Affordable Quality Cabinet Makers in Tyler Texas

When deciding on cabinets for our home remodeling job I had to decide between those premade cabinets you see at Lowes and Home Depot and the custom ones you see in those fancy Cascade homes. The price difference is dramatic especially when installing them yourselves. Sure Home Depot and Lowes has custom cabinets also but their prices seem out of this world compared with what you can get with local custom cabinet makers. I had no idea about the cabinet making business, prices, and quality of product our there going into this but I quickly found out a lot.

When picking your cabinet company that will deliver and or install your cabinets you really want to do a little consumer research. Thank goodness you came to this article as I will give you my own consumer research and experience from picking and ultimately choosing a custom cabinet maker in Tyler Texas. What ends up being on most peoples minds when going into the cabinet buying process is what about Lowes and Home Depot cabinets?

The main problem I have with Lowes and Home Depot is that you are locked into a set dimension. Sure you can have custom orders with these home remodeling companies but that is when these companies really hit you on price. So lets say you avoid custom orders with Lowes and Home Depot to keep your costs down. If you have a 38 inch wide opening you may end up only being able to buy a 36 inch cabinet and then buy filler strips so it looks a little better. If you were using a custom cabinet builder in your local area of Tyler you could have the cabinet made to exact dimensions.

A big apprehension I had going into this custom cabinet process was just what type of quality could I expect from a local Tyler company to make something that looks as good as what you see at Home Depot? Well have you been into Don’s TV’s and Appliances. If you haven’t you need to as you will see a whole new level of cabinetry that Lowes and Home Depot just can’t deliver on. The custom cabinets in Don’s were made by Mitch West’s custom cabinet company called Cupboards Plus. I did not realize this back in the day but eventually I came full circle through recommendations from people I know that the guys that did Don’s cabinets are the same guys people were telling me to use.

I met up with Mitch West and one thing that immediately had my attention was the amount of choices and detail I could pick from. There was no end to the amount of wood cuts for the doors, cabinet sides and crown molding. Because of the amount of choices you have available you can get real creative with your cabinets. So my apprehensions were laid to rest as far as what the wood would look like but I was still unsure if they could deliver on the type of stain or paint technique used on the cabinets. I went back to Don’s TV and Appliances to get a second look at just what could be done and there are just as many if not more examples of what type of paint technique and wood stain that can be applied to your cabinets as you will see at Lowes and Home Depot.

Another issue that comes into play is the amount of filler joints you will need to make your Home Depot cabinets look like one piece. You will usually have 5 or 6 cabinets from Home Depot screwed together with many joints between each cabinet to make it look like one piece. With a custom cabinet you can usually have a whole piece per wall with no filler joints needed. The subtle difference in having cabinets with no joints really gives off a look you just would not foresee unless you had chosen to go the custom way. With a custom cabinet you simply can build what you want to exactly fit your kitchen. There are no filler pieces and the quality of wood product far exceeds what Lowes and Home Depot uses for their cabinets.

We had a unique custom cabinet situation as our kitchen was built in 1912 and was originally a small farm house. The slab is a very bad pour and so there are some slopes in the kitchen. The ceiling is also a plank board ceiling and isn’t exactly straight either. If ever there was a custom cabinet makers nightmare I believe our kitchen would be that nightmare. Through a measuring technique and crown molding they were able to create an effect that makes the ceiling and floors to appear level. Your eyes are not distracted by obvious slopes and valleys in the kitchen floor and roof. Also the upper cabinets were made at different heights so the bottom level is all the same height where the back-splash comes up to so the line for the back-splash remains level. When using a local Tyler custom cabinet maker you can have weird corners done custom unlike a pricey custom order request that would be required when going with Home Depot or Lowes. Now if you had Lowes or Home Depot cabinets delivered what chance do you think you have of these cabinets being installed with this level of experience? Consider that nothing was custom made for your kitchen situation when using these larger national brand companies.

So lets go through a typical persons experience even like what I had when walking through Lowes or Home Depot and observing their cabinet demos. I am always impressed at these stores with the whole turnkey product you see. The cabinet doors always look amazing and the hardware choices are unique when examining the door handles. I usually pay close attention to the immaculate paint styles and stains on the cabinet doors and sides. The cabinets appear so well done that it would seem impossible for a small customer cabinet maker in Tyler to be able to do the same or better. Well let me tell you my assumption that a custom cabinet maker could not do a better job than what you see at Lowes and Home Depot is way off. If you are a typical Tyler home owner unfamiliar with the construction trade you may fall into this same uninformed category as me.

Here are some questions a real custom cabinet maker will likely ask you to ask a Lowes sales person:

  • What wood material are the cabinets built out of?
  • The price per foot says $40 a foot but what is the total package price? (Most people that buy Home Depot and Lowes cabinets do not know what the whole turnkey price will be)
  • Are they plywood ends, partical board, a special grade of contact paper?
  • Did you know partical board is sawdust and glue?

Here are some points to consider on why a custom Tyler Texas cabinet maker is a much better choice than choosing stock cabinets from Lowes or Home Depot.

  • Instead of possibly lower quality materials you get plywood construction with hardwood face frames and doors.
  • You can usually get custom cabinets back in a little shorter time frame than what Lowes and home Depot deliver in.
  • From what I understand Lowes and Home Depot usually call in an order to North Carolina and get the cabinets back in 2 – 3 weeks. With a custom cabinet maker you usually have a quicker turn around time than that.
  • The staining and painting techniques that can be applied to your custom cabinets look the same and better than what you see at Lowes and Home Depot.
  • Sometimes what you get at Home Depot or Lowes may be built out of partical board or medium dencenty fiber board. The coating is similar to firmica that is poured and baked on.
  • You get a much better quality cabinet using better materials when going with a custom cabinet maker.
  • You Keep the money with Local Tyler companies rather than large national brands.
  • Your not saving a tremendous amount but the quality and customability of your cabinets is much better.

Garage Door Companies in Tyler Texas

November 23rd, 2009

Carriage Garage Door Tyler Texas

You can reach Hollywood Door in Tyler Texas at : 1.866.454.3667

When picking a garage door company to update or install a garage door you have a couple of well known garage door installation companies to choose from in Tyler Texas. Overhead Door Systems has always been the brand name that I was aware of but when searching the internet and phone book I also discovered Hollywood Garage Doors. Hollywood Garage Doors has been in business for over 50 years. I was not aware of this company and to hear about how long they have been around in the city of Tyler Texas really shocked me. I was impressed with their prices and selection in garage doors and was happy to know they had their carriage garage doors on sell for the same price as their regular garage door prices.

I also spoke with my brother when deciding on a garage door installer in Tyler. He had used a new company about a year ago and the company went out of business right after installing his garage door. One of the installation jobs they were contracted to do was the electrical. The garage door company my brother used only did half the job and never came back to complete it. The company went out of business and my brother was stuck trying to find another garage door company to complete the job. I asked Hollywood Garage Door Company if this is a common situation and they explained that many people start up a garage door installation company only to go out of business soon after because they just don’t realize at first what all goes into a garage door installation job.

I was very pleased to have used Hollywood to complete my garage door installation on my garage port. What was once only a garage port is now a garage because of the door being added. If you have a car port don’t think that you can’t have a garage door added to it. The garage door really helps with the security of your home and vehicles and ads a little curb appeal. The price for my garage door was just as cheap as some garage door companies I called on that I had no references from. It turned out that my father and law has used Hollywood in the past and had nothing but good things to say about this company. In fact the guy he new from there went to his church. I was very happy to hear about this connection although I had already hired and committed to using this company prior to what my father and law had told me. Hearing this added reference gave me additional confidence that I had hired a good company for the job.

You can reach Hollywood Garage Door Company in Tyler Texas at: 1.866.454.3667

Let Hollywood know you heard about them from the TylerTXDirectory.com website. This is a personal reference and we have not been paid to refer Hollywood Door as a preferred garage door installation company. We simply believe they do a superb job as our new garage door can attest to and the curb appeal we have achieved at our Tyler TX home.

What I did last summer

November 9th, 2009

As a teacher at a Tyler area private school, I have often found it necessary to do work on the side, (which is why I write for tylertxdirectory.com). This is especially true during the summer, when school is out and my pay is less regular. One of the jobs I’ve had is working with Watson Dirt Works. As an educator, much of my career has been spent indoors pouring over textbooks and grading papers. So when summer rolls around again I almost look forward to the outdoor manual labor. I have found myself twenty feet below ground laying sewer pipe, shoveling septic mud in the rain, digging trenches in the July heat, and even on occasion, compacting earth in the cold of December. And you know what? I’ve loved nearly every minute of it. My grandfather believed that hard physical work is good for the soul. He was right. Over the last few years, Evan Watson and I have traveled all over East Texas. Installing septic systems, field lines, and doing all manner of landscaping. But when summer winds down and the days get shorter I have the luxury of returning to teaching. Evan, however just keeps plugging along as he has for over twenty years.

There are a lot of guys in the sewer and septic game in Tyler. And when a system fails or the job is too dirty or difficult, they all recommend Evan Watson. Evan has a reputation for doing things right the first time without cutting corners or looking for an easy way out. He’s an honest broker who won’t over or under sell a product. Evan will give you an honest assessment of your system’s issues and the solutions. He knows the codes and has the skills to solve a wide range of problems involving septic and drainage. To top it all off, he has contacts and connections all over East Texas.

Let’s face it, good and bad economies come and go, but toilets are forever. There’s nothing worse than not being able flush or shower, so if your system needs an overhaul don’t wait and pray it fixes itself. It won’t. Call the guy with twenty plus years experience. For a consultation call (903) 360- 2513 and tell him you read about him at tylertxdirectory.com. For more on Watson Dirt Works, visit the Tyler Blog Section of this site and look for the title “Integrity in a dirty business.”

Tyler Texas Flooring Installation

October 7th, 2009

One of the biggest eye appealing renovations you can make to a house is to replace the floors. Many people never replace the floors because it is a hard job especially when having to scrape up linoleum tile. Wood flooring materials go for very high prices and so the cost of buying the wood flooring material and paying a Tyler TX wood floor installer and contractor to install the material is outside most peoples budget. Having said all of this discouraging news it can still be done however even if you have a tight budget. If your roof is leaking be sure to get your Tyler homes roof replaced by a company like Advantage Roofing before installing brand new wood floors.

Many people go into a store like Lowes, Home Depot, or Homes Plus and get floors priced. We went into all of these stores and what we found were flooring prices way outside our budget for what we were wanting. Tyler Texas Floor InstallerFloors Plus came out to our house and measured our floors and said they would get back to us on a price but we never heard from them again. Actually about 75% of the contractors we had come out to our house for different job like roofing and other things we never heard from again. I try and be polite and direct as to what I want and I am unsure why so many building contractors have such a weird policy of never calling back.

Well I was a bit frustrated with the prices I had been quoted and the difficulty in getting contractors to follow through until I found a wood flooring store with reasonable prices. I went to Lancaster Texas which is very near Dallas and received some price estimates on some wide plank flooring which seems to be the new trend in wood flooring these days. They had several different wood styles to choose from and even had that etched look on some of them. I was surprised that many of their higher end stuff was priced around $4.50 or less a foot. This was quite a bit less than the $7.50 a foot I was finding at Lowes, Ace Hardware, Homes Plus, and other flooring stores I had visited.

The next step in the flooring process was to find a cheap installer that would do a quality job. I found Eliseo with Texas Floor Installer. He was able to install my floors for much cheaper than I was able to find anywhere else. He used to work for a large wood floor installation company but since then he has went off on his own and can price your floor installation much cheaper than a larger floor installation company. Many of these floor installer companies have a large overhead and a building on the side of the highway. They have to pay for all of that overhead with higher prices to their customers. Eliseo works from his house and has a family owned business where his adult members of his family assists in helping him install the floor.

By using Eliseo you are basically using the same contract labor the larger wood flooring companies in Tyler use but without the added expense. Many of the large flooring material companies in Tyler contract out the labor to people and companies like Eliseo. Why tag on several thousand more dollars to the cost of your Tyler Texas wood floor installation when you have a good recommendation from Tyler TX Directory about a wood flooring installer we have used ourselves with excellent results?

You can learn more about Texas Floor Installer by visiting their Tyler Texas flooring website page.

Tyler Texas Roofing Companies

August 31st, 2009

When buying a fixer upper home in Tyler Texas you may end up buying a house with an old roof that needs a bit of an upgrade and most usually a complete replacement. Most people hope that after buying a home like this that a hail storm comes along soon after the purchase and voids the roof warranty which in turn allows your insurance company to pay for a new roof. You end up with a new roof after paying the deductible which is usually only $500 or so dollars. In my case I bought a fixer upper Tyler Texas home but a hail storm never came along and my roof began to leak. I quickly realized that I need a new roof. Some of my decision processes in comparing roofing companies and prices had to do with several important points. We believe you should consider these points as well when deciding which Tyler roofing company you will choose for your new roof.

  • Is the Tyler Roof Company Bonded?
  • Are They Insured?
  • Are They a Licensed Roofing Installer?
  • Are They a Member of the Tyler Area Builders Association?
  • Does The Roofing Company Offer Referral Information on Other Roofing Jobs They Have Completed?
  • Do They Offer Pricing On Both 20 and 30 Year Shingles?
  • Does The Roofing Company Use 30 pound Felt?
  • How Many Nails Do They Use Per Shingle?
  • Do They Offer Energy Efficient Shingles For Those Wanting To Lower Their Electricity Bill Costs?
  • What Is Their Roofing Projects Estimated Cost?

These are some of the questions to ask and consider when comparing Tyler Texas roofing companies. You can call around 5 – 10 Tyler roofing companies to get answers to these questions and more. We recommend taking down notes and be sure to get them to come out and give you a total project cost. One of the more important points that many people overlook is if the East Texas roofing company is bonded and insured. You also need to make sure they offer a warranty on their own construction work and not just the material warranty.

A good roofing company will come on site and help you determine what roofing shingle color will look best on your house. They can also consult you on what energy efficient shingles they have and what the estimated energy savings could be over the course of a year. By picking a lighter shaded shingle you will reflect sunlight off of the roof more and save on energy over a darker colored shingle. When comparing shingle prices as well as construction costs we compared prices from about 10 different Tyler roofing companies. We ultimately ended up going with Advantage Roofing Company and have found their prices to be the cheapest while still offering a quality product, 30 pound felt, and craftsmanship on the actual construction job.
