Green Acres Baptist Church

If you have ever drove through Tyler you probably noticed the extremely large church that is quickly taking over South Tyler. Green Acres Baptist Church has become one of the most popular churches in Tyler. Although the giant crowds might be some what intimidating and impersonal, they have a place for you. Green Acres has classes for married, singles, children, newly weds, people with financial difficulties. Whatever is going on you in your life they have counseling and support groups available to you.

Green Acres has programs for everyone and every age. If you have a heart for music they have great opportunities. For children they have a program choir group, “Kidz Praise”, for adults they have a wonderful Worship Ministry for each sermon, they also have a choir group for high school and junior high.

If you are looking for a support group there are so many ways to get involved with the programs at Green Acres. They have many classes for single adults. Through the “Singe Adult Ministry” be able to reconnect with people going through similar situations as yourself. They have classes overcoming divorces, and they also have programs, classes and outings for single parents.

If you have gone through things in your life that really are hard to let go of, you are very welcomed to contacted GraceWorks. They have professional counselors that are willing to help you. Also they have a program known as Celebrate Recovery. At Celebrate Recovery you will be able to talk with people to help you rise above struggles in your life. People are there to talk with you and pray with you.

There are many great mission opportunities available to you. Green Acres sends out mission trips several times a year to all over the world. Green Acres also is involved with other missionary organizations and has ways to make you more involved.

Green Acres also has memberships available to the “Family Life Center” which is a safe place for kids to hang out and a great place to work out. At the family life center there is a great workout room, basketball court, bowling alley, racquetball courts, walking track, and activity room. If you are hosting a party you can reserve the activity room with pool tables, table tennis and even Wii video games. Also you can reserve the bowling alley for only a dollar a game, they also have shoes available for rent. Green Acres also has sport teams and competitions for children and Adults of all ages. They have flag football, basketball, softball, gymnastics, soccer, and much more.

Come by GABC’s bookstore for books, Bibles, movies, and great inspiration Christian movies. They have education movies and toys and music for children.

Come worship with us on Sunday mornings, Each Sunday morning enjoy an inspirational Bible message from Pastor David Dykes at the time convenient for your schedule. Sermons are at 8:15a.m., 9:45a.m.,and 11:15 a.m. If you are new to the church or just visiting feel welcome to visit with the pastor after each service at the Bethany Suit (next to the GABC Bookstore). People are there to talk to you about how to get more involved and are eager to give you answers to any questions you might have and tell you about all different opportunities to volunteer in the church and in the community. Trinity Baptist Church of Tyler

Well, it seems as though I’ve started writing on a class of East Texas institutions I have been hesitant to start writing on. Of course I’m referring to churches, but after writing about my own church and those of my family members I find that, as Wellington said, I’m in for a penny, in for a pound. My purpose is to make Tylerites aware of the local church traditions they have to choose from.

While I’m not a member of the Baptist church, I can certainly respect the faith and sincerity of many of my family and friends who are. Trinity Baptist Church has been a part of the Tyler community for many years and is located at 604 West 4th in Tyler. Doctrinally the church follows the teaching of the Baptist denomination. The church is full of sincere Bible believers who are reaching out to the Tyler community, and the world beyond. Trinity Baptist is involved with numerous local charities and missions organizations so they offer a variety of opportunities for members to plug into. The church has contemporary worship and offers a variety of Christian education classes for congregants of all ages.

The church building itself is beautiful. It offers enough classroom space for any number of events and classes, offered both by the church and the school who now shares the facility during the week. The staff is accommodating and helpful and is concerned about the needs of the congregation.

This past summer Trinity Baptist invited King’s Academy Christian School to share its wonderful facility. The church has been a huge blessing to this new area ministry in a way that has allowed it operate comfortably, and even expand. For anyone looking for a new church home with a preference for the Baptist tradition, I strongly recommend looking at Trinity. The Vineyard Church of Tyler

The choice of what church to attend, and which is right for one’s family, is a very personal one. These days, folks in Tyler Texas who are unable to find a church with which they can agree on absolutely everything, often opt to start their own churches. They open in store fronts, movie theaters, and the homes of parishioners, in the temporary absence or a building or property. Generally I encourage this type of religious and community participation. But in a town of nearly a thousand places to worship, our city does not need additional “start up” churches. Everyone should be able to find an existing church in Tyler where they can practice their faith in a community of relatively likeminded people. This is why I’ve started to write about area Churches, in the hopes that perhaps someone who’s looking around will stumble onto this site and find some useful information.

Having already written on my own church, it is difficult to write on a church with which I have little connection. I can speak to churches attended by my friends and family however. One such church is the Vineyard Church of Tyler. While located in Times Square shopping center, the Vineyard is no start up church, having been around for nearly twenty years now. The Tyler Vineyard is a part of the Vineyard USA Community of Churches, in effect a denomination all its own. The church holds to the standard points of doctrine of the modern Evangelical Church, particularly when it comes to the supremacy of scripture.

The Vineyard places a heavy emphasis on the importance of worship in the liturgy. The music is contemporary and central to the Vineyard experience. The church strives to be both culturally relevant and approachable to the Tyler area young people. The atmosphere is casual and informal. Gourmet coffee is served in the foyer prior to the service and during the peace, (or the greeting). The pastor’s homilies are brief but applicable to the congregant’s experience (again we see the emphasis on cultural relevance). The VCT is also involved in numerous community outreaches and local charities.  They also support members of area missions organizations, who export the gospel around the world.

New Covenant Church

For those who are new to Tyler and are in the process of searching out a new Church that leans toward the charismatic non- denominational side, New Covenant Church of Tyler is an excellent option. Pastor Sam Fisher and his wife Yvette have led the church since its founding nearly ten years ago.

                The church is a Bible based church, which places a strong emphasis on both worship and teaching. Since N.C.C. is a more charismatic church, worship definitely takes center stage. The environment is free and open to individual expressions of praise, but not (as the church’s literature states) fanatical. Each congregant is careful not to distract those around them from their private prayers.

                New Covenant has a very strong missions focus. The congregation is a really strong group of wonderful people who place a premium on both global and community outreach.  N.C.C.’s motto is “preaching the good news of Christ, around the world or across the street,” and this church is doing both. The global side of that creed has taken parishioners to Central America, the Holy Land and Eastern Europe. The church also partners with missions groups like Youth With A Mission by supporting staff members financially, and encouraging church members to attend outreaches and ministry events held by the mission. On the local side, N.C.C. partners with Zoe Prison Ministries, supports KVNE Christian radio and participates in the he annual “Arts With A Mission” camps which take place on campus at the Y.W.A.M. center in Lindale. The church also holds the “Mega Sports Camps” as an outreach to area children.  

                But the church does more than just reach out, it also ministers within. There are Sunday school classes for just about every age ranging from children’s church, to Jr. High and High school students. There is an active youth program consisting of teens and high schoolers, as well as a college and career classes for young adults seeking a place to connect with others at the same stage of life. Lastly there are home groups were families can meet to study the scriptures and share experiences.

                Tyler has just about every conceivable shade and flavor of church, but for those looking for a new one, New Covenant Church has a lot to offer. If you prefer a family oriented church with a lot of activities for the average person, consider this one. With plenty of places to plug in and areas to become involved you’ll never be bored unless you want to be. For those wanting more information N.C.C. has a great website. Christ Episcopal Church

I have been told that there are over seven hundred churches in Tyler. In fact some have accused us of being a sort of religious Baskin Robin’s, offering thirty one flavors. Well there are a few area parishes / congregations who have been active since our fair city was in its infancy. Christ Episcopal Church is one of those. Founded in 1867 the church has undergone a short move and numerous progressive expansions. It is currently completing Grelling – Spence building, which will add much needed space for the various ministries of the church.

 Christ Church describes itself as a “joyful, spirit-filled community” of Christians who desire to reach out the Tyler area and the world, teaching others to develop their own genuine relationships with Jesus Christ.

   Christ Church is a member of the world wide Anglican Communion, which traces its lineage from the Church of England. It is a liturgical church whose theology is based in the Scriptures, the Book of Common Prayer, and the ancient Christian Creeds. The Church practices the Eucharist (or the Lord’s Supper), on a weekly basis, and adheres to the traditional church calendar.

 There are any number of ministry opportunities offered at Christ Church. There are weekly Sunday school classes both for adults as well as kids. There is a children’s choir and choir school, which teaches the participants the traditional songs of the Anglican faith and Christianity in general. The church also participates in numerous community outreach projects such as partnering with Habitat for Humanity and Loaves and fishes, (an outreach to Tyler’s poor and homeless). Each year the church sponsors ministry field trips to places like Galveston, San Francisco, Guatemala and many other places.

 Programs like Education for Ministry provide parishioners with a deeper understanding of the Christian faith, so they can be prepared to share their faith either within the context of the church or in the community at large. While Christ Church is a good sized church, its no “mega church” There is no basketball court bowling ally, or swimming pool. What they do have are wonderful Christian believers reaching out to Tyler and the world with the love of Christ.
