The Granary

October 31st, 2010

The Granary in Tyler is a great place to find all your health needs. The Granary has a great selection of organic fruit and vegetables. When I am pregnant I tend to have quite a bit of morning sickness. The granary has many different natural ways to help you hold down the food. If you are trying to find something I recommend getting ginger candies from the granary. This was one of the only ways that I could ever keep from throwing up. The Granary has many different vitamins and supplements. They have all the vitamins that your body needs when you are pregnant, such as vitamin D, iron pills, and prenatal vitamins.

The Granary has many different microwavable foods that kids will love, like Mac & Cheese, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and simple fun snacks.

Weight Loss Management in Tyler, Texas

July 20th, 2010

When it comes to weight loss management there are as many methods as there are fast food choices.  Only a handful of methods, however, will give results that are healthy and long lasting.  While it may seem easier to swallow a few pills every day than to count calories and jump around till you can barely breathe, you will ultimately be disappointed with the results.  Finding a doable weight loss management program is the key to your success.

Usually, a good weight loss management program will start you out by having you assess your current situation and set a reasonable goal.  It will also provide you with a diet plan or at the very least a list of foods that are good for weight loss.  Programs such as Weight Watchers usually have several locations in an area, Tyler, Texas included.  These programs add the element of accountability by requiring you to attend weekly meeting to record your progress and discuss with a group what your experiences have been.

There are also plenty of websites you can access from your Tyler, Texas home for weight loss management.  Many are free for basic membership and provide forums where you can anonymously interact with other like-minded dieters if you are uncomfortable with face to face meetings.  These websites will often provide a calorie tracker that allows you to see exactly how much you have consumed if you are honest inputting your data.  You may also be able to track your activity levels and see how many calories you have burned.

East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market

East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

East Texas State Fair Farmers Market

I’ve heard it said that every man has at least one good novel in him, I hope that is true. I think it is also true that most people have a have a gardener in there somewhere. I very much enjoy the process of experimenting with different plants and watching things grow in Tyler TX. For me however the journey is something of its own reward. I am a nominal gardener at best. I generally do ok, and I enjoy eating the fresh fruits and vegetables I grow, but I certainly don’t produce enough to supply all my nutritional needs. In recent years I have less time to devote to the pursuit of gardening, but I definitely miss the process, as well as the fresh food.

The East Texas State Fair Farmer’s Market has as its mission to “promote a sense of community within the City of Tyler, to bring fresh local food to the public and to provide farmers and producers a place to sell their goods at a reasonable price.” For those of us who don’t have our own farms or gardens, the Farmers Market offers access to quality local produce. Not only does the community stand to eat better, but the money spent at the market stays home in Tyler. And the venue offers more than just fruits and vegetables. There are booths that sell fresh eggs, honey, stone ground corn meal, even craft items like quilted goods and candles as well.

The Farmers Market is open three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), from seven in the morning to one in the afternoon. It runs from May eight to August fourteenth. For those interested in becoming a vendor at the local Farmer’s Market there is a fairly extensive application as well as a list of rules. Interested readers can find the application by going to http://www.etstatefair.com/documents/ETSFFARMERSMKTVENDORCONTRACT2010.pdf. For general info visit: http://www.etstatefair.com/farmers-market.php. Different products peak at different times obviously, so I also recemend checking out the market’s Facebook page in order to see what kind of produce is likely to be available. Just click on the link below to go to the site directly.  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tyler-TX/East-Texas-State-Fair-Farmers-Market/10150123220645427?filter=1,

So while I may not have time to grow my own garden this year, I can still enjoy the freshest possible food and keep more of my dollars home in East Texas.

Granary Health Food Stores

The store in Tyler is small and slightly dark (as all the shelves are loaded with products) but the service is great – the assistants know so much about health and can make recommendations for you at the drop of a hat.

There is a large section for dietary supplements, vitamins and herbal remedies, protein powders, almost a whole aisle of tea! and also organic produce, which is locally grown. They also have refrigerated items like goats milk, free range eggs, tofu and organic yogurts. In the chest freezers lining tone side of the shop there are cuts of frozen meat and other freezer food, including our favorite Ezekiel bread. Of course the Granary stocks other health foods – lots of cereals, nuts, beans and pulses and dried fruit too.

The Granary has some cosmetics and beauty products too plus essential oils. They have cruelty free and environmentally friendly cleaning products.

I buy lots of things at the Granary but here are 2 of my favorite products – Sambucol (it really works to prevent colds!) and Focus vitamins for my son – who, whilst not ADDH, does have a tendency to drift in class. I frequently fail to resist buying some organic almond butter which by the way, is a better price than at the usual grocery stores.

Last week I had to find some food for a friend who follows a gluten and dairy free diet – plus she has some allergies to other things too. The assistant was so helpful in finding me things to send to her – I was amazed that there are so many alternatives to ‘normal food’ out there!

Finally the Granary is a good source of information for alternative medicine and has details on local organic food co-ops, massage therapists and so on.
