work, and dreaded going to work as much as the next guy, but you smile and be polite, and don’t take your issues out on costumers.

I have found that every once in awhile you can get something that tastes somewhat like food at Wendy’s. I despise the service and attitude at this fast food chain its ridiculous! I know each store should be different with a different attitude, but some how it’s the over-all attitude of the food chain.

If you are trying to get your food and go on your way, I would skip Wendy’s. If you want what you ordered without headache and without having to go into the store to correct their mistakes about three different times, Wendy’s is not your restaurant.

The Hidden Gate Tyler TX

January 4th, 2010

Tucked away in the middle of Tyler is the small antique shop and restaurant, Hidden Gate. Hidden Gate is known for its quiet atmosphere and homemade delicious food.

Two rooms packed full of antiques and beautiful tables. This would not be a problem for me, but when you have children it becomes pretty much impossible to enjoy yourself in a place like this. There are so many breakable items placed on the edge of shelves, and shelves so close to the tables, children can easily grab and break things.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are available. Hidden gate also has catering for buffet entrees and “hors D’oeuvers”. Desserts are homemade and available. Try their pies, cobblers, cakes and cheesecakes.

Floral wreaths and floral arrangements are also for sale. Check out the website to see the beautiful arrangements on sale depending on the up coming holidays and events.

Enjoy an afternoon tea with your friends. When you come here the music is relaxing and soft so you can actually hear each other talk. There is a great selection of teas and desserts for those outings for your friends. Try the raspberry, peach, strawberry-lemon, or orange spice teas.

If you are hosting a party you can come to Hidden Gate’s Tyler Texas Restaurant and pick up a food tray. Party trays include, cheese trays, sandwich trays, fruit trays and relish trays and pies. Also if you are going on a picnic and don’t have time to pack a lunch, you can pick up a box lunch. You can choose between about five different sandwich and two different wraps. Also you can pick up a Breakfast box, with different homemade croissants sandwiches.

You can go gift shopping here. Hidden Gate sells all different home décor such as candles, platters, lamps, mirrors and so much more. Hidden Gate carries brand name items such as, Acscent Candles, Secret Garden, Time & Again, Crackling Wick, Lady Primrose, and Olio. You can also find jewelry, purses, scarves and much more. You can also use their helpful Lay-a-away plan to help you be able to pay for the perfect gift.

Enjoy a quiet stress free meal but be very careful not to break anything!
