Popeye’s Chicken in Tyler… Again!

December 11th, 2012

popeyesI should start off this article by acknowledging that I may in fact, be a latecomer to this subject, but there are a couple of businesses just opened in Tyler to whom I thought I’d offer some free publicity. For the last couple of months my son has watched the development of what he calls Popeye’s “Bacon.” (I’m not entirely sure why he calls it bacon rather than chicken, but he does).

Anyway I promised him that when it was complete and open for business we’d give it a try. For weeks I put it off for a couple of reasons, namely I didn’t want to spend my sparse income eating out, but also because I didn’t want to spend an entire evening waiting in line. And that’s not much of an exaggeration folks. The line was literally around the restaurant and down the street.

Well, as the public anticipation has finally subsided a bit, I finally ventured out this past weekend and fulfilled my promise to my son. Even at this late date the new franchise was far from slow. We were probably four cars back in the drive through. I was actually surprised by how quickly the line moved considering the newness of the facility and the trainees.

Now, obviously I’ve been to Popeye’s Chicken before so I knew what to expect. I ordered two po- boy sandwich combos, one mild chicken (for my son), and a fried shrimp for myself.  Both were delicious. Tyler has tried Cajun food before, in a number of different incarnations, and for some reason none has really lasted. I realize that Popeye’s is, at best Cajun food for novices, but I’m hoping that serving it alongside something as popular as chicken may help it stick around a bit longer.

I also have to respect the management’s decision to strike out and try another chicken restaurant in a market with a lot of competition, and a terrible economy.  I wish you all the luck in the world Popeye’s on the west loop in Tyler! May our burgeoning relationship be long and prosperous for both of us!

What About Kabob?

What About Kabob? And His Gyros is a small restaurant across the street from Schlotzsky’s and Chuck E Cheese and offers the Gyro sandwich. This place is a small little Gyro sandwich shop but offers a lot of variety in sandwich choices.

The place has almost instantly become a hit in Tyler and the few times I have been there I have seen at least 2 people I knew.

I often find people checking in here using the popular Foursquare and Facebook check-in service.

There is a signature wall at the place where you can write your name and a little message.

I think overall you will find the food taste and quality to be great and a quick turn around time in getting your food to your table.

To tip or not to tip? The question of tipping the Sonic car hops has many different opinions and answers. Many people think that they should not tip because it is fast food and you are eating in your car. You probably will have to clean up your own trash out of your car. The car hops do not get paid minimum wage most of the time because they are expected to get tips.

I don’t really know where I stand on the issue. When I have sat in my car and the car hop brought my food out to me I usually give them a small tip like a dollar, I may give more if they actually still wore skates. When you are paying with a card at the drive up, you do not get the choice to tip. So if Sonic made it easy and clearer if you were suppose to tip the car hops, maybe more people would.

I am not a big fan of the Sonic food. There really are two reasons to go to Sonic: sand volleyball, and drinks. Many Sonics in Tyler do not have the sand volleyball court, or the play area. The only thing that those Sonics have going for them is the large selections of Sonic drinks and ice cream treats.

For some reason Sonic ice is the best ice around. The other night I was having a huge craving for a Sonic Snickers Blast. The Sonic was suppose to about an hour and half after I got there, but when I asked for my ice cream treat they had informed me that they already had shut down and cleaned the ice cream machine. This is a really annoying thing that fast food places do.

If the restaurant is not closed I expect them to serve everything on the menu. There really is no reason to go to sonic if they wont serve the menu that they claim they serve the WHOLE menu all day!

McDonalds Wedding

If you are tying to find a great wedding idea that is cheap, you may want to consider the new Hong Kong trend and throw your wedding at a local McDonalds. I am not kidding when I say that this has become a Chinese trend. The weddings have become a real McDonalds’ experience with balloon dresses, apple pie tower for a wedding cake, and a toast with soft drinks (since alcohol is not allowed since they still want the family friendly atmosphere).

I am pretty traditional when it comes to weddings so I think that this is pretty crazy idea, but “to each his own”. Hopefully the McDonalds in Hong Kong are cleaner than the ones in Tyler and do not smells so much like dirty feet and bad body deodorant. I would not understand why someone would want their wedding at a fast food restaurant, but I guess the catering would be easy and who expects good catering at a wedding anyway? Especially that they do not allow the wedding party to rent out the whole store.

I guess that this would be a really cheap way of having a wedding. Why spent hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars on a wedding dress when you can just get one made from colorful balloons? I mean when are you going to wear it again anyway? McDonalds has become more than just a place for birthday parties. Weddings, anniversary parties, and vowel renewal ceremonies have been thrown at the fast food restaurants in China. China has had some really great ideas in the past and some crazy ones, I think that this idea is going to go on the list of crazy ideas.

McDonalds’ Monopoly Game

October 17th, 2010

Everyone has heard of the Monopoly game at McDonalds’ fast food restaurant. This year they have another great list of prizes. The grand prize of $1,000,000 is the hardest to come by. The hardest piece to win is Boardwalk. McDonalds has many other cash prizes, Beach resorts, family vacations, cars, $5,000 Wal-Mart gift cards, free Red Box rentals, and of course free food and drinks.

When you go to McDonalds and order large drinks, some breakfast foods, large fries, and some Burgers. I have heard stories of people all over the country and the world, but I have not won anything more than a free large fry, McNugget meal, or a small coffee. I think that it is funny that they are giving away free Red Box rentals this year, but I have not seen tickets for them yet.

Pull out your board and tickets and compare to see if you have these tickets that are the rarest ones:

1. Short Line

2. Boardwalk

3. Pennsylvania Avenue

4. Ventnor Avenue

5. Kentucky Avenue

6. Tennessee Avenue

7. Virginia Avenue

8. Vermont Avenue

9. Mediterranean Avenue

10. Golden Avenue

Win some money in the store and online! I think that McDonalds should offer a free gym membership for the person that eats enough McDonalds’ food to actually win something.
