1 Pounder Burger in Tyler Texas

May 27th, 2010

image1062543920.jpgThe one pounder burger in Tyler TX is back at the Tyler airport. We went to Skyline Cafe today for lunch and I ordered the Belly Buster. I won’t be eating it all today 🙂

Yamato Sushi and Seafood Japanese Restaurant

May 6th, 2010

No I have nothing to say about Yamato food. They just put up their sign and so I thought I’d say hey I saw their sign. Pretty lame review at this point. This Japanese restaurant in Tyler is next to Mercado’s. Talk about some serious foot traffic!

I think their closeness to Mercado’s Mexican restaurant will get them half their customers all by itself.

Hopefully they will have good food!

Update: Several people have said they have very good food for both their Hibachi grill and their Sushi.

I still have not tried it yet but it is really fancy inside from what I heard from my brother in law.

Veranda Indian Cuisine in Tyler TX

April 29th, 2010

VERANDA INDIAN CUISINE
3310 Troup Highway
Tyler TX 75701
Phone: 903 593 3600
Open Tues – Sun 11.30 – 2.30pm
Tues – Sat  5.30-9.30pm

Pssst! Guess what? Tyler has an Indian Restaurant!

OK so it might not be very authentic, BUT it is curry and the atmosphere is definitely a step up from most of the other Asian places – like Basil Thai for example, which is little more than a takeout.

The Veranda is situated at the back of the Ramada hotel, behind Benigans on Troup.

It is not very large but does have some outside seating (oh yes!) by the hotel swimming pool. The bar is right next door to the inside seating area so it may not be ideal for anti-smokers. Having said that a hotel bar is rarely busy and it didn’t seem smoky when we were there.

The servers looked Indian which was encouraging. They were super-polite, and courteous.. They brought spicy poppadums with condiments to start and my glass of water was never allowed to reach half empty. They were keen to help us make our food choices thinking we were unfamiliar with Indian food. The only drink served to us was water. However, there is a bar inside so perhaps we should have ordered a glass of wine from there to go with the meal.

The menu included a variety of meats, seafoods and vegetables – including chicken, lamb, goat shrimp and fish (no beef – cows are sacred in India) and there was a choice of Indian breads. If you are vegetarian then the Veranda is definitely a place to try as they have plenty of vegetable, Tofu-like cheese dishes and a delicious chickpea item called Chana Masasla. All the entrees were served with plain basmati rice or naan bread but noodles and fried rices were available on request.

We asked about how spicy the meals would be. There was a mark on the menu for those which were traditionally more spicy and as each meal is cooked to order, it was possible to ask for mild, medium or hot. Most dishes were actually mild in flavor. One of our party requested a hot vindaloo and was disappointed that it wasn’t very spicy – I think the sauces have been toned down for the East Texan palate but they have forgotten that we do enjoy a good bit of chili in our food!

On the whole the food was good. The quality of the meat was fine – I’m always picky about that! However, as a regular consumer of Indian food (in a former life!) I found the dishes I tried a bit bland, even mediocre.

The price was fair – $12 for an entrée, $4-8 for an appetizer and $5 for dessert. Not inexpensive but as it is somewhere different to go, quite acceptable.

With the smell of curry undoubtedly wafting up to the hotel rooms above I can’t see the Veranda lasting long in this location unless curry suddenly becomes incredibly popular in Tyler. So- be adventurous and go and experience it soon!

Chilis in Lindale Texas

April 22nd, 2010

Chilis
3210 S Main St
Lindale
Tx 75771
903 882 3227

For those that don’t know – Chilis is an American and once-upon-a-time vaguely Mexican restaurant with a bar. They have burgers, Tex-mex , chicken, ribs, the odd salad (not as healthy an option as you might think) steaks, plus monstrous desserts and margaritas.

I am a fairly easy-to-please foodie but Chilis in Lindale is quite frankly, horrible. I have simply NO idea why American families would subject themselves to this extremely high calorie, often pre-cooked, junk. I can only assume that with so many locations nationwide, that there is some comfort in eating somewhere familiar. Or perhaps the bar makes it popular (not many of those in Lindale). Maybe it is because at Chili’s the prices are reasonable for a family of four or for those sharing a meal. Maybe it’s just because it’s near Walmart and the I20 and the coloring on the menu keeps the children quiet. There must be reasons, because it can’t be the food!

The place itself is dark and smoky. The bar is always busy and loud and the large amount of smokers mean that the smoke penetrates everywhere. Chilis in Lindale is also very busy. Consequently, service is poor, the servers are overworked and if you go there in the evening, expect a poor meal from the overwhelmed kitchen staff too.

We had cheese and brocoli soup to start which was more like a thick cheese sauce than soup, and crispy onions with ranch. These seemed very fatty so I looked up the nutritional information afterwards and found to my horror – that this appetizer contained more calories than a woman my size should have for the whole day!

We also ate chicken crispers (dry and nasty) fajitas (more greasy than you could imagine) and the kids shared grilled cheese and corn dogs. Vegetable options were available but poorly cooked and unappetizing. From my observation of the steaks going to other tables, I would say, don’t waste your money. I did like the idea of the sweet shots – small sized desserts but don’t be tempted by a brownie sundae, they are around 1300 calories too! The choice of Margaritas is pretty large but they are quite expensive. Beer comes in frosted mugs which is good on a hot day.

All in all, Chili’s is a poor choice for a meal out. I would seriously say – for your healths sake and for your mood, don’t do it! Try Posados across the road for TexMex or the Cracker Barrel for country fare.

I’m sure that somewhere in the US the Chili’s Grill must have a good reputation – but not Lindale Chili’s! There is also a Chilis in Tyler on the West SW loop. Perhaps that one is better!

Egg and I breakfast in Tyler TX

The Egg and I

150 East 9th Street
Tyler Texas 75701
Phone: 903 592 3447

Open from 6am -2pm daily

The Egg and I is a wonderful place for a gourmet breakfast!

Any way you want it, they have eggs  – and the chefs are definitely eggsperts at serving them. Omelettes, frittatas, pancakes, eggs benedict, special skillets, Mexican variations on the egg theme and so on and so on. The choice is overwhelming (and delicious!) Call me old fashioned, but I ordered just plain crispy bacon and eggs – and they were cooked to perfection.  My friend had the Waffle Express breakfast and the children had scrambled eggs and bacon with an English muffin. Thumbs up all round! Hearty but manageable portions, everything fresh and hot, and bottomless cups of lovely Hazelnut coffee to wash it all down. Perfect..

The service could not be faulted. From the moment we entered and were seated to our final goodbye from the server, we were treated to polite, rapid and friendly service.

The place itself is really nice – very clean, light and airy and decorated really tastefully . There are 2 rooms, one of which can be reserved for parties. I love the outdoor seating area on the ‘patio’ and the fact that they play classical music and serve everything without using anything plastic or disposable. You feel quite pampered eating breakfast here – this is no truck stop!

The menu is extensive for breakfast. I should note that there are many things which aren’t eggy and some healthy options like fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies and wholemeal pancakes as well. Lunch is also served at the Egg and I and the choices include salads, sandwiches and soups. Here are some examples of the slightly different options: Veggie Greek Wrap, Chicken Apple Walnut sandwich on raisin bread and Fajita salad. The ‘triple play’ is a great option for the indecisive amongst us – it includes half a sandwich, a cup of soup and a half salad! I would imagine these items are made with the same expertise and attention to detail as the breakfasts.

Eating breakfast at the Egg and I will set you back around $10 a head including drinks. Children’s meals are $5. This may seem like quite a lot to spend on breakfast but it really is a very nice place to have breakfast and you might just find yourself relaxing here for most of the morning, getting your money’s worth in coffee!

One final comment – gift cards are available and all orders can be made ‘to go.’

Other restaurants like the Egg and I are the International House of Pancakes and The Diner.
