Currents is a small restaurant hidden away next to Tyler Junior College. I wanted to throw a small private party, but I wanted it to be elegant and something different. We called the restaurant for information of how they serve their guests and what they do for parties. I was extremely impressed with the options that the owner laid out for me. Although I could not afford some of the options that he gave me he was still extremely generous. He allowed me to meet with him about having a specialty menu that I got to pick out.
I went to the small Tyler restaurant and he showed me around. Up stairs the dinning rooms are very formal with a nice deck and out side seating. Down stairs is another dinning area, which is not as nice and had very dim lighting. I was kind of disappointed in the set up of the place, because it was not very welcoming. The down stairs dinning area was reserved for my party and fit about twenty people in it. The service was extremely personal and private. I ordered the veal to start which was perfectly tender and amazingly tasteful. Although I had to live through the gasps of my young cousins when they heard I was eating a “baby cow”, it was very good.
They were kind enough to serve three dishes that I had asked for as a special menu, and everyone seemed like they enjoyed the food. We were read the amazing different desserts that all sounded great and were dipped in chocolate and drizzled in raspberry sauce. I tried the chocolate moose cake with raspberry sauce. It was a revelation. The rich taste danced in every bite. I am usually not a big fan of dark chocolate but this creamy cake that melted in my mouth was amazing. Everything was perfect but the check was rather large. But that is coming from a person who’s view of eating out is Chili’s or Chick-fil-a. I had an amazing time and both the food and service were definitely excellent. I will keep going to Currents, but I will just have to wait for that pay check to come in.

The Olive Garden is a chain of restaurants serving Italian style food. It is more upmarket than other American Italian eateries in Tyler and the prices reflect this, but the quality of food and service are superior to say – Carinos or Little Italy.
The Olive Garden is quite large and has several rooms and corners. The central bar area is light and airy with little round tables and quiet music playing – perfect for a daytime lunch or evening drinks. In the other areas there are tables which can seat larger parties. Some of the booths are very cozy with low level lighting. I really like the use of lighting in the Olive Garden in Tyler. It is also spotlessly clean with nice décor including healthy real plants and bottles of Italian wine on display.
We went with our family one Sunday lunchtime. It was busy, but not noisy and although it was nearly full, it didn’t appear crowded. We were greeted and seated rapidly at a table by the window. Our server instantly appeared bringing us menus and drinks, and offered us salad and bread. The salad came in a huge glass bowl and 4 Italian style pottery side plates. The bread sticks were warm and fresh – more like rolls than ‘sticks’ as we would know them in Europe. The salad and bread are included with the price of the meal but you can pay extra for a dipping sauce for the bread if you want, or choose from many of the different appetizers.
The menu is clear and there is an additional picture menu of the ‘special dishes’ The problem is, as my husband, commented, that the dishes never look as good in real life as they do on the pictures! A children’s menu occupied our kids with coloring and puzzles. There are 7 meal choices for the under 12 which include grilled cheese and macaroni but also mini grown up meals like fetticine and ravioli. My daughter had filled ravioli which was undoubtedly made from fresh pasta. I was impressed to see that broccoli featured on a kid’s menu in Texas. My son had chicken and broccoli and it was really nicely cooked – not mushy! Meals were $5.99 and included a drink which could be juice or milk, instead of the usual fountain drinks.
On the main menu the entrees are divided into meat, fish and … There are healthy options available – look for the picture of the Olive leaf to find low fat choices.
The desserts are extremely tempting. We chose a Tiramisu and heavenly chocolate mousse cake. The kids had huge bowls of the best chocolate ice-cream I have tasted. Sadly the cream topping was synthetic. It seemed odd to me that the chefs would cut corners in this way when everything else was fresh and authentic.
Finally, the wine list is impressive. The house Chianti comes highly recommended.
I would say that eating at the Olive Garden was a pleasant surprise. For a chain of American restaurants, it has a nice atmosphere and the food is good. I think it would be a great venue for a party or a family get together.

Tyler has two popular Chinese buffet restaurants; China King, and China Café. Both of these two restaurants are Chinese Buffets, that are fully stocked with sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, sesame seed and all the soy sauce your heart desires.
China Café has some how stood the test of time even thought it’s neighboring building has been the home to many unsuccessful Chinese restaurants. The Chinese restaurant has been a topic of restaurant disappointments, but for some odd reason I have returned. I guess it must be the enduring sounds of broken English, or the fact that it is all you can eat for less than ten dollars, or possibly it is the lighted Chinese art that draws me back, I don’t know. Whatever the reason I know its not the food. The buffet is heated by hot water and if you are lucky you might be there when the water starts to flood over the buffet bar and run into the floor. I think that I have been there about five times that they had issues with the water. The best time to go to the Chinese restaurant is when it is the busiest. If you go to China Café during a slow time than you will never know how long the food has been sitting in the metal crates.
A few years ago Tyler welcomed another Chinese buffet restaurant called China King. I never have experienced a water problem at China King. Most of the food is surprisingly fresh compared to other buffets here in Tyler. That statement is not necessarily saying much about the restaurant.
As you walk up to the front door you will feel welcomed by five foot cat statues and fat Buda statues, and a nice smiling Asian man trying to communicate to tell us where to sit. The China King has a sushi buffet that will please you every raw fish desire. For the most part the sushi actually does not taste like a soft piece of rubber. Although you really will not see your waiter while you eating there, somehow your drink seems to be filled constantly and your dirty plates are always removed. I think that the waiters sit and wait until you are at the buffet to actually approach your table. But even though there is no interaction between the waiters and customers, we are expected to tip. I am necessarily a “cheap” person but I do not understand why there is no interaction. It gets frustrating, to say the least.
It isn’t a Chinese restaurant without the dessert part and cheap free ice cream. I don’t really understand what is Chinese about three different melons, Jello cut into small blocks and banana pudding, but it seems that every Chinese restaurant’s desserts is only filled with these things.
Even though I do get frustrated with the buffet experiences I do leave full and got my money’s worth, so I do guess that the restaurants did its job. Most people go out to eat for the comfort of being served on, which is lacking, to say the least, in the Chinese buffet industry.

Caffé Tazza
4815 Old Bullard Road
Tyler, TX 75703-1214

Tyler’s small Italian style café, Caffe Tazza, has caught the eye of many artists and musicians. The small café is a great place to grab a decent priced coffee beverage or a great pastry, or even a light meal.
Besides having the usually light sandwiches and coffee house drinks, Caffe Tazza allows local musicians and artists to show off their talents. The café holds shows for all different artist, painters, and photographers and all types of artists. It is great for Tyler to have place that local artists can be noticed for their talents. These shows are held Thursday nights from 5pm until 9pm.
The small coffee shop is a nice quiet atmosphere and as you walk into the café you feel relaxed. It is a great place to do work or homework, because you can focus and concentrate on your work. It is nice to have a place like this available for anyone.
Really the off putting thing about the café is the fact that the sandwiches that are served to you just sit behind glass. I don’t know how long they have been sitting there, but it is unappetizing to see the tuna salad sandwich sitting there and the bread getting soggy from the juices of the meat. The whole idea makes me turned off to the food.
Caffe Tazza in Tyler may be a great place to hang out, drink a hot cup of coffee, and to get in touch with the local art community, but I would not go there expecting a great meal, just a great time.

There are not many things more annoying than turning on the television and seeing the obnoxious masked man with ghetto gold chains creepily looking into women’s bedroom windows, or lying in bed with another grown man. The “King” has completely turned me off towards the fast food chain restaurant. Even though the king has surpassed in successfully creeping out the country, they had to throw in the whopper man and his son Jr. (Jr. whopper), and the newest spokesman. The newest spokesman looks normal but he cant hold Burger King’s burger because his hands are too small. Just to let the fast food companies know, creepy is NOT funny.
Tyler’s Burger King population has been growing this past year. They built one off the loop near Vine. And a second one is being built in front of the popular Carmike movie theatre. I was sad to hear of the closing of Italian fast food restaurant, Fazoli’s; but I was even sadder that the building was a new home of Burger King. I guess I did not know that so many people liked Burger King.
I guess I should look pass the crown and try Burger King again but it might take a little while before the nightmares end.
